IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS

Return, for a moment, to the idea of noticing. Sensory and observational skills paired with an analytical mind are the basis of social work assessment. And assessment is perhaps the most fundamental of all social work activities. It is a process of gathering pertinent information to answer questions about problems, contributions to problems, and potential strengths and assets. At a program-evaluation or program-planning level, a social worker applies the same thoughtful process used in individual assessment but extends or filters it to answer program-level questions.
As a result of this assessment, social workers often identify client problems that suggest the need for new or more focused services. They might next imagine what an appropriate service or program would look like. In this Discussion, you navigate a similar process of noticing problems, identifying needs, and envisioning a program to support those problems and needs.

Review the Learning Resources on focusing an evaluation and on needs assessments.
Consider your field agency, practice, or community setting, and any common client problems, issues, or service gaps you have observed. If you are not currently in a practice setting, you may draw on your past work or practicum experience.
Research and/or brainstorm ideas for programs or services that could address the problems, issues, or gaps.

In Post,
Describe at least one common client problem, issue, or gap in services or programs at your field agency, practice, or community setting. (If you are not currently in a practice setting, you may draw on your past work or practicum experience.)
Specifically, highlight what you see that tells you clients need something more than what the agency, practice, or community setting is offering.
Identify a program that you think is necessary to address the problem, issue, or gap and explain why.
Generate a question that you might ask about your identified need and to whom.

Budget for Small Nonprofit Organization

The Unit 5 assignment requires you to prepare a budget for a hypothetical organization. The assignment simulates what financial leaders do in the real world:
• Present clear, professional budgets
• Justify why their numbers are appropriate for meeting the organizations’ stated mission

Keep in mind that this is NOT a computational exercise (where you merely fill in a spreadsheet). It is a leadership exercise (where you must convince others that your budget is appropriate).
• Develop an annual budget for the organization; place it in an appendix at the end of the paper. Make sure the font size in the budget is readable. Consider providing a side-by-side comparison for the current year as well as next year. See the abbreviated sample below.
Budget Item Current Year Next Year Change (+/-)
(Excel Table)
Item 1 $1,000 $1,200 $200
Item 2 $800 $400 ($400)
Item 3 $5,000 $5,600 $600
Total $6,800 $7,200 $400
• Write a paper that presents a budget for a hypothetical organization (see below scenario).
• State and defend any assumptions you made when preparing the budget (i.e., the budget assumes the current lease is $1,500/month).
• Do not guess or make up fictional numbers. Locate research about comparable numbers to support your analysis.
• Present and discuss each line item of the budget.
• Defend why the budget distribution is appropriate to meet the organization’s stated mission and revenue goals. For instance, if your budget indicates 3% growth in revenues, then discuss what activities in the budget (e.g., hiring more sales staff, purchasing more advertising, etc.) support your forecast that revenue will increase by 3%. Include citations to support your revenue forecast.
• Keep in mind that there is not a “right” or “wrong” approach. Just clearly identify your numbers – then justify (with citations from relevant and current references) why your budget recommendations are appropriate.

• Scenario: Small Nonprofit Organization – You are the executive director of a small nonprofit organization that has been in business for 3 years. The mission of the nonprofit is to provide support services for homeless individuals in Edmond, Oklahoma.
o Last Year’s Budget: $500,000
o Goal: 5% growth ($25,000)
o Next Year’s Budget: $525,000
o Paid Personnel:
 1 executive director (you)
 2 case workers
o Other Information:
 1-year lease for office/community meeting space

Questions: HotSprings Spas manufactures and sells two spa models: the Steamboat and the Classic. HotSprings Spas receives spa bodies from another manufacturer and then adds a pump and tubing to circulate the water. The Steamboat model demands 15.5 hours of labor and 14.5 feet of tubing. The Classic model requires 10.5 hours of labor and uses 20 feet of tub¬ing. Based on selling patterns, the owner, Deborah Gibson, has determined that the Steamboat model generates a profit of $400 per unit, and the Classic model generates $345 profit While Deborah would like a large labor capacity and sufficient tubing and motors to build any number of spas, her resources are limited. For the next production period, Debo¬rah has 2,650 labor hours, 3,450 feet of tubing, and 231 pumps available. Deborah needs assistance in figuring out how many Steamboat and Classic models to build in order to max¬imize her profit. Given the constraints above, assist Deborah in her what-if analysis.

