reflection critically engaging with the key concepts and ideas

Students will be expected to demonstrate they have read and understood the assigned materials by engaging with the key ideas/concepts (not simply summarizing the articles) from the assigned reading materials for the given week.

creating a plan for a Unified Command for an incident of your choice

As we have covered this week, there is a lot to plan for when predicting events that may occur. It is always better to have resources available. Remember that recourse covers a wide range of items to include, but not limited to:
Funding
Equipment
Personnel
Individuals with special skill sets
Housing
Warehouses
Etc……
At the beginning of this class, I am sure that you only thought of the participants of the Incident Command System (ICS) to only include emergency personnel, such as Police, Fire, and rescue personnel. As we have learned that there are much more individuals involved. An Incident Commander cannot be tasked with all aspects of an incident. As we discussed, the Unified Command and Emergency Operations Center Models must be established to respond effectively to a situation and preplans have to be in effect. Preplans is an effective step in responding to an incident because all of the difficult tasks of planning are already done. For example, in the tragic events of the FIU Bridge Collapse and the Surfside Building Collapse, there was heavy machinery, such as cranes and other equipment that was already accessible for emergency workers, along with the funding sources already secured.
For this discussion, you are tasked with creating a plan for a Unified Command for an incident of your choice (do not choose one that another student had already posted). You will have to list, address, and sure the resources listed above in addition to the who are the entries that are sharing operational commands and a chain of command model of your choice.
Grading Criteria
Each reflection post should have the following format:
A 300-word minimum initial post
A 150-word response to at least two classmates (each response should be at least 150 words or more)
Make sure to address all of the questions posed. Please make the replies to your fellow students, meaningful and if you disagree with something that your fellow student wrote, please be respectful.
Note: Proofread your work before posting as you will not be able to edit your original post afterward. As we have covered this week, there is a lot to plan for when predicting events that may occur. Immigration/Discussing “dreamers”

Assignment: “The Persuasive Effects of Quantitative Data or, ‘That’s What Studies Show’”
When arguments are being made for or against a particular political policy, bill, or even party stance, the phrase “studies show” is often invoked as a way to shore up the validity of specific claims. Known as an appeal to quantitative data, this form of argumentation uses statistics, research results, and the conclusions of experts to make its case.
For this essay, you will explain how quantitative data is being used to forward a particular claim. Your job is not to make the quantitative argument yourself, but to analyze a specific example of how quantitative data is being used to support a political claim. To do this, you will focus on the topic below, examine both the evidence provided and an example you have found yourself, and write an essay that details how these sources are deploying quantitative evidence.

Topic: Immigration/Discussing “dreamers”
Recently, there has been significant bipartisan support for “dreamers”: immigrants, without citizenship, who were brought to the U.S. as children. For example, in July 2017, Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) came together to introduce a new Dream Act, thus “reminding Americans that there is strong bipartisan support for Dreamers.” This reflects 2016 Morning Consult and Politico polls which report that “78% of American voters support giving Dreamers the chance to stay permanently in America, including 73% of people who voted for President Donald Trump.”[1]

Pre-Writing Steps:
Review the research that has been provided for you about this topic. On your own, find one additional source that adds to the arguments in the three sources from the provided list. Make sure that this new source and the other three also used quantitative data and that it works well with these three sources:
1. https://www.americanprogress.org/article/results-from-a-nationwide-survey-of-daca-recipients-illustrate-the-programs-impact/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/results-from-a-nationwide-survey-of-daca-recipients-illustrate-the-programs-impact/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/results-from-a-nationwide-survey-of-daca-recipients-illustrate-the-programs-impact/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/results-from-a-nationwide-survey-of-daca-recipients-illustrate-the-programs-impact/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/results-from-a-nationwide-survey-of-daca-recipients-illustrate-the-programs-impact/

2. https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-threat-daca-cost-states-billions-dollars/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-threat-daca-cost-states-billions-dollars/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-threat-daca-cost-states-billions-dollars/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-threat-daca-cost-states-billions-dollars/https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-threat-daca-cost-states-billions-dollars/

3. The dreamer incarceration rate
(LINKED TEXT ABOVE)

Note: While you must have a total of at least 4 sources. I do not want your argument to be hampered by unintentionally weak sources.

Paper Guidelines:
Write an essay that explains how these four sources use quantitative data to support their arguments about dreamers. Your essay should be centered on a clear and direct thesis and should cite and analyze the sources within the body of the paper. Ultimately, the goal of the paper is to explicitly illustrate how quantitative data is being used in these sources: how statistics, research results, charts and graphs bolster—or weaken—the overall argument of these texts. As with Essay 1, use Toulmin’s structure of claim, evidence, warrant, and discuss the appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos when appropriate. Ultimately, you must cite at least four secondary sources in this essay: three that have been provided for you and one that you have found on your own (see note above about this point).

Policy Practice

The purpose of the asynchronous assignment is to address your understanding, thoughts and analysis of the reading. The assignment should be word-processed, double space, with one inch margins, in 12-point Times New Roman font. Included are the the chapters 6 and 7 of the Jannson text.

address the post-disaster phase as a phasedown of shelter operations has begun

Many people think that once a disaster has passed that all of the hard work is over. As we know, living in South Florida, hurricanes are an ongoing threat to our community. With the knowledge of an impending hurricane, usually shelters are opened to house individuals in high-risk areas, the elderly, and the homeless. Even when a hurricane is one of those that result in little to no devastation, doesn’t mean that it is easy just to close the shelters and go back to normal operations.
Based upon what we have learned in this week’s lessons you are going to address the post-disaster phase as a phasedown of shelter operations has begun, the American Red Cross Disaster Operations Supervisor has directed you to start closing down shelters and to begin re-assigning shelter staff personnel and releasing those that are no longer required. Additionally, the individuals that were in the unaffected high-risk areas can go home, however, may need assistance. Additionally, arraignments have to be made for the transportation of the elderly and some of the homeless individuals do not want to leave as they have nowhere to do.
What NIMS Management Characteristic are you supporting? Discuss the steps and actions you would take to address all of the above issues. Additionally, address any other issues that may arise that I did not list above and how you would address them.
Grading Criteria
