The Four Functions of Mythology

Once you have viewed the Joseph Campbell videos, you will need to read the three stories that have been provided for you: the Enuma Elish (Mesopotamian Creation Story); Odin and Ymir (Norse Creation Story); The Origin of Japan and Her People (Japanese Creation Story); and The Buffalo Wife (Blackfoot Myth). After you have read and analyzed each story, write a 2.5-3 page paper in which you thoroughly explain how the four functions of mythology are illustrated in two of the stories. Describe the impact you believe each story had on the culture and the people who produced it, why the myth still carries meaning today, and explain which of the three stories you enjoyed the most. Remember to follow the CEC structure in your writing. Your paper should be double-spaced. Please use a size twelve font in either Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial.

Task 1: Based on a real-world brand of your choice, please conduct a critical analysis on its current marketing activities using tools covered in this module, such as the marketing mix (4-Ps), SWOT, and TP (targeting and positioning) of its product offerings. The material could be the company’s official website, company reports, any advertisements, social media communications, credible media sources (such as BBC, the Times, Financial Times, Marketing Week, the Guardian and the Economist) as well as online databases such as Mintel, or a combination of these. You should reference these sources in your coursework to support your observations. Task 2: Building upon task 1, propose a marketing strategy for your chosen product/service. The strategy should aim to help improve the marketing mix.

Completion of this assessment will require desk research into the rationale for the choice of the selected company and the chosen marketing strategy. There are plenty of sources both in the library and online. There is no expectation or requirement for you to contact the selected company or for conducting primary research as this would require ethical approval, which you do not have for this assignment.

Case Study 2: What would you do if you were in charge?

Read the case study (Prince George’s County ) on p. 117 (Stevens, 2008) and answer the underlying question “What would you do if you were in charge?” by providing an assessment using as a minimum, two crisis intervention strategies outlined on pp. 79-82 ( James & Gilliland, 2017) and any other applicable information from our weekly readings.

Case Study:
By any measure, Prince George’s County (near Washington, DC) police have shot and killed people at rates that exceed those of nearly any other large police force in the nation. Since 1990, they have shot 122 people, killing 47 of them. By one standard—the number of fatal shootings per officer—they killed more people than any major city or county police force from 1990 through 2000. Almost half of those shot were unarmed, and many had committed no crime. Unlike many departments, Prince George’s top police officials concluded that every one of the shootings was justified. Examples of the shootings ruled justified pertains to an unarmed construction worker who was shot in the back after he was detained in a fast-food restaurant. An unarmed suspect died in a fusillade of 66 bullets as he tried to flee from police in a car. A homeless man was shot when police mistook his portable radio for a gun. And an unarmed man was killed after he pulled off the road to relieve himself. An investigation by The Washington Post found that during the past decade, Prince George’s police miscalculated the threat they faced dozens of times—mistaking an object for a gun or a sudden movement for an act of aggression. Moreover, the police department defended shootings by issuing reports that were riddled with inconsistencies, contradictions, and half-truths.

The crisis intervention strategies are attached.

Barnett and Finnemore paper

Barnett and Finnemore define pathologies as “behavior…that violates the self-understood core goals of the organization” (p. 38). The five mechanisms they identify (pp. 39-40) produce, and sometimes combine to produce, pathologies. However, those mechanisms often do not result in goal-contravening behavior. For example, normalization of deviance (from rules) led to UN election monitoring and peacekeeping, neither of which appears in the UN Charter; insulation (from political pressures) has enabled international courts and tribunals to perform valuable work trying those suspected of committing egregious crimes. In other words, the presence of these five mechanisms is not dispositive; IOs do not always or even frequently engage in pathological behaviors.

This suggests, then, that their model might only be partially correct. Identify two or three generalizable factors that appear to be common to at least two, if not all three of the cases studies B&F examine that are particularly relevant to understanding how pathologies develop/occur. By generalizable I mean factors potentially applicable in other cases, not specifics germane to a particular case. For example, the introduction of cholera by Nepali peacekeepers in Haiti which led to the deaths of over 10,000 Haitians helps explain the substantial shortcomings of the UN mission in Haiti, but not in other cases. So cholera might be reframed as “health crises.”
Be sure to:
precisely and concisely identify and explain the factors;
articulate why the factors you identified are central/important;
provide an understanding of how the factors were manifested in at least two of B&F’s cases; and
address how the factors you identify interact with the mechanisms to produce pathological behavior.
GUIDELINES.
Papers must be in 11 or 12 point, Times New Roman font. They should have normal margins, be single-spaced, and be no more than one page.
Use only the Barnett and Finnemore text. Abbreviate it as B&F. Citations should appear at the end of sentences in parentheses, but before end punctation, in the following form: (B&F, 39). The number refers to the page on which the quotation or piece of evidence or paraphrase appears.
Dispense with long-winded introductory and concluding paragraphs, and headers that list details such as your name, the class, and the date. These things are not necessary. Focus on making every word count!

