Checking for Validity and Applicability of Reference Sources

This assignment will help you understand the difference between acceptable and unacceptable reference sources.

In 700–900 words, provide answers to the following questions by the due date assigned to this Discussion Area:

Conducting a literature review means you are reviewing research that has been published in books, periodicals, and Internet publications retrieved from recognized professional, industry, or government organizations’ websites. Will you consider an article located in a popular magazine such as PC Magazine, a reliable, accurate, and trustworthy source? Why or why not?
It is a general rule that you should not use websites where an author cannot be determined. Under what situation could you make an exception and use this type of website as a source of your literature review? How can you help avoid this case?
Can you use the research paper written by you for a previous class as a reference for your current research? Why or why not?
Where can you locate peer-reviewed articles besides the South University Online Library? List at least two possible sources.

Respond to the questions using the lessons and vocabulary found in the reading. Support your answers with examples and research. Your responses should clarify your understanding of the topic. They should be your own, original and free from plagiarism. Follow APA formatting for citing sources.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by analyzing each response for completeness and accuracy and by suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week. This assignment will help you understand the difference between acceptable and unacceptable reference sources.

Data Analyst Tasks

Cindy is working with Elwood Retirement Community Library. She currently tracks inventory using Microsoft Excel. Will she be better off if she created a database for inventory management? What are the pros and cons of the latter solution?
However, Elwood Retirement Community Library decides to hire a Database Analyst. As a recently hired Database Analyst, one of your first tasks is to create a database of borrower information. You need to use phpMyAdmin to create a database named ElwoodDB. The database should have a table named Borrowers with the following columns:

Borrower ID
First name
Last name
Telephone number
E-mail address

You are concerned that the result might include redundant information. Is this always a problem? Under what circumstances is it acceptable? Justify your answer with appropriate examples.
While creating a database, be sure to use appropriate column names and column types. In addition, ensure that no two records can have the same value for Borrower ID and enable the means to quickly search for records by e-mail address.
Take a screenshot of the table properties as shown in phpMyAdmin and submit your rationale for:

Specifying a particular data type for each column.
Specifying the size of data that can be entered in each column.
Selecting a column as a primary key.
Creating an index on a particular column.

Also, review the submissions of at least two other students in the class. Consider the following points in your review:

Are the data types assigned to the columns appropriate?
Is the size of data specified for the columns appropriate?
Are the appropriate columns defined as the primary key?
Is the index created on an appropriate column?

Create a table named Borrowers with the following columns:
Borrower ID
First name
Last name
Telephone number
E-mail address

Be sure to use appropriate column names and column types. In addition, ensure that no two records can have the same value for Borrower ID and enable the means to quickly search for records by e-mail address.

Specifying a particular data type for each column.
Specifying the size of data that can be entered in each column.
Selecting a column as a primary key.
Creating an index on a particular column.

Please indicate at least one issue that you came across during the database creation process and explain how you overcome the problem.

Address the review comments in your work and resubmit the screenshot of the table properties to the Submissions Area by the end of the week. Provide a rationale for any feedback that you do not incorporate.

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.

Write a page and a half mini-essay/test essay/written quiz. Do not write more than 2 full pages. Below are the directives and length requirements for EACH PART of your essay. See the attached Written Quiz Examples in the FILES tab for extensive discussion of requirements in the margins.

See Batch 1, 2, and 3 in Lesson 7! You should have been reading since Week 2!

Here is your Written Quiz info:

Focus/Proof: YOUR CHOICE! But the reading MUST be from Batch 1 of your Reading List.

Extension: Your choice, but the reading must be from Batch 1 of your Reading List.

Thanks! High expectations for this assignment! Pay attention to #4 in the Academic Formula and in the Example/Directions. Have a strong #4 after EVERY citation in the Proof and Extension. Be sure you have at least 2 citations in the Proof and Extension. These are the areas that most students get big deductions from…

DIRECTIONS

Write a page and a half mini-essay/test essay/written quiz. Do not write more than 2 full pages. Below are the directives and length requirements for EACH PART of your essay. See the attached Written Quiz Examples in the FILES tab for extensive discussion of requirements in the margins.

There are so many direction comments that some of them don’t show all the content of the comment. So, be sure to click the arrow in the bottom of the comment box to read all directions. Also, if you use the document as a template for your own assignment — which isn’t a bad idea — be sure to delete all the comments before submitting. (…See how I used a dash in the last sentence? Check Written Quiz Examples and G&P Review Docs in the FILES tab for more discussion on dashes…).

By the way, become conscious of the time it takes you to write an “academic” page. This will help you in writing projects you have that have a deadline. This assignment probably takes anyone 1.5 to 2 hours — NOT INCLUDING THE ACTUAL READING OF THE TEXTS! Those that struggle with writing might take up to 4 hours. Know who you are.

The Example was written by Ponyboy Goldman, he told me he took one hour for the first session where he wrote the Setup/Focus/and Proof. Then, he took another hour to write the Extension, thesaura-size, and clean up his writing. He took 10 minutes to get a G&P Review before submitting. He took another 5 minutes to make the edits that the G&P Reviewer suggested. Know that MS Word and other programs offer a feature that automatically records dates and times a doc was worked on. So, you might use that! Do you like music when you write? Do you like quiet? Mornings? Nights? Know what it takes for you to create an academic page, and then you can schedule accordingly. You will meet deadlines.

REQUIREMENTS

SETUP: (25 pts) Define the critical theory that you will use. DO NOT USE BIOGRAPHICAL THEORY; it either requires an outside source to verify biography and/or it’s too easy and obvious. Feel free to paraphrase from the Lit Crit Attack Doc in FILES. Do not cite from the document though. Use a thesaurus and paraphrase. Lit Theories, at this point, are common knowledge. See Example. (Length Required: 2-3 sentences)

FOCUS: (15 pts) Give a sentence that clearly connects the theory to your assigned reading. See Example. (Length Required: 1 sentence)

PROOF: (80 pts – 20 pts for each part of the Academic Formula; see Examples) Using at least 2 textual citations from your reading, prove that your theory is insightful as to analyzing the story, play, or poem. Use the Academic Formula ENTIRELY and EXACTLY. Thesaura-size. See Example. (Length Required: Half page)

EXTENSION: (80 pts – 20 pts for each part of the Academic Formula; see Examples) Finally, introduce another reading. Make a connection between the text discussed in your Setup/Focus/Proof with a new text. This text will be also be given in the Colloquium. The connection is all up to you. DO NOT MENTION Lit Theory. It’s the Extension! So, be sure it’s NEW and INTERESTING. You can make a connection to theme, setting, character, plot, etc. Browse the units of your textbook for ideas. Use at least 2 citations from the new text. Thesaura-size. Use the Academic Formula ENTIRELY and EXACTLY. See Example. (Length Reguired: Half page)

(200 pts TOTAL) See attached EXAMPLE for more directives in the margins!
