THIS WEEK’S LECTURE:
Team members are often united by a task that is before them. Projects, problem solving, and planning give the team a purpose to rally around. Each team member brings a set of skills to the team that should help the team to persist and to meet certain milestones when working on projects. However, sometimes factors arise that can reduce the effectiveness of any team.
Lencioni warns about five such factors that include an absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results (Lencioni, 2002). Each factor alone can distract a team from reaching its optimum level of productivity and effectiveness.
Lencioni (2002) found that teams that lack trust also avoid conflict in various ways. However, avoiding conflict may cause other problems for the team. Therefore conflicts must be addressed. Conflict or constructive disagreement may lead to a robust dialogue that facilitates team members being able to develop innovative solutions to problems.
Levi & Askay (2021) identify sources of conflict that include, but are not limited to, personality differences, poor meeting management and also team members having hidden agendas. Some team members may seek to avoid conflict continually and some may actually cause it by trying to resist the guidance and direction established by the team leader and other team members.
Those who seek to avoid conflict may indeed have a fear of conflict while other team members may find conflict as a way of achieving personal goals. Under good experienced leadership both types of team members can become productive members. Levi and Askay (2021) identify the use of collaboration and compromise as approaches to managing conflict. The two approaches can be combined for the purpose of generating the best outcomes for the whole team.
Bridges (2019) advocates for the use of listening to others who are involved in the conflict and also endeavoring to find common ground in the situation. Collaboration, compromise and common ground can be reached if team members seek to act in the best interest of the team by actively listening to one another. By doing so understanding can develop and the team can focus on achieving its goals in a productive manner.Team members are often united by a task that is before them.
