The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

In August, 2013, the Lacks family and the National Institutes of Health came to a settlement
(Links to an external site.)
about handling data from research done on HeLa cells: it will be stored in the institutes’ database of genotypes and phenotypes. Future researchers will have to apply for access and submit annual reports about their research. An N.I.H. panel, including two Lacks family members, will review the applications. The settlement does not provide for any monetary reimbursement to the family.
David Korn, Vice Provost for Research at Harvard University, is quoted in the Skloot book making a case against patient ownership of discarded cells, saying, “I think people are morally obligated to allow their bits and pieces to be used to advance knowledge to help others. Since everybody benefits, everybody can accept the small risks of having their tissue scraps used in research” (321).

Christoph Lengauer, the Austrian researcher at Johns Hopkins who showed Deborah and Zakariyya their mother’s cells and how much they were worth on the open market, disagrees and compares human cells to another resource: “When you find oil on somebody’s property, it doesn’t automatically belong to them, but they do get a portion of the profits” (267).
PART ONE (at least 300 words)

Explain what, if anything, you think is owed to the Lacks family. Do you agree with Korn or Lengauer about patient’s
rights, or do you have an alternative view altogether?
Cite at least two quotes from two different chapters in the final section of the book (other than those above) that illustrate why you feel the way you do, including page numbers where they appear.

Choose one of the following epidemic or pandemic diseases: Bubonic Plague, Smallpox, Leprosy, SARS, Polio, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, or H1N1. If you have another widespread epidemic or pandemic you want to write about please send me an e-mail for permission.

The first section of your paper should be a detailed explanation of the origins of the disease, and how it spread. You also should trace the history of how it affected the human population for the time period in which it was prevalent. If the disease is still affecting large numbers of people (such as HIV/AIDS), you can pick a specific time period to discuss. What were the attempted medical and social interventions and preventions during that time period?
The second part of the paper should focus on the anthropological contexts of the disease. How would a medical anthropologist view this disease? You should select specific concepts from the course learning activities. For example, you could include a detailed discussion of how the disease fits into either the ecological/evolutionary model of disease, or the political-economy model of disease. You could discuss it from a global health viewpoint, or from a structural violence viewpoint. You could bring in concepts such as stigma, or social inequalities. Make sure to include several of the course concepts in your discussion, and cite the appropriate academic sources.
You should conclude your paper by responding to the question – if a medical anthropologist could go back in time to when this disease was prevalent, what could they contribute to the understanding of this disease? What specific contributions would they make? For example, if there was stigma surrounding the disease, what type of information about the stigma of this disease would an anthropologist research? What cultural factors relate to the rise and spread of this disease, etc.? How would a medical anthropologist be able to contribute to the understanding of this disease? In other words, your paper should not be a clinical or medical discussion of the disease, but an anthropological one using the concepts and theories you learned about in class.
Writing Guidelines
The final paper should be 5-7 pages in length, double-spaced with 12 point font, not including tables or the reference list.
The final paper should include a title page, an introduction, a thesis statement, a body, a conclusion and a reference list.
Readability
Your paper should use correct grammar, effective topic sentences and transitions, an organized and clear flow, limited use of quotations, and synthesis of information using your own words. It should incorporate references.
Citation and Reference Style
Your paper should be written in APA style (7th edition).
This assignment will use Turnitin to check for academic integrity. Please review the Turnitin information in your syllabus for more details.

Health Education Materials

You will be creating up to 2 COVID-19 related Health Educational Materials (a poster or brochure) for your community (one for children in middle school and one for elderly). Each poster or brochure = 5 instructored hours. No more than 10 hours in total. Your product must be for various target groups. For example, if you create one poster and one brochure for children, you will only get 5 hours. However, if you create one brochure for elderly and one poster for children, you will get 10 hours. If you create one brochure for children and one for elderly, you will get 10 hours since each brochure will contain different content and level of health literacy.
INSTRUCTION:
Read the “Health Literacy Guide: Making Client Resources Easy to Use and Understand” document. Pay greater attention on page 14-21- Health literacy guide(2017).pdf
Health literacy guide(2017).pdf – Alternative Formats
Find the brochure/poster templates which you like. There are some free templates on various websites. Google it. You can also use MS template or Powerpoint template which you can choose the layout as you see fit (e.g., 3 column layout).
Create a health educational material such as poster or brochure on COVID-19 info (e.g., facts about COVID-19, symptoms, preventive measures, vaccines, vaccination rate (12 years old and above), and what do to after vaccination).
If you want to do covid-19 related poster/brochure, think creatively and send a message to decrease the vaccine resistance.
You may choose another public health related topic for your materials. If you are not sure whether the topic is acceptable or not, consult your instructor.
Check readability level of each material. Flesch Kinkaid Grade level cannot exceed 6, and Flesch Reading Ease score should be above 60 (explained on page 17 of the attached document). For MS 365, this link explains how to check the readability- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/get-your-document-s-readability-and-level-statistics-85b4969e-e80a-4777-8dd3-f7fc3c8b3fd2
