Analysis of Approaches: Topic Proposal
After critically reviewing the Approaches to Multicultural Curriculum Reform by JA Banks article, I like to compare and contrast the Contribution approach and the Transformation approach. Contribution approach is the foremost of all the other approaches. This is used in the mainstream to describe the roles of the ethnic heroes which are integrated into the school curriculum. It essentially celebrate individuals or ethnic heroes on special days, weeks and months. For example, February is slated for Black History month, last week in the month of May is earmarked to celebrate teachers and January 15 to remember Martin Luther King’s birthday. During this period, teachers engage students in different actives and ethnic contents can easily be included in the curriculum concurrently. Transformative Approach is completely different from Contribution Approach. It enhances student ability to view multicultural group with another insight and also grasping the nature, development and complexity of our society. I view these two approaches as ones that would possibly bring a lot of change into students’ perceptions towards multicultural framework and will on the other hand give them a sense of appreciation for cultural diversity.
