300 Words about: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is a work of creative nonfiction, a genre that deals in verifiable facts but relays them using storytelling and other creative techniques. IT IS NOT A NOVEL, or work of total fiction. The book is
told using three different “storylines”: Henrietta and her family’s history, the author’s experience researching with the Lacks
family, and the science behind HeLa. These storylines are “braided” together to form a coherent, holistic examination of the issues from several different perspectives.
As you become familiar with the people and places and history and science that are wrapped up together in this book,
decide which of the three “braided” stories appeals to you most at this point.

PART ONE (at least 300 words)
1. Discuss why you prefer this particular storyline and identify at least two examples from different chapters to illustrate what you’ve learned or appreciated from that thread so far.
2. Also observe the types of research that the author uses to move your chosen storyline forward in these two examples or chapters.
3. It may help to review the early passage, “A Few Words about This Book” in which Skloot discusses her various
research sources to ensure accuracy in a narrative form.
4. As you introduce examples and research, cite the page numbers where they appear in your edition.

I would agree with the text that the most effective leaders in education that I’ve known have had a high degree of emotional intelligence (p.19). According to the text, the “components of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills” (p. 19). I’ve worked mainly in alternative and special education, so most of the leaders would fall under the “Caring Leadership” category (p.11). The text explains that Caring Leadership involves showing respect and concern for people. “Effective leaders who fit into this group also demonstrate behavior that Psychologist Carl Rogers explained as unconditional positive regard. By this he meant caring about and respecting another person despite one’s feelings or judgments about that person’s actions. As religious leaders have said, one may hate the sin yet still love the sinner” (p.10).
I also appreciated the 11 Summit Leadership lessons from Sir Edmund Hillary. Although we read about what makes a good leader, and how to become one every term, these lessons seemed especially relevant and meaningful. “Lesson 4: When selecting a team, ensure they are multi-skilled and have a sense of humor, in times of difficulty you want to have someone who can laugh at adversity. The last thing Hillary wanted was a team member going into a panic, or worse, a person who would rather look for a scapegoat” (p.70). This is probably the most honest piece of advice I’ve ever read in a text and I’m here for it.

In my experience it can be difficult to be an effective leader, but it is not impossible. With time, practice, and patience anyone could be an effective leader. From the reading, one of the things that stood out to me the most are the characteristics of a good leader, specifically a credible leader. In education I have come across people with little to no experience working in positions higher than myself. This tends to be discouraging because in turn I have to explain to them how to do something and then rely on their input and support for a topic they do not know enough about. This also helps to establish trust and as Rosenbach, et al. (2019) states “leaders establish trust by taking actions that are consistent both over time and with what the leader has said” (p. 11). To be a leader it takes someone who can find a balance between implementing changes and reassuring staff that they are seen, heard, and appreciated. Sometimes those things can get lost. I have worked with enough ineffective leaders to know what I wish to stay away from, but I have also not seen enough effective leaders to know what I wish to be one day as a leader. I have an idea in my head and I am learning ways to implement that as best as I can.

In my experience, leadership can make or break an organization. Leaders can be natural born or more often than not, are cultivated through time, effort, and personal will to want to improve. Rosenbach, et al. (2019) states that “leadership is always a personal choice” and I cannot agree more. When a leader has personal motivations to want to work with their organization to improve it and move it forward, the organization grows. Leaders are hard to describe, as I have worked with some leaders that are hands-on, involved in every aspect of the organization, as well as worked with great leaders that are hands-off and delegate tasks to individuals within an organization. However, one aspect of leaders that I have experienced is that they always have an open line of communication to listen to and address the concerns of the people they work with. Reading through the first section of the book by Rosenbach, et al., I would argue the leaders I have worked with that have been successful are classified as transformational leaders. The leaders that have been effective have “[enabled] followers to perform beyond expectations by sharing power and authority and ensuring that followers understand how to use them” (Rosenbach, et al., 2019). Leaders that are great, from what I have observed, are involved and informed. I have worked with leaders who were not involved and informed, and rather were in the position for personal gains, and that led to a lot of distrust and negative feelings in working for that particular leader. At the end of the day, “leadership makes a difference” (Rosenbach, et al., 2019).

SAMPLE of feedback comment On Y.Dpost based on SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
Hello Y.D :
R: I really enjoyed reading about your experience, when you said, in my experience, leadership can make or break an organization. Leaders can be natural born or often, are cultivated through time, effort, and personal will to want to improve. I agree that leaders are naturally born, and people have that thing inside that you want to follow, but there are those who are willing to work and do the best they can and that leads to great leaders as well.
I: Have you considered looking at, the leaders that you worked with and compare them with those leaders you remember when you were young at school. For me, that is the first thing I think about when you talk about leaders, I must think about the beginning leaders I have had in my day.
S: You might want to continue to add leaders that are great, from what I have observed, are involved and informed. I have worked with leaders who were not involved and informed, and rather were in the position for personal gains, and that led to a lot of distrust and negative feelings in working for that leader.
E: Perhaps you will be able to add and expand on “leadership makes a difference” the idea and the strength behind the words, leaders are genuine and great, and it is something to work for and we should be grateful for the good ones.

500 Words on : The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

The story of Henrietta Lacks and how her cancer cells were captured and distributed is rooted in a fixed time and place in history. By the end of “Part Two: Death,” there have been numerous examples of how race relations and disparate opportunities framed Henrietta’s particular case, as well as examples of historical practices dating back to slavery. In addition to how medical research was conducted, there are many social aspects of the Lacks family story that are framed in the book in racial terms, including their relationship to the white Lackses in Clover and their distrust of Johns Hopkins and the medical establishment.
PART ONE (at least 300 words)
Reflect on at least two remarkable facts from the book in which race played a significant role (“facts” are verifiable events or information, not a writer’s opinion or feelings). Cite the exact pages on which the facts appear in your edition.
The two facts in which race has a role must come from different chapters, at least one of which must come from “Part 2: Death.” Feel free to start your own discussion thread or join one already in progress as long as you’re contributing new angles, ideas, or interpretations.
What surprises you or intrigues you about this information? How do you think these facts might contribute to conspiracy theories about the medical establishment in the African American community?
PART TWO (at least 200 words)
Respond respectfully to another student’s posting (SEE ATTACHED POSTING); See what you can add to the conversation, corroborate, and compare to other examples inside and outside the book.
