Identify a person who you respect in regard to money. You are going to have a discussion with this person and report on what you learn from having this discussion. The person you talk with can be a parent, friend, or relative. They should be at least 20 years older than you.
The objective of this assignment is to open a conversation about money and learn to listen openly and without judgment. Most people are afraid to talk about money because it is uncomfortable and we must “confess” to our own shortcomings. The objective is not to have the person tell you what to do, so work at keeping the conversation conversational in tone.
How to do this,
Choose one concept from this week’s lesson and use it as an opener (ex. emergency funds, or expenses/savings first budgeting).
Record the concept you will use as the opener and at least 2 other questions you will ask. Record these at the top of your journal.
Have the conversation and record place, time, duration, who, and how (phone, Zoom, in-person)
The majority of your journal will be what you learned, what you want to use for yourself, what you still have questions about, and what you won’t use.
The last paragraph in your journal is an assessment of how easy the conversation was and if you will consult this person again.
Remember everything you write is confidential. This assignment is meant to be led by you, use this as an opportunity to ask questions you wouldn’t normally ask. Journals should be no longer than 3 pages double spaced.