Communication is essential in order to provide the best services to patients. This is threatened when a language barrier exists among healthcare professionals and the patient. A trained interpreter is the best option to address this barrier. When a trained interpreter is not available, other options are available such as a trained interpreter via video conference or phone, an employee of the school, a family member or friend.
According to the videos, what are some roles of an interpreter? Explain
What are some of the challenges interpreters face as they perform their duties? Explain
As a healthcare professional what would be your main concerns about using interpreters? ExplainCommunication is essential in order to providters? Explain

Part of healthcare is prevention. Many illnesses could be avoided if we ate healthy, exercised and rested enough. You watched several videos that highlighted the current conditions of Latino children and youth in the United States.

Use what you have learned about Latino culture to explain how you would handle each of the following situations? Explain your answers.
You are a doctor that is ready to see a Latina female patient for the first time. She looks anguished and scared. She has a bruise on her left temple. Her husband insists on coming in with her. You are not certain that she wants her husband to come in with her.

You are a nurse doing an intake on a severely overweight child. While the mother and the child wait, the 10-year-old child is drinking a large soda and eating a Big Mac. The child is suffering from frequent urination, fatigue, hunger, and irritability. The family has a family history of diabetes and hypertension.

A 32-year-old Latino man has a severe case of hypertension. He is having difficulty breathing, is tired and has severe headaches. He takes medication for his high blood pressure. His mother is also your patient, Doña Luisa, who is a very devout Christian. He does not go to church. She is widowed and Luis, her son, lives with her.
During the visit he tells you “My mother told me that God is punishing me for my bad behavior.” “Doctor, I go to work every day early and come straight home. On the weekends I go out with my friends. Sometimes I drink too much but am not that bad. She is always scaring me with God!”

FINAL PROJECT MILESTONE 2: ISSUE STATEMENT AND IDENTIFICATION OF A POLICY

A primary competency for advocacy is communicating with legislators about the social problems and policies you want to change. This means you will need to be well versed in both the social problems that connect with you and the polices that exist to address them.
In Week 2, you identified a social problem. You have since worked to narrow your focus and, separately, considered how policies play a major role in the functions of social work agencies and organizations. For the Assignment this week, you start to bring all these pieces together. First, you develop an issue statement to concisely capture your selected social problem through appropriate facts and questions that solicit a response. Then you identify a state or local policy that currently works to address your selected social problem and resolve your issue statement. (attached below from previous weeks)

Review the Issue Statement Sample document in the Learning Resources this week. (attached below)
Search for and select at least one scholarly article that deepens your understanding of—or narrows the context for—your social problem.
Search for and select at least one source that explores the population(s) impacted by your selected social problem. This can be a news article or other popular media—for example, you might select a source where someone details their personal story for how they were impacted by the social problem.
Search for and select at least one local or state policy that works to address your selected social problem for the affected populations.
Use the Legislative Proposal Assessment from the Council on Social Work Education resource in the Learning Resources this week. This worksheet does not have to be submitted for your Assignment, but it is a useful tool to help you search for, select, and evaluate a policy.
Submit a 3- to 5-page paper, addressing the following:
Issue Statement: Create a 1-paragraph issue statement that hooks your audience and concisely communicates the imperative to address your selected social problem. Include the following:
In 1 paragraph, define your social problem and the population impacted by it.
In 1–2 paragraphs, explain your critical reasons for why the public and decision makers, as well as social workers, need to advocate for change.
In 1–2 paragraphs, describe what happens in communities if your goal to alleviate the problem is realized.
Policy Review: Summarize your selected policy, its relationships to the social problem, and the expected results. Then address the following:
Is your selected policy dictated by local or state statute—or a combination thereof?
How does the policy address your issue statement? Or what is missing?
What are the different sections, or components, of the policy?
How long has the current policy been in place?
Who supports and who opposes the policy?
What changes, or amendments, have been made to the policy?
Explain how this policy affects clients you might see in a clinical setting and why, as a clinical social worker, it would be important to advocate for change.
