You will summarize, discuss, analyze and reflect on two essays

For your Reflection Paper Assignment, you will need to: (A) Write a clear, comprehensive short summary for each of the (2) texts, to present your understanding of the texts by providing a thorough overview/summary of the essay and its main points, and (B) include analysis (break it down/what is important, discuss) and (C) And, what is your own response (ideas/reflections/response) to the essay – here you are talking back to the texts ; For this Reflection paper, discuss the issues raised by the authors, and your overall analysis of the text (Clue to analysis: break it down/examine in closely).

Overall you will begin by doing a summary of the each of the essays (separately), analyze/discuss, and establish a position by sharing your response to the reading to include your thoughts, ideas, personal insights/reflections, what you learned, etc, based on the above readings.

Do NOT mix discussion of these two essays

For the essay, The Function of Artist in Society, you will need to discuss the (5) myths and the (2) related myths (positive and negative) and your summary and discussion. Then go into your analysis and reflection.
For the Howard Zinn essay, address what he feels the artists role in society is during times of strife, examples, and discuss the term Transcendence as it relates to his main point. Then go into your analysis and reflection.

Mental Health & The Law (Insanity)

You are the criminal justice advisor to the Governor of the State of Chaos. She is concerned that dangerous individuals might be released into society after being acquitted by reason of insanity. By the same token, she has compassion for the mentally ill. She wants you to advise her on a topic that she is not very familiar with.
What is the rationale behind the insanity defense; i.e., why are individuals not guilty, or not responsible, by reason of insanity? What are the legal definitions of insanity?
Should the defense be eliminated entirely? Should it be reformed? If so, how?
Is a verdict of Guilty But Mentally Ill a viable alternative? Does it make sense to find defendants not responsible for a crime but to punish them for it?
Did Ralph Tortorici receive justice? If not, who was responsible, and how should the case have been handled differently and by whom?
Guidelines
Using the material from the assigned text, address some of these questions in an initial post of about 250 words,

What makes one person more or less ethical than another? Where does that component of an individual’s character come from?

American Ethnic History

For step 3 of your reflexive research project you will explore social science sources relevant to your ethnicity, particularly the development of its American status.
What were some of the main events that affected individuals of your ethnicity over time? What were the outcomes of these events?
In what ways did these events contribute to your ethnicity’s status in America at the time that they occurred?
What are some lasting influences of these events on this ethnic group in American today?
How do these events shape your own conceptualization of your ethnicity?
If you chose to address more than one ethnicity, continue to compare and contrast.
Resources for this Step:
Our focus this step is Social Science. Review the disciplinary guide about social sceince methods and principles before choosing your sources.
You must use 4 – 5 documents that use social science methods, such as data analysis, ethnography (this is where oral history and social science overlap) to identify patterns that affect individuals and groups. You can choose from Working, National Archives, the US Census Bureau, and/or another creditable archive or database of records about work life, income, and policies that affected laborers.
You must use 1 secondary source, that is, a contemporary essay, article, or video on a particular issue or event. It can be from the course material or the library, or you can find one online. If the latter, check Evaluating Web Pages. to assure you are using a credible source.
Cite Natives and Strangers. You may refer to sections about a particular ethnicity, event, or issue.

The argument paper should begin with a one- to three-sentence statement of the main thesis. A thesis is an argument concerning an issue. It clearly states the author’s perception. Your paper should present your beliefs or conclusions related to the topic. It should include references from the text or one outside reading assigned by your instructor or both. The paper may also include material from other sources (please see rubric for guidance on this).
A Crash Course on Argument Papers
Select an issue or dilemma of interest.
Review the pertinent literature.
Decide on your perception; take a stance.
Articulate your perception in a thesis statement.
Summarize the issues; demonstrate an understanding of the controversy.
Defend/argue in favor of your perception using all resources available.
Finish with a strong summary statement that reinforces your thesis.
Proofread your work; use grammar/spellcheck functions.
Revise; submit final draft.
Your paper MUST be APA formatted throughout, including a reference page. (Insert collective sigh of frustration here, right?). Practice makes perfect, and this paper is not full of citations, so it will make for good practice. 🙂 Hint: Use the following sites for help, AND THEY HAVE SAMPLE PAPERS TO LOOK AT.

