Media Literacy Paper

PROFESSORS INSTRUCTIONS (I chose the movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood for this paper)

JMC 1013 – Introduction to Media
Media literacy assignment

The paper is worth 100 points.

The paper: a 7-10 page analysis of some media text…a television program, a web channel, a music video, a web site, a film, etc., or a print advertisement, a graphic novel. The paper can be about any form of media, but must be some form of storytelling: such as, a print or TV story, a public relations campaign, an advertisement, a novel, a documentary, a nonfiction piece of writing, etc. It should not be an individual message (like a social media message) unless it is intended for a general (mass) audience.

THE 7-10 PAGE COUNT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE TITLE PAGE, ABSTRACT OR THE REFERENCE PAGE.

Definition of media literacy: from “Media and Culture: Mass Communication in a Digital Age”:
Developing media literacy – that is, attaining an understanding of mass media and how they construct meaning – requires following a critical process that takes us through the steps of description, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and engagement.

Format (download rubric of what I require, above):

APA research style. Times Roman, 12 pt, 1-inch margins DOUBLE-SPACED. Minimum of 5 references (mix of scholarly and non-scholarly).
This paper should not be first person, and while it can contain your point of view it should not be all opinion — this is what you use research for. You should quote the articles you find that support your theory and give proper credit.

HOW TO STRUCTURE THIS PAPER:

This paper should be in the form of an academic paper with an introduction, theme, body and a conclusion. It should NOT be a numbered list of questions and answers. Follow the five-step critical process and begin the paper by describing the media you have chosen then move into analysis and interpretation and evaluation, then engagement (which could be a scholarly article or YouTube and Facebook comments, Tweets and other social media commentary).

BODY OF PAPER:

USE THE FIVE STEPS AS SECTION HEADERS TO YOUR PAPER.

DESCRIPTION (what is the media about?)

ANALYSIS (what are the patterns and themes in the media?)

INTERPRETATION (why are those patterns and themes important?)

EVALUATION (what you think about the media — use third person)

ENGAGEMENT (how others have reacted or commented)

Also consider answering the six questions below throughout your paper and you will find that the paper will come together quite nicely.

(Don’t forget to download rubric of what I require, above):

Scheduled elements: APA research style with in-paper citations to match those on your references page, and a minimum of five sources in your paper. These can be articles from newspapers, magazine, journals, chapters, websites, any media really. The OWL resource guide (google OWL for Online Writing Lab) will show you how to cite all of those. Three of the references must be from scholarly sources.

You also need to clearly demonstrate that the assignment reflects the steps of the media literacy model we have been using all semester: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, Evaluation, and Engagement.

…but be selective about what you discuss. Find the areas that are relevant to your argument.

As you look at the media example you have chosen, consider these…

Five Key Concepts of Media Literacy

All media messages are “constructed.”
Each medium has different characteristics, strengths, and a unique “language” of construction.
Different people interpret the same media message in different ways.
Media messages are produced for particular purposes, including profit, persuasion, education, and artistic expression.
Media have embedded values and points of view.
…and your paper should answer these questions: consider these…

Six Questions to Ask about Any Media Message

Who made – and who sponsored – this message, and for what purpose?
Who is the target audience, and how is the message specifically tailored to them?
What are the different techniques used to inform, persuade, entertain, and attract attention?
What messages are communicated (and/or implied) about certain people, places, events, behaviors, lifestyles, etc.?
How current, accurate, and credible is the information in this message?
What is left out of this message that might be important to know? JMC 1013 – Introduction to Media

This paper is pretty much a draft, so it only has to be 6 pages. I will turn it in as a
draft. It has to be over the five concepts of media literacy (listed above). I will
send the rubric and other information as a file.

