In this assignment you define a skills development activity for yourself, review what you did and reflect on your goals. You submit the review/reflection as your written assignment.
Any work produced as a by-product or product of your development is an appendix.
An example of a skills development activity might be
attending a Careers Centre workshop (check their Calendar), such as EMPLOY101 or one of its component activities such as :
Submitting and perfecting your resume through VMock
Undertaking a BigInterview practice interview and sharing it for comment with a peer
Developing a LinkedIn profile
Undertaking an extended LinkedIn Learning course on a topic of your choice. This could be on how to monetise Google Adwords or Youtube, or a range of other courses. LinkedIn Learning is currently a free resource for UWA Students.
Working on Google News Initiative online workshops. https://newsinitiative.withgoogle.com/training/
Trying your hand at a ‘How to’ Screencast. (Guidelines are on the ADL page)
Doing a ‘MasterClass’ https://www.masterclass.com/
Forming up a portfolio of your writing or creative work on WordPress, Wix or Google Sites (the ADL will be a source of advice here)
Defining your personal development pathway. Note: Too broad an activity will lead to vagueness.
You can focus on a combination of activities if you wish but your activity should have a specific, overarching ‘skills development’ goal. (For example, mastering interview techniques because of your nervousness.) You should aim for an activity that involves at around 2–3 hours of direct skills development or training. Going over this time is ok, but this will be on your own time. Depending on the kind of assignment 3–5 references from credible academic or industry journals/websites should be considered a minimum.
Your reflection should be use APA style (in text citations are included in the word count). The format is a reflection and a narrative. Tell a story about your skills development activity, hopefully grounded in some contemporary research and debate, and be mindful of the rubric. A formal introduction and conclusion is not needed, rather tell a story about the activity. Consider your reader to be a ‘supervisor’ or ‘mentor’ of some kind.
Example 1:
Skills development activity: A LinkedIn Learning course on how to be a social media manager.
Your review/reflection: Review the activity as an experience, and evaluate it in relation to broader current debates (such as whether the Social Media Manager role is dead, for example).
Example 2:
Skills development activity: do the Careers centre workshop on LinkedIn and create a profile.
Your review/reflection: Review the activity as an experience, and connect it to current debates on the importance or relevance of LinkedIn and networking in general, or debates around personal branding.
In your reflection you are asked to cover the following themes:
Why you chose this particular exercise? What did you hope to get out of it? What were your goals?
How did it connect to the unit theme of ‘Media Enterprise in Transition?’
What does the contemporary literature say about this exercise? Why is it/not considered important.
What was the experience like? Was it exciting, challenging, boring? Document specifics.
What specific skills were the focus on the exercise? Why do you think such skills are important?
Using readings and approaches from the unit, or other related research, how could you analyse this exercise?
Where would you go next? How could you build on these skills?
It can draw on first-person perspective, but be aware that over-use of the first person can detract from the authority of your argument.
Assessment Criteria:
Definition and contextualisation of the skills activity you have defined for yourself and its goals.
Use of readings and approaches from the unit connecting to the theme ‘Media Enterprise in Transition?’
Depth of evaluation of skills and development activity
Rigorous and consistent referencing
Writing and expression
