Book report on American Youth by Phil Lamarche

In 1,250 words or more, discuss a book of your choosing with the caveat that it must be something you can reasonably expect the average person to never have read. Popular books are not allowed for this assignment. Go to the library. Discover something lost or under-recognized. I want you to have a new conversation about a text no one else is talking about. Avoid heavy summary. Focus instead on the function of the narrative. What does it do? Why? For whom? How? How does it reflect the time and place that produced it? Does it resonate with its intended audience? Why or why not? What issues or themes is this text exploring? How do you know? Does the author rely on allegory or metaphor? What sort of stylistic choices are made? Why? What can the lived experience of the author tell you about the text? Would you recommend it? Why or why not? Be as specific as possible. The first person is generally discouraged, except in your final judgment where you make a recommendation to me about whether or not the book warrants reading. Yes or no is not enough. Discuss, specifically, why or why not. You may use the first person in that final section only.

Please view the student sample essay. It is imperfect in that it was not written for this particular iteration of the assignment, but it should give you an idea of what is expected of you. In general, in 1,250+ words, I want you to intelligently discuss a book neither of us has ever heard of. If you follow that basic guideline, and if you avoid heavy summary, you should expect to do well. As always, aim for sound grammar and style

the book is American Youth me and the professor have chosen it. BOOK REPORT is the task.

self and others

Rather than living in chaos, danger, and the hostility of our neighbors, we find ways to live together. It isn’t easy, but can we avoid doing so?

If everybody has self-interest in their own welfare and safety, then everybody also has self-interest in the welfare and safety of others. Self-interest involves community interest, and we must think about what we are willing to give up in order to get that safety and stability for ourselves, our families, our community, our nation, and even the world.

Thomas Hobbes and John Locke are just two examples of social contract moralists. Locke’s philosophy helped Thomas Jefferson formulate the United States Declaration of Independence. We are interested in what it means to live together in an orderly way under a social contract.

For the initial post, address one of the following sets of questions:

What is a time when you or someone you know of experienced a conflict between duty to self and loyalty to the community? What would logical reasoning say should be done in that case? Why that? What would an Ethical Egoist say to do? Why would they say to do that? Note what you feel is the best course of action.
What is a time when you or someone you know experienced a clash between professional duties and familial duties? Reference a professional code such as that of the American Nurses Association or American Bar Association in explaining the clash. What moral values should have been used in that case? Why those values? What would social contract ethics have said to have done? Why would social contract ethics say that? Note what you feel is the best course of action.
Articulate and evaluate a time when you or someone you know saw personal obligations collide with national obligations. How did that tension involve differing positions on a moral debate? Did those positions rely on any key moral theories? If so, how so? If not, why not? Note what you feel is the best course of action.

ONTEMPORARY FAMILY ISSUES IN THE MEDIA

Write a 4- to 5-page analysis:
Introduce your topic and relevant background information or context.
Summarize what the media says about this topic in your area. How does the media describe or define the problem? Who is involved in the coverage, or who is identified as stakeholders?
Evaluate if the media coverage is mostly positive, negative, or a mixture. Use specific examples to support this evaluation. Explain the impact of this positive or negative coverage.
Summarize the academic and peer-reviewed research on your topic.
Explain how the academic and peer-reviewed research confirms or refutes the media coverage.
Include a self-reflection of your process in finding these sources and how the findings in the media and scholarly sources can be useful to you as a human services professional practitioner and leader.
Conclude by assessing the reliability of media coverage on contemporary family issues. What did you learn as a result of this search? What have you learned about reliability of sources? What is your final takeaway from completing this assignment?
Refer to, and properly cite, Learning Resources and sources from your own literature review.
