This assignment should be approximately two pages in total.
There are two parts to this assignment.
In part one, choose at least one of the two ballad poems to discuss: “Miss Gee” and “As I walked out one
evening.” If you like, you can discuss both poems. Your task is to summarize what the poem is about
(the basic story), then point to ways in which the poem is more strange and complicated than it may appear at first. Finally, analyzing some of the strange or puzzling moments in the poem, explain why Auden wrote
the poem in the form and the style that he did, and how the form and style may complicate the basic story
or message.
In part two, choose one of Auden’s Sonnets: In Time of War to discuss. Your task is to summarize what the
poem is basically about and to point to elements of form and style that reinforce or complicate what
the poem is about.
