INDUSTRIALIZATION, IMPERIALISM, AND WORLD WAR I:
Discuss an analysis of the interconnected nature of the Industrial Revolution, the New Imperialism, and the outbreak
of World War I by explaining the following elements:
(1) The Industrial Revolution enabled society to overcome four challenges. List these challenges and explain the
significance of each. How did the Industrial Revolution pave the way for the New Imperialism?
(2) What was the “White Man’s Burden” and how was it the driving force for the Imperial powers? How did
technology and industrialization influence the scramble for colonies? (Remember to discuss in detail the
“Progressive Defense” vs. the “Traditional Defense”).
(3) Describe how industrialization, imperialism, alliances, nationalism, and arms races, destroyed the European
Balance of Power and resulted in World War I. What new or improved technologies were used that virtually
guaranteed that this would be a long, protracted war? (Provide several examples!)