Case Study Project

This an Abnormal Psychology class and rather than doing a research project, the Professor is having us do a Case Study based on a fictional movie character of our choice. There has already been an
assignment assigned and done for this case study project in where we had to chose what fictional
character we will be using and start giving a diagnosis for the character. I will attach this assignment to use in doing this part of project which is the annotated bibliogrpaghy. The following will be the instructions specific to the annotated bibliograpghy:

Continuing to think about the Case Study Project, it is time to decide on which academic resources you will be using to support both the diagnosis and the treatment strategies you will propose. You have
already chosen a movie, television, or book character to study. To complete the project, you will be
simulating a clinical intake where this character has presented to you for treatment. Not only will you
diagnose the character, but you will also propose treatment strategies for this character. The diagnosis and treatment strategies must be based on scholarly academic sources, including academic journals.

Outcomes
Identify and differentiate the classification of psychological disorders
Evaluate treatment approaches

1. Submit an Annotated Bibliography in APA Format (APA reference and four to five sentences
describing the information in each source) of a minimum of four scholarly academic journal articles youplan to use in your Case Study Project.
2. In your search for journal articles specific to treatment focus on specific psychosocial approaches
only and not the use of medications. The textbook or websites may not be used as a resource for the
project.
3. You will need a minimum of two academic journal articles per treatment approach you present for
your client. Therefore, a minimum of 4 journal articles total to support your treatment section.

The Professor has also given us a example annotated bibliography to use so I will attach that. There is
an annotated bibliography rubic (which shows exactly what the Professor is looking for in the
assignment so please open and use it), I’ll attach. Finally, there is a mock intake form that we will be filling out for the end part of this case study so the refefrences picked for thi s assignment have to be relevent to being able to answer the questions on the mock intake form, so please look at it as well. I’ll
attach any other questions please ask.

I also wanted to add the Professor comments of the first assignment of picking fictional movie character and describing the movie along with
preliminary diagnosis. Please use the Professors recommendations for this annotated bibliography:

Joon could be a good case study, but she does not show clear criteria for schizophrenia, just some possibilities it may be there. It may be difficult to fully follow this through. Only focus on one character, not multiple.

Do not use IMDb or use their film summary as it is not educational and uses material from the film plot summary, so use the film. The film reference would be:

Chechik, J. S. (Director). (1993). Benny & Joon [Film]. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

Max Weber Pillars

Essay 3: Value 10 points (500-600 words, typed, font 12 Times New Roman).
According to Weber, the rationalization process is the practical application of knowledge to achieve a desired end. Describe and explain the pillars (key elements) of rationalization. At the same time, he argued that there is irrationality of the rationalization process.
Also describe and explain the pillars of irrationalization process. In answering these two questions, provide clear examples from ONLY ONE of the Following governmental institutions (e.g.,
Health Canada, Employment and Social Development, Immigration Refugee and Citizenship, or Correction Service of Canada), and explain how each example relates to each of the above pillars of rationality and irrationality at one of these institutions.
There will be penalties of up to 50% for failing to show that you used, understood and cited the relevant discussions in lectures and the textbook.

