EXAMPLE
Sample question:
What are some of the characteristics of ancient Egyptian civilization? How can comprehending the rise of ancient Egypt and other Nile Valley civilizations enrich our understanding of African American history?
Good response –
According to the textbook, the area known as Egypt was the “most densely populated part of the ancient world (author’s last name, p. 4).” It was one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Egypt was a very stratified society that included rulers and peasants. Pharaohs (the rulers) claimed godlike-powers. In fact, Egyptians created massive tombs for their pharohs and temples for their gods. They also created a method of writing using heiroglyphs, or picture writing. They learned to use the Nile flooding for irrigation, which allowed for agricultural abundance for their people. Their art consisted of sculptures of all sizes and paintings on the walls of tombs and temples. They perfected embalming that mummified bodies, placing pharaohs and the wealthy in elaborate caskets with many offerings for the afterlife. Their civilization lasted for 3,000 years.
After reading the section on Egypt and other ancient African civilizations, it became clear that Africans were very active in the ancient world. The textbook states that “Owing to its location, Egypt played virtually no role in the forced migration of Africans to the Americas (Carson, p. 5).” In fact, we read later in the chapter that most enslaved Africans were taken from West and Central Africa. However, learning about Egypt and other ancient African civilizations reminds us that African history did not begin with slavery. African Americans history, therefore, did not begin with slavery.

Should high-school students be required to take online classes before graduation?
The essay should be written on claims and arguments based on this question: Should high-school students be required to take online classes before graduation? First, create three claims you could make in response to the question–one of fact, one of value, and one of policy. Then choose one of those claims to take through the essay draft of at least 500 words. NOTE: THERE MUST BE 3 CLAIMS — POLICY, FACT, AND VALUE, AND THEN PICK ONE OF THEM TO WRITE THE ESSAY, IN MLA FORMAT.
EXAMPLES OF CLAIMS:
Claim of fact: the sun provides solar heat and light.
Claim of policy: we should implement more uses for solar energy due to its long-term low-cost use.
Claim of value: Solar energy is a great energy source.
What might be the benefits of silent cinema as opposed to sound?
Minimum of 250 words, double space, size 12 font
Recently, we began talking about sound film. Sound, though non-visual, greatly impacts cinematic style — elements of mise-en-scène are activated by sound or produce sound; we can see it affect editing style through cutting on sound, etc. (*Remember, the sound in the earlier films we watched would have been played live by musicians in the room. There was no assurance that the right — or even appropriate — music would be played.)
Having seen some examples of early sound film, like clips from The Jazz Singer and Dames, what did you think of this shift? Was it hard to watch the earlier silent films in comparison to the sound films? Were they easier to watch to your modern eye (or ear)? Or did you enjoy the change? Did you have to get used to not having synchronous sound? How does sound impact Citizen Kane? Can you imagine it as a silent film? What would be lost? What might be the benefits of silent cinema as opposed to sound?