Curious

1. Immigration is one issue that intersects government, politics and social Justice. What is fair?
Discuss whether or not the children of undocumented immigrants or children brought into the country illegally by their parents should be entitled to a free K-12 education in the U.S. and possibly other (humanitarian) services.
Take into account all your readings for the past weeks as you ponder the question and discuss your views.
Also take into consideration how questions surrounding immigration have become extremely divisive; you cannot imitate politicians or echo their talking points. You will respond with civility, thoughtfulness, and viewpoints argued from and supported by credible sources (Please no MSNBC, FOX, Breitbart, TYT, etc.).

2. Was financial reward the primary reason you chose your major or was there some other reason? After you have pondered this question for a few minutes, explain why you did or did not choose your major primarily financial reward.
Now, do a little research and list the three most financially rewarding majors and the three least financially rewarding majors.
Do your findings support or argue against the claims made by Krugman, Ehrenreich, and or Reich?
READINGS: Delusions of Grandeur by Henry Louis Gates, Jr
The Death of Horatio Alger by Paul Krugman
Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer by Robert Reich

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a career based on economic remuneration versus one based on love of the work itself. What advice would you give to liberal arts majors who want to follow their passion? Explain.Which reading for this week has you thinking about your career choice given the economic situations described in your readings and video clips? Make sure you reference any sources you use to strengthen your discussion.

3. Think of your readings for this week and reflect on the messages transmitted via our media and pop culture. You might want to consider, for example, Dave Barry’s essay and Deborah Ross’ essay, which seem to show similar concerns about the image of men and women, as depicted by the media.
READINGS: 2 Live Crew, Decoded by Henry Louis Gates Jr., 2 Live Crew, Decoded – The New York Times
My Creature from the Black Lagoon by Stephen King,
Red, White and Beer by Dave Barry,
Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling by Todd Gitlin,
Escape from Wonderland: Disney and the Female Imagination by Deborah Ross,

Do you think these images will be a relatively accurate picture of who we are today? What image of the early 21st century (what image of us) do you believe future generations will have? If you have some media example that sticks out in your mind (a clip of Keeping Up with the Kardashians or Real Housewives of New Jersey, ad images, a political ad or some cultural image) please feel free to share. Do you think these images affect us as a society? How so? Make sure you reference any sources.

4.Susan Sontag’s essay discusses what is uniquely powerful about photography as an art form. Moreover, she writes that the photographs coming out of Abu Ghraib “are us.” Whether or not you agree with the implications of her statement, the power of the Abu Ghraib photos are undeniable.
READINGS: Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie,
Finding Neverland by David Gates,
Regarding the Torture of Others by Susan Sontag,
Saving the Life That Is Your Own: The Importance of Models in the Artist’s Life by Alice Walker,

Search for an image (it does not have to be a recent image) that is “us.” Explain why you think the photo or image captures something of who we are as a people and a nation. Make sure to include a copy of the image or a link to the image in your post. Reference your source.
Now that you found and explained why you found your image compelling, as an image that somehow captures us as Americans, consider this: Many school districts are facing severe budget cuts and shortages. As education budgets get tightened arts programs are often the first to go. Discuss why you believe the arts should either be cut or supported. Use the readings to help explain your position or feel free to argue against some of the opinions voiced in the readings as part of your discussion. Please reference your sources.

5.Do a little investigating and find out what environmental issue (or issues) local groups, your local government, or your state government are trying to tackle. What is/are the specific environmental issue/s (describe the issue/s)? How are you connected to this issue, if at all? What credible source did you find? Are you concerned – why or why not? What are 2 or 3 broader possible issues related to the environmental problem (for example, the political and economic impact of the problem)? (State Government-Mississippi)

Now, assemble a [dream] team of 3 to 5 experts from the academic community and organizations looking at your type of local issue and discuss the following:
What problems have they been assigned to tackle and why? In other words, what is it about their skill or knowledge that makes them suited to help the community solve this problem? The special team you assemble may address or reflect your specific concern/s about this local environmental issue or issues.

Finally, what academic knowledge and skills are needed to address the environmental issue/s you describe?
