Appropriation or Appreciation Songs

There is a common theme of taking people’s work as one’s own. Unfortunately, when it comes to music, the damage may be far heavier than simple plagiarism . People from around the world have had their cultural identities stolen without consequence.
One may argue that composers/arrangers are putting their own twist on the songs which should make it okay. Others will argue that it is cultural appropriation to so do. What are your thoughts about this issue?

Listen to all 4 selections of the 2 songs in this discussion box and choose one to write about (Either Hound Dog or Papa Loko).
Some Questions to consider:
1: What are the similarities and what are the differences?
Is it ethical to take songs from other cultures and perform them? Why or why not?
In the context of the song you have chosen, is there room to appreciate the music and perform it ethically?
How do you interpret Appropriation vs. Appreciation in the context of the song that you have chosen?
