How do you attempt to convince people who disagree with you about that is right?
Intro
When people disagree it’s important to remember that everyone has a reason or better yet, what they believe to be true. A conflict between two people can be a simple misunderstanding or escalate into a full-fledged argument. There are more ways than ever before for people to try to “prove” they’re right between social media, news channels, and options of public protests being more evangelized. Being right and being heard are two separate things. So how do you work towards an understanding of what is right with someone else?

It can take many years of personal growth and learning how to identify keywords, body language, voice tones, and how to react appropriately to a tense interaction. In an article by Fran Lewitter, et al, ”Ten Simple Rules for avoiding and resolving conflicts with your colleagues”, there are ten steps to get to that level of understanding for yourself and others. A few worth mentioning; the first could be the most important. (1) Treat others with respect and equality, (2) Seriously consider and respect the point of view of others, (3) If you disagree with someone, explain why (Lewitter et al, 2019) This is critical to continuing the conversation so everyone’s point can be made. The list can go on, but ultimately, the goal is to have a conversation, logical debate, and not a yelling match.
Rule #7 may be the best advice of the #10 steps – Engage in honest non-confrontational dialogue. The Rationale of the discussion can be lost if one thinks that yelling or arguing is the only way to make another person understand why something is right.
Disagreements or conflicts will happen in our daily lives, this is a fact. How we react to those disagreements sets us aside as Christians. What is right is that God has given us the gift of speech, understanding, kindness, and humility. As Christians, we are the face and voice of God, if we act as God has intended us to be, disagreements can turn into a learning experience. One never knows, it just may be this disagreement that leads others to believe in Christ out of our humbleness. As in Luke 14:11, “For everyone who exalts himself to be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”.
