Write an analytical and evaluative essay about an advertisement OR argument conducted via some form of new media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc.). This is similar to analytical essays you’ve written in the past, but this time, you’ll have more than just text to analyze—depending on the genre or platform, you might also have visuals, music, tone of voice, and conventions of the platform to analyze. Your essay should:
Identify an advertisement or argument made on some new media platform. This can be an individual argumentative piece of media (i.e., a Twitter thread, a lengthy Instagram post, etc.) or a debate between two or more interlocutors. The argument you choose to analyze should ideally be by (or between) fairly high-profile individuals, or at the very least, accessible to the public so that I can verify the content of the argument or advertisement.
Summarize the argument or advertisement.
Identify the strategies and devices by which the author is making his or her argument, paying particular attention to how the genre or platform conventions shape the argument.
Evaluate the rhetorical effectiveness of the advertisement or argument.
In addition to the main source you’ve chosen, you MUST engage with a minimum of TWO outside sources. These outside sources may be used to provide context for the conversation in which your primary text is participating; to provide background information about the new media platform you’re working with; to lend credibility and support to your own position; to demonstrate how widespread the position expressed in the primary text is; and/or to point out a weakness/omission in the primary text.
These sources should be appropriately embedded in your essay using introductory and transitional phrases. Your reader should never be confused about who is speaking—you, the author of your primary source, or the authors of your secondary sources.
Sources should be cited according to MLA guidelines, both in the body of the essay and in your Works Cited page.
