Write an informative essay in which you compare and contrast the themes of the three poems.
1. Determine the message about the African American experience expressed in each poem
using the extended metaphor of planting and reaping.
2. Choose significant imagery from each poem that demonstrates how the poet used the
metaphor to convey the theme.
3. Draw a conclusion from the information you present about the relationship between the
themes of the three poems.
Metaphor = planting and reaping
History of the African American people working in fields as slaves and not getting to keep what
they grew.
How does each writer explore the theme differently?
Toomer – Emphasizes the importance of memory.
Cullen – explores the theme optimistically (positively)
Bontemps – expresses anger over the injustice of others benefitting from the hard work of
the slaves.
