Great Migration
After reviewing this week’s Healey readings and viewing the video “Sweet Home Chicago: The Promised Land,” discuss which changes in technology, society, and world events were most significant and essential in setting the stage for the “Great Migration” of African Americans to the North. Which factors were essential to this migration? How did it change American race relations?

The cultural analysis paper must be 5 pages in Word document format. It must be typed in Times New Roman or Arial, 11 or 12 pt font; double-spaced; have 1-inch margins; adhere to standard MLA style; and have a works cited page. The works cited page is not included in the final page count.
As a cultural analysis paper, the task of this assignment is to choose one of the cultural studies readings and use it as a lens to analyze an everyday, ordinary element of culture – a person, place, or thing that is commonly known in American culture. These terms are admittedly dynamic and can be difficult to define, however, it is the task of your paper to construct strong arguments to support a well thought out thesis. You will analyze your topic from the perspective of the text you choose, develop a thesis about your topic, and demonstrate your understanding of both. In cultural studies, as some of our readings have explored, what constitutes an aspect of culture can be any aspect of any given culture. These can be events, materials, and/or social behavioral patterns. These can be centered around any number of phenomena, such as ethnicity, geography, education, popular media, broadcast media or online media content, sports, national holidays, government legislation, music, political elections, public health crises, etc. This is an exercise in writing from a cultural studies perspective, so choose an aspect of culture that you can establish is broadly relevant and socially significant.
Sources and Citations Requirements: All support for your argument must be rigorous, credible, and objectifiable. All sources must be properly quoted within the text and cited in the works cited page: All theoretical interpretations must be supported by scholarly sources; All information about popular culture must be sourced by popular sources (ex., trade journalism, etc); All technical information must be supported by industry sources (ex., trade reports, governmental research data, etc.). Support your thesis and all subsequent arguments, statements, etc., with sources:
Use ONE of the course readings to use as your critical point of view.
Use SIX sources, including ONE of the course readings. Multiple sources will be used to introduce, contextualize, and explain your topic. The course reading will serve as a lens to make the original argument (thesis) about your topic.
All citations must be in MLA format and must be reputable (peer reviewed publications, reputable journalism, or professional/technical reports).
Do not use the following as sources of information: generic websites; crowd sourced websites; online dictionaries; documentaries; broadcast news on mass media. (In general, do not rely on WebMD, Google, Wikipedia, com; Netflix/Prime/Hulu documentaries; MSNBC/CNN/FOX/etc.)
Do not use information based on common sense or personal knowledge/belief. Do not conduct interviews or field work; All anecdotal information should be avoided for this assignment, meaning you cannot make statements without a source because personal proclamations, opinions, and observations are not credible.

Write an essay analyzing two scenarios using a firms code of conduct
For this Midterm paper, you will be learning about how to navigate ethical dilemmas in the workplace by using the code of conduct for a firm. Imagine you work for Carmax and you have encountered a couple of ethical dilemmas at work. Explain how you would go about addressing these issues.
Scenario 1. You work for a part of the firm that involves billing customers for hours worked. You often complete a work task at different times (e.g., 1 hour and 36 minutes, 2 hours and ten minutes) and your manager says that you should ‘round up’ to the next hour. You are not sure if this is the correct way to handle the situation.
Scenario 2. Everyone from work went out for drinks to celebrate a coworker’s birthday. The day after, you look at the videos you recorded at the bar and you notice one of the managers getting very close to your coworker in the video. The manager seems drunk and appears to sway towards your coworker and your coworker flinches.
Analyze the TWO scenarios above. Using Carmax’s code of conduct, answer the following questions:
1. What relevant guidance does your firm’s code of conduct provide for the scenarios? Is the guidance sufficient? Rate the quality of the guidance from poor to excellent.
2. What level of cognitive moral development seems to be reflected in the code of conduct? Provide 2 examples to support your point.
3. Does the code of conduct address any biases or heuristics?
4. Do you feel comfortable following the code of conduct? What would be your preferred approach to handling the situation?
WRITTEN ANALYSES
The paper should be 2 page single-spaced and 12 point font.
Papers will be graded based upon the persuasiveness of the analyses, knowledge of course concepts, and the quality of writing. A persuasive analysis entails a full grasp and application of the concepts (e.g., cognitive moral development, heuristics) as well as good evidence from the code of conduct. This is a short paper so you should not insert long quotes.
All information that is not common knowledge needs citations at the end of the sentence. You must cite any reference to websites at the end of the sentence. If you use more than 3 words in a row from a source, make it a direct quote with quotation marks. Paraphrased sentences do not need quotation marks, but they do require citations. If your grandma doesn’t know something, it isn’t common knowledge so insert a cite.

