Topic: Analysis of classic arguments
Read ONE of the following classic arguments:
Thomas Jefferson, “The Declaration of Independence”
Jonathan Swift, “A Modest Proposal”
Henry David Thoreau, “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience”
Sojourner Truth, “Ain’t I a Woman?”
Prompt:
Answer the following questions:
1) What is the essay’s central argument or arguments?
2) What is the rhetorical situation?
3) Analyze the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the writing itself- what strategies are used to persuade the audience, and why is this essay considered important or memorable?
Task 1: Initial Post
1) Clearly state classic argument you are addressing.
2) Develop a substantive main thread addressing each question of the prompt above in full.
3) Your initial thread must be at least three paragraphs in length (200+ words) and provide textual evidence.
4) Provide a proper citation at the bottom of your initial post.

Task 2: Responses
1) You are then required to read and respond to a minimum of two (2) of your classmate’s discussion topics.
2) Each of your responses should be a minimum of 50 words.
3) Think of your responses in terms of a contribution to an ongoing dialogue. Elaborate on a single idea and keep your post short but concise as if you were holding a conversation with your classmate(s).
4) Incorporate what you have learned from the weekly reading material and from your own real-world experiences.
Responses in reply to my follow-up questions doesn’t count towards Task 2 requirements; however, it will be reflected towards your content score.
Don’t forget to use proper MLA documentation whenever necessary.
