Discuss the class, gender, and race conditions of colonial life and the impact of the Declaration on these groups.

How did the condition of certain groups, such as women, Black people, and Native people, reveal a contradiction in the Declaration of Independence? Discuss the class, gender, and race conditions of colonial life and the impact of the Declaration on these groups. Consider what the Constitution guaranteed for white privileged male landowners vs. what it didn’t provide the majority of the population. Consider the impact of the meaning of “Republican Motherhood” and the birth of white woman’s suffrage. Who were the movers and shakers in these movements?

Women’s History:

In what what ways were antebellum women radical in promoting equal rights and as abolitionists? In what ways were they traditional? Were they feminists? What role did black freed women play in the movement for equality, where they treated equally with white women? How did black abolitionist work together to support woman’s suffrage and women’s equality. Who were the primary activists on both sides of the woman question and emancipation? How did white women identify with the dehumanization of slavery and did they believe in equality between the races?

3. EXPANSION WEST AND SLAVERY

Consider the arguments over the expansion of slavery made by both northerners and southerners in the aftermath of the U.S. victory over Mexico (1848). Who had the more compelling case? Or did each side make equally significant arguments? What are the economic and political issues raised by having an imbalance between free and slave states? Why did the balance of free and slave states matter? What role did white and black Abolitionists play in this process? Who were the leaders in these movements and what influence did they have on the Civil War?

Consider social, political, and economic equality during and after the Civil War. In what ways did Radical Reconstruction address and secure these forms of equality? Where did it fall short? Consider the differences between the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and 15th Amendments. What does the Fourteenth Amendment do that the Thirteenth does not? Why was the Fifteenth Amendment necessary? What impact did these Amendments have during Reconstruction and after for African Americans and white womenWhat was the economic and political reality for the Black population in the South?

Write an essay about two (2) of the poems read for class this semester and how each work is affected by one or two structural aspects like rhyme, meter, symbolism, or tone.

– Write an essay about two (2) of the poems read for class this semester and how each work is affected by one or two structural aspects like rhyme, meter, symbolism, or tone. How do the structural aspects you chose help (or hinder) the reader as they try to understand the meaning of the works?

An example would be: How enjambment in “My Last Duchess” affects how we understand the Duke’s monologue.

Explain what you have drawn and explain what the welfare effects are of opening up to trade.

Economic and Legal Integration of Europe
Homework Exercise
Module 1 – Economics
The benefits of integrated markets
Literature:
– Neal 2007, 3
Background readings on basics of Welfare analysis:
– Mankiw, Ch. 4, 7, 9 from Essentials of Economics
Lecture:
– L.E1a: What is European Economics?
– L.E1b: Economics of Customs Union
– L.E1c: Completing the Internal Market
In this module’s tutorial we will take a closer look at welfare theory, by using a simple market model
– the most basic tool in the economist’s toolbox.
We will apply welfare theory to analyse the benefits of integrated markets. Prepare yourself for your
tutorial by providing an answer to the following questions (some involve the drawing of a graph):
1. Draw a domestic market diagram for an agricultural market (eg. milk or butter) by drawing
demand and supply curves. (Draw by hand and take a picture to include it in your
assignment; or use an (online) application.) Make sure you name the axes and curves
correctly. Draw the equilibrium, and highlight the consumer surplus and producer surplus
(their ‘welfare’);
2. Explain what do the consumer surplus and producer surplus represent in this diagram?
Explain why an equilibrium price and -quantity would come about, and explain whether the
equilibrium is ‘beneficial’ or ‘good’ according to you;
3. Suppose the domestic market is opening up to trade on the world market, where the price of
the agricultural good is much higher. Draw a new graph in which you show what happens to
the price, quantities consumed, produced and imported, and to consumer and producer
surplus. Explain what you have drawn and explain what the welfare effects are of opening up
to trade. Is opening up to trade ‘beneficial’ or ‘good’ for this country? Why, or why not?;
4. Suppose the home country is one of the Member States of the EU. Prior to Brexit, this
Member State was a net importer of beef from the United Kingdom (UK). Imagine the EU
and the UK had not succeeded in striking a Trade Agreement (a so-called ‘No Deal’) and the
EU would have to be forced to impose a tariff of 40% on beef imports from outside the
Union, following WTO rules.
Draw a new graph depicting this Member State’s situation. Make sure to include the Price-
UK for beef in your diagram and draw Price-UK+Tariff. What are the welfare effects of the
imposition of the tariff? How does this affect beef consumption in the Member State? And
explain who would be benefiting and who would be suffering from the No Deal
arrangement?
5. Explain whether you think this Member State would be better off with the trade agreement
that was ultimately signed between the EU and the UK: which is the creation of a Free Trade
Area (FTA) between the UK and the EU? What are the differences between a Free Trade
Area (FTA) and a Customs Union (CU)? What arguments for and against the FTA
arrangement with the UK could you come up with?

Discuss the formal construction of an effective argument and then present your argument on one of three topics: environmental conservation, the impact of technology on education in America, or psychological impact of social media.

Discuss the formal construction of an effective argument and then present your argument on one of three topics: environmental conservation, the impact of technology on education in America, or psychological impact of social media. Here are some suggest questions to consider for your paper:
1. Why did you choose this topic? It was in alignment with your values? It was in the news? You heard someone else discussing it and thought it was interesting?
2. What is the overall impact on society of your topic, either social or economic or both? What does the research say?
3. What is your position/perspective on your chosen topic and what is the counter position/perspective?
4. How did doing this exercise in critical thinking impact how you think about the topic you choose to discuss?
5. Discuss what you learned about yourself that you didn’t know prior to completing this exercise, and how this newfound insight will support your future development.
