Reflection Analysis

Reflection Analyses (Each reflection analysis is a maximum of 5 paragraphs): These assignments require you to read and then respond to a peer-reviewed journal article. Your instructor will provide you with the choices of
articles that you may use for these assignments. You are to read 1 of the articles. The body of the reflection
analysis should contain 2 main points. First, you will explain what you learned from reading the article. Based
on the article that you read, you will then advance an argument as to how that research can be expanded. In
addition to the 2 main points, you will need to include an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph. You will need to include in-text citations/references and a reference section. Note that each reflection analysis is a formal, written assignment. Each analysis is evaluated for grammar and writing style. Additional
instructions will be provided.
Requirements of the assignment
Choose 1 of the 3 posted articles to read. For the first reflection analysis. You have the choice of any of the
posted articles. Those articles are posted on Canvas under this assignment.
Read the article. Make notes about anything that “catches your eye.” In other words, what do you find
interesting about the information contained in the article? Read the entire article, but your focus should be on
the “results” section, the “discussion” section, and the “conclusion” section. Do not cite from the abstract. Do not cite “what you learned” from the literature review.
Given your personal notes, choose 1 idea that for you, is the most “thought-provoking.”
The body of the reflection analysis consists of 2 main points.
An explanation of what you learned from reading the article.
Hint: You should use direct quotations from the article as a basis
for your argument. Those quotations should come from the discussion, results, and/or conclusion sections.
Link those direct quotations to your argument. You must use APA format for citations.
Avoid using quotations from the abstract!
Understanding that this is not a research or methods-based course, consider what argument might you make as to how research related to the specific journal article that you have read could be expanded (In class, we
will discuss some arguments that you should avoid.). If you use any of the author’s/authors’’ suggestions for expanding the research, then you must give credit to the author/authors.
Your reflection analysis must contain an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph.
You must include a reference (i.e., the journal article).
Refer to Writing Tips. Grammar and syntax are a part of the overall grade for this assignment.

Checklist:
___ From the choices provided by the instructor, I have chosen an article.
___ I have read the article. As I read the article, I took notes on what information I found to be of interest.
___ I have developed 1 main point focused on what I have learned from the article (Avoid a “laundry list” of
ideas. Choose 1 idea and stay focused on that idea.)
___ I have developed an argument for how I believe the research could be expanded.
___ I have written an introductory paragraph that outlines the main points for analysis.
___ I have written a concluding paragraph that provides a summary of the reflection analysis.
___ I have written more than 1 draft of the reflection analysis.
___ I have consulted Writing Tips for general information focused on grammar. I understand that grammar and
syntax are important elements of writing. I understand that grammar and syntax are a part of the instructor’s
evaluation of this writing assignment.
___ I have checked to ensure that my in-text references/citations conform to APA style.
___ I have included a reference section (APA format is required).

Comparative Analysis (Theme or Character)

Comparative Analysis (Theme or Character).docx

Assignment:
In this essay, you will analyze a thematic or character connection between two
texts.
Option 1: Choose to pair two literary texts read for class.
Option 2: Choose to pair a class text with an outside song, film, tv show, story, or
book.
You will argue how a specific theme or issue is portrayed in the two texts and
think about why it is significant to look at the texts together. This means you should find
two texts who share a particular theme OR who have characters with similarities you can
compare/distinctions you can contrast.
Do not use outside research. I just want to see you engaging with the text—I’m interested
in your ideas. Referencing a powerpoint from class is fine, though.
If you go with a focus on theme, you may choose one of the following topics and think
about how each text addresses this theme. Make some notes on what you remember and
think about this theme. Go back to the texts and look for relevant parts/quotes. Then,
consider how you interpret these moments, what you feel the text “says,” and how the
author’s approaches are distinctive. Your focus should be on analysis (looking at parts,
breaking a text or theme into smaller aspects, looking at how things work together) and
interpretation (making conclusions on how and why things are the way they are, assigning
meaning, supporting claims).
Before drafting, the process should start with the specific (moments in the texts,
images, ideas about character, quotations) and move toward an overall point of view (the
larger connection and interpretation). Then, in your actual essay, you can start with the
overall point (argument) and support it with the specific (evidence). Focus on what relates
to your main point, the “thesis”—this is your unique connection between the texts. Your
thesis should make a specific point about the theme or characters in the two texts. (Don’t
just say “Text A and Text B both talk about X.”) Your body paragraphs should employ
comparative topic sentences with textual evidence as support. Discuss the texts together,
rather than discussing one text and then the other (making them seem more like separate
essays).

