Discussion Prompt 1: Love or Loathing for Drama/Plays?
Ok, sure, “love” or “loathing” sounds a bit melodramatic. It might be more a case of whether you “like” or “fear” drama, right? In any case, before we get too far involved, I think it’s useful for us to talk about what it is that draws people to drama (study of it, viewing of it, etc.) and what keeps people away from it.
Before we go any further, let’s be clear. “Drama” in the context of this class (“World of Drama”) refers to Plays, as opposed to Short Stories and Novels (studied in “World of Fiction) or Poems (studied in “World of Poetry”). It doesn’t necessarily refer to someone being overly “dramatic” (as in “drama queen”) or a movie being “serious” (as opposed to an Action Adventure of a “RomCom,” for instance). Yes, “drama” does refer to plays like Romeo and Juliet!
Like/Love: What is it that you like/love about plays? What does drama offer you that another genre of literature (novels, poetry) or performance art (dance/opera/ musical) might not?
Fear/Loathing: What turns you off of plays? Was it really high-school literature class and the study of Julius Caesar? Or is it that you have a certain conception of drama as too high-brow (when what you really want to do is sit down with a nice YA dystopian fiction)?