Geography annotated bibliography

Project Overview:
This is part of a 3-PART SERIES OF ASSIGNMENTS on the SAME topic. Assignment #1 – the Bibliography (submitted Week 3). Assignment #2 – the Outline – is due Week 5. Assignment #3 – the Final Presentation – is due Week 7. You’re building this project throughout all three Assignments, using the same or similar topic.
For this project, you’ll choose a topic and then research how four geographic concepts are related to and affect your topic. Instead of presenting your research as a traditional paper, you’ll use PowerPoint to create a narrated presentation. Your presentation will be structured like a paper, including a title, introduction to the topic, main body, summary and conclusions, and references. Creative use of properly cited graphics and photos from the Internet relevant to your topic is required.
First, choose a topic! Topics must be a food item, cuisine, invention, or idea with a SUPER CLEAR REGION OF ORIGIN. Do some investigation of the 4 required elements (see below) before you settle on one topic. If you’re not sure if your desired topic is appropriate, please feel free to ask!
Your topic must be analyzed through these 4 required elements to determine how each of these geographic concepts affects or is related to your topic: 1. Regions 2. Cultural Landscape 3. Diffusion 4. Distance decay. The first two concepts are covered in the first chapter of your textbook. Diffusion is covered in Chapter 8, Section 2 (page 484). Distance decay refers to the fact that influence and interaction between locations decreases as the distance between them increases. As such, it has a significant influence on how things change as they diffuse away from their point of origin. Be sure to address these specific geographic terms and concepts in your work. You don’t need to address them in this order, but you do need to address all of them. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g., contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and other reliable resources to ensure you completely understand these concepts. You should be detailed in your treatment of these concepts – for instance, you should explain both how and why your choice varies by region, and how and why it has been affected by distance decay. Remember that geography, as an academic discipline, seeks to explain why things vary from place to place, not just describe how they do.
FOR ASSIGNMENT #1, you will complete your annotated bibliography. Completing the project in separate assignments allows you to work your way up to the final presentation and provides opportunity for feedback along the way.
Assignment Objective: Assess sources for your research for your final presentation (for credibility, reliability, and relevance) and list references in proper APA format through the creation of an annotated bibliography.
Assignment Instructions: An annotation is a summary and evaluation, and your annotated bibliography will include a summary and evaluation of some of the sources (or references) you will use for your presentation.
To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following:
Read these directions carefully.
Review the sample annotated bibliography provided to you below.
Read the grading criteria below. The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected of you as you prepare your assignment.
Email me with any questions!
The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research project is that writing an annotated bibliography provides excellent preparation for the final presentation. One of the issues regarding any type of research is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By evaluating your potential sources carefully, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if the sources you chose are credible and relevant to your topic. It will also help you understand the topic better, which will help you develop your presentation.
For this project, you will assess three sources to include:
a complete citation for each source,
a summary of each source, and
an evaluation of each source.
Three sources are required for this assignment (i.e., you are to write an annotation for each source). However, you must use five or more sources in Assignment #2 and 3.
Use the TEMPLATE below to summarize and evaluate each of your three sources.
Citation:
Written in APA reference list format. For more help with formatting, see APA handout.
Summary:
What is the purpose of the source, review article, original research? What topics are covered? This section is generally 3-5 sentences that summarize the author’s main point. For more help, see this link on paraphrasing sources.
Evaluation:
After summarizing the article (or research paper or book), it is necessary to evaluate it and state where you found it – its source (e.g., journal, website, etc.). Briefly answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences:
What is the format or type of source (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, website, book)? How reliable is the information in the article, and how credible is the source (e.g., website’s sponsoring organization, journal or book publisher) and the author(s)?
For more help, see this handout on evaluating resources.

You must submit your Annotated Bibliography as a “Microsoft Word” document using the template provided (rather than a Word Pad, Works, etc. document) AND title your file name as FirstInitialLastname_Assign1.doc.

Forensic Psychology-Criminal Profiling

Question?
What is criminal profiling? Criminal profiling is an attempt to use what is known about how a crime was committed to infer what type of person might have committed it. Evidence about profiling suggests that it may help narrow police investigations to the most likely suspects. How productive is criminal profiling in the criminal justice system?

Students must follow the APA writing style, particularly:

Who Gets to ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’? Gendering the Work–Life Balance Rhetoric in Canadian Tech Companies

Please focus in your answer on the female gendered aspect, as that is the topic of our course. Remember, you need to list all your identifying details, come up with an original title for your assignments, list the most important research question or goal, state the most important outcome and why you believe this is the most important outcome. Filling in your case studies will assist your reading focus to fixate on the identifying the important aspects of an academic study.

Submition requirement
The student has identified the most important research question in the case study, and copies it correctly. If the case study includes no research question, just a research goal (be sure of that!) it is identified correctly. Students are encouraged to evaluate whether it is an ‘open’ (i.e., needs a long answer) or a ‘closed’ (i.e., answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’) question.
Maximum score30
Identifies Outcomes (40%):
Student has correctly identified the most important result(s) of the case study and paraphrases the result(s) correctly.
Maximum score40