Primary Source Analysis Essay
Watch the documentary film entitled “Moving On: The Hunger for Land in Zimbabwe,” available on this link: https://archive.org/details/movingonthehungerforlandinzimbabwe, and write an essay analyzing its contents and what they say about the challenges and opportunities for economic development in post-colonial Zimbabwe. Your essay should be between 500 and 700 words in length. Rather than presenting a mere summary of the film, you should show that you are able to apply the kinds of questions that historians use when engaging with sources of evidence from the past. Your essay should engage with the following questions:
When was this film made? Who made it? (1 point)
Why was this film made? What was the main objective for making it? (1 point)
What are three main issues that this film deals with, and what do they tell us about the opportunities and challenges that the nation of Zimbabwe faced soon after independence from colonial rule? (6 points)

Essay Structure (well thought out introduction, a number of body paragraphs and a fitting conclusion) (1 point)
Citation of sources (use the Chicago Manual’s [foot]notes and bibliography style) (1 point)
“Go Green”
Brainstorm at least one way a school can “go green,” and discuss what effect(s) this could potentially have on children’s health. You are welcome to research what schools are currently doing that works as a “green” solution, but remain focused on how children’s health is affected by the initiative.

7. What was the impact of the epidemic in Greece? (Thucydides) (Article #14)
The impact of the epidemic in Greece was the contacts of the agricultural societies, Afro-Eurasia. One of the outbreaks was the plague in Athens in the Peloponnesian War. With some at first, they had no immunity which made the disease more catastrophic to them. “One of the earliest descriptions of a major epidemic is that of the plague outbreak in Athens contained in The History of the Peloponnesian War by the Greek”(1).
8. What are some of the good features of ancient Athens? How was it superior to Sparta? (Pericles) (Article #15)
Some of Ancient Athens’ good features were for one, one of the largest and democratic cities in Greece. They “gained glory” because of defeating the first Persian invasion. It is superior to Sparta because they defeated the second Persian invasion but Athens still took the lead. “Though the Spartan army contributed to the final defeat of the second Persian invasion the following year, Athens took the lead in constructing a coalition of states that carried a naval counteroffensive across the Aegean Sea”(1)

10. What is justice according to Socrates? (Plato) (Article #17)
According to Socrates, justice is that a person must choose one among the pursuits available in the city, the one best suited to their natural abilities. Justice is also maintaining one’s independence and not meddling in others’ business. Apart from the fact that someone must choose something that suits their needs or maintain their independence, Socrates has stated “And we did say that justice would be what remained when we had found the other three” (pg. 1).
11. What are Aristotle’s opinions about the place of women in society? (Aristotle) (Article #18)
In Aristotle’s opinion he thinks that the place of a woman in society is that under all the rules they have set, she will be the mistress of her home, and all that belongs to it will be under her care. There should be on one entering her house without her husband’s knowledge, and she should dread gossip from gadding women above all else. As said in the article, “a woman should be minded to bear an orderly rule; for it seems not fitting that a man should know all that passes within the house. But in all other matters, let it be her aim to obey her husband; giving no heed to public affairs, nor desiring any part in arranging the marriages of her children” (pg. 2).