This was a discuss post I posted this could maybe help with writing my essay.

In Maya Angelou’s documentation, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” the most powerful passages is when she says, “If growing up is terrible for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the blade that threatens the throat”(Angelou, 1997). This passage is one of the most moving parts of the book. It’s an insult that wasn’t necessary at all.” The statement beautifully encapsulates the unique struggles faced by African-American women living in the American South in the middle of the twentieth century. Angelou’s use of the razor image to illustrate her point illustrates that losing one’s cultural identity is more than just distressing; it may even be hazardous(Angelou, 1997). Your sense of self and safety will deteriorate exactly like the rust on the razor if you don’t feel like you belong in the community in which you live.

The fact that Maya Angelou was able to brush off the insult as “unnecessary” exemplifies her strength and perseverance. Angelou, a person subjected to systemic racism and injustice, is adamant that she would not allow her sense of self to be diminished due to her uprooting and isolation(Angelou, 1997). Instead, she recognizes the potential harm it poses and makes the decision to wage war against it by regaining her identity.

Despite this, the passage is noteworthy because it mirrors the larger experiences of displacement and estrangement that many oppressed people go through. By her description of her own experiences as a Black girl growing up in the South, Maya Angelou offers a compelling testimony to the significance of cultural identity as well as the risks of its dissolution(Angelou, 1997). Her testimony is provided in the form of a personal narrative. The reading public is exhorted by Angelou’s writings to place a high value on their cultural identities and protect them from any attacks.

Part 2 of another discuss post

Angelou & Morrison

Is Angelou a reliable narrator in this chapter of her book?

Angelou would be considered a moderately reliable narrator. She writes with a great deal of emotion, and she does not hesitate to include negative details about herself. She is also very honest about her negative feelings toward her family members and others. As a narrator, Angelou is truthful and accurate to herself. She is a very honest account of herself in the novel and is consistently authentic when she writes from her own perspective. It is important to note that this book was not written as an autobiography but as a fictionalized version of her life story. She uses dialogue and some details based on the truth, but she changes many things to make the story more believable or to fit the literary format of a novel better. You could also argue that Maya Angelou’s story is told in such a way as to make herself appear naïve, which helps to make the reader empathize with her.

Are there any details that she may have added or realized after?

Angelou is consistent throughout her memoir as far as remembering details correctly. She does allow her readers to know things from the perspective of a young girl, which may be why she can recall certain things like a visit to the dentist so well. Her account of things could also be more reliable because she talks about how she has forgotten some things over time. However, it is important to note that this book was not written as an autobiography but as a fictionalized version of her life story. The details she has provided about herself are extremely honest, which is an important part of her personality. She wants the reader to understand her life and to understand where her life has led her, which is a personal goal for anyone to enjoy.

Can a young girl remember a visit to the dentist in such vivid detail?

Yes, a young girl can remember a visit to the dentist if it is truly memorable. This is true of many things in life, I am sure. Children only sometimes take great care in selecting what they will remember about their lives, but this does not mean that the details are unimportant. It would be impossible for a young girl to remember everything she has done since day one. For example, we know that she was very close with her grandmother when she was younger, but we also know that she was born when her mother had already grown up and left home. This means that Maya Angelou’s account may have been influenced by things happening before and after the period she is writing about.

The Wounded Platoon

Each of us experiences many different losses in life. As we’re reading in this chapter and supplemental readings, death-related experiences include losses, separation, and endings. For this week’s discussion, think about losses you have experienced (does not have to be death-related), and identify what helped you to cope with that loss and adapt to the changes produced by that loss. What was helpful? What was harmful?