HOWEVER, I WILL NEED FOR THE WRITER TO USE AT LEAST ONE TEXTBOOK AS A SOURCE. THE TEXTBOOK IS ENTITLED ” CONCEPTS OF CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY by Harold E. Doweiko 10th Edition”. If the writer can dowload the free Kindle eBook app then you can read it for free on any device. Discuss local news coverage of alcohol- or drug-related incidences in your area( Now here the writer can add your own local news story and I will just change the city.
Conclude the essay by considering in what way your biblical worldview and/or biblical insights impact the way you consider use of substances, SUD’s, and what you’ve noticed in your local news.

impacts of climate change specifically on the biosphere

This assignment requires you to do some research on impacts of climate change specifically on the biosphere–this could be on vegetation or animals (including the human animal!) and write a summary of your research. I recommend using any of the websites below to begin your research:
NASA’s website (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to begin your research: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/.
NASA also has a site devoted an entire site to climate change impacts–here’s the link: http://climate.nasa.gov/
National Geographic
NY Times,
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
Exploratorium: http://www.exploratorium.edu/climate/biosphere/ or other reputable sources–ask me if you are unsure.
IMPORTANT: You may not choose an article that another student has already written about. Therefore you must look at the discussion posts that are already submitted BEFORE you choose your topic.
Okay, here are the detailed instructions:
Choose a specific article from your search results to read about and summarize to the class in your discussion posting. IMPORTANT: you cannot choose an item or article that has already been reported on by another student. This means you must check the discussion postings ahead of you (already submitted) before you report on that article.
Your summary must be in your own words. If your summary is plagiarized you will receive zero on the assignment. You may quote from the article using quotation marks. The summary must be a minimum of 400 words and you must include the title and url address of the article at the top of your summary. This is crucial so that other students can easily see the item/article you have chosen and not choose the same one. Please check out the assignment rubric for details.
When you create a thread for your discussion posting, put the title of your topic and url at the top of your postingso that other students can easily see the item/article you have chosen and not choose the same one. You must include the url/web address of your article at the top of your post.
You must include two sentences about how your article relates to information in the module or chapter readings on climate change and/or the biosphere. (-2 points if you do not relate to text reading in your summary).
Include an image from the article in your posting (sometimes there is more than one image in an article so you may choose to include a couple). If you need help with this please contact the CTC for assistance. If you do not insert the image into your posting so that we can see it as we are reading your summary, 2 points will be deducted (no image attachment or separate link to click–image must appear directly in your post). And you must include a description of what you image is about.
Comment on at least one other students’ post to earn your 5 commenting points. 5 sentences = 5 points

Life Without Rights for the Accused

Copy and paste the story below into a word document. Refer to the Bill of Rights (the document I attached below) to identify Johnny’s Civil Liberties as an accused person. Bold the sections where Johnny’s rights are violated and then tell me in parenthesis which amendment you’ve found it in. For example: Johnny was arrested for telling a friend that he was unhappy with the government. (1st amendment)
Johnny Q. Public dozed off to sleep while watching a crime show on TV. Suddenly there was a noise on his porch and then, “BAM!” Give men in police uniforms stood in his living room with guns pointed at him.
The captain shouted to the other officers, “You, go search the basement. You, search the garage. You, search the kitchen!”
“Wh-wh-where’s your search warrant?” asked Johnny nervously.
“We don’t need a warrant!” replied the police captain.
After searching his house, the captain announced, “Johnny Q. Public, you are under arrest.”
Johnny was booked and led to a prison cell. He wondered what he had been arrested for. “Guard, why have I been arrested?” Johnny asked each day. But the guards said they didn’t know.
Months went by. Finally Johnny was told that if he could post one million dollars bail, he could get out of jail until his trial. “I Don’t have that kind of money. Can I talk to an attorney?” He’d beg, but the answer was always, “No”.
A year passed and finally Johnny was transported from Virginia to Pennsylvania for trial. He found out that he was charged with shoplifting a t-shirt. As he entered the courtroom, he saw an empty jury box. He asked, “Where’s my jury?” He was told he couldn’t have a jury because judges were better at knowing when someone was guilty.
Then the district attorney said, “The prosecution calls Johnny Q. Public to the stand.” Johnny didn’t want to testify, but he was told he would be sent back to jail if he did not. Johnny put on the best defense he could. By some miracle, he was found not guilty.
A month later, Johnny was arrested again on the same charge. He had to prepare for another trail. The prosecution had new evidence this time. Johnny wanted to question the prosecution’s witnesses, but the judge would not let him.
When it was time for Johnny to present his case, Johnny said, “I’d like to call my neighbor to the stand. He knows that I was at home alone that night.” But the judge said, “Your neighbor didn’t want to get involved and so he would not agree to testify. There’s nothing we can do.”
Johnny was found guilty. The judge asked Johnny to stand while he read the sentence: “Johnny Q. Public, since this is your first offense you have been sentence to five years in a maximum security prison.” Johnny felt dizzy and sat down. He thought, “I wish there were something that could protect me from these abuses!”
