Reading Assignment & Discussion: Keith Haring’s Art

ntroduction
This week, we are beginning a unit on Visual Literacy and Argumentative Writing. What is visual literacy? It’s the ability to “read” visual images. It’s important to recognize that words–written and verbal text–aren’t the only way we, as humans, communicate with one another. We also use visual images to express ideas, concepts, and moods. From television and film to street signs and brand logos to painting and sculpture, we live in a world that is saturated with meaningful imagery.
In this unit, we are going to focus on learning how to “read” the images of a particular artist: Keith Haring. Please take a moment to watch the following short videos. They will introduce you to Keith Haring and to his work as a visual artist.
Video 1, Discover the King of Street Art [Content Warning: This video shows a couple paintings that Haring made for a sexual education campaign, which have graphic images (nudity/sexual content). Feel free to skip this video.]
Video 2, Intro to Keith Haring
As the videos mention, part of what made Keith Haring such a significant and unique artist is the fact that his career straddled two different spheres. He was an underground artist and an art school drop-out, deeply connected to 1980s graffiti culture. But he was also a celebrity and pop artist, and he created a number of high-profile commercial pieces. In many ways, his art attempted to bridge the gap between “high” and “low” art, or between what is considered “fine art”–the kind of art that you’d see in a gallery or museum–and street art, such as graffiti. These two approaches to art are usually worlds apart. People who belong to the official gallery world often discredit street art, viewing it as talentless vandalism. And people from the underground world were quick to criticize Haring for selling his work in galleries, in his Pop Shop, and for allowing corporate products, like Absolut Vodka, to use his images in large advertising campaigns. What’s interesting, though, is that Haring didn’t think these two worlds were necessarily mutually exclusive. He actually saw a commonality between commercial and street art insofar as both approaches emphasize communicating with a large, public audience. In the second video (posted above), Haring defends his commercial work by arguing that is wasn’t so much “selling-out” as it was an attempt to reach a mass audience. In other words, money wasn’t his primary motivation for doing the commercial work. Rather, he was still interested in the same thing he cared about when he did the subway drawings: producing work that a wide variety of people have access to. As an artist with a mass audience, one of his primary goals was to raise the public’s awareness about social causes he cared about, such as ending the racist apartheid regime in South Africa, nuclear disarmament, AIDS awareness and LGBTQ rights, and the crack epidemic.
Reading Assignment
Before you read and answer the Discussion prompt below, please read the following two essays on Keith Haring:**
An interview
Actions
that the artist Keith Haring did for RollingStone Magazine in 1989 (1 year before he passed away)
An essay on the political nature of Keith Haring’s paintings, “The Endless Political Line” by Dieter Buchhart
Actions
(you may need to download this essay because the preview quality isn’t great on Canvas)
**It’s important that you read both of these essays carefully because you will need to quote them in your upcoming Argumentative Essay Assignment.
Discussion Prompt
In this Discussion, we’re going to practice analyzing the imagery in Keith Haring’s art. Your upcoming Argumentative Essay Assignment will be based on a question very similar to this week’s Discussion prompt, so the more effort you put into your post and replies, the easier it will be to compose your essay when the time comes.
Below, you’ll see four images of paintings by Keith Haring (the first one is actually an image of one his chalk subway drawings). They are the same four paintings that I posted in this week’s lecture. Please select ONE of the paintings to write about for this week’s post. Your post should be at least 200 words long, and in your post, you should:
State which painting you’re going to analyze
Describe the imagery in the painting (including the kinds of things that Haring represents but also how you perceive his STYLE. In order to describe his style, you might consider his use of color, the width of his lines, the types of shapes he uses, how different elements are arranged spatially, and the mood or energy that the painting gives off.) The Elements of Art
Actions
and the Principles of Design
Actions
handouts list useful vocabulary for describing imagery in art. Review both of these handouts and try to use some of the vocabulary in your description of Haring’s painting.
Analyze how the imagery communicates a social message (In other words, what big message is Haring trying to send? What cause is he fighting for? How does he use images like words to communicate in a way that has mass appeal?)

Plan to Change Behaviour

In this second phase of the assignment, use learning principles (from chapter 6) to PLAN a technique that you will later use to change your behaviour.
Use the learning principles from chapter 6 to plan a technique to change the behaviour that you observed earlier this term.
Think about the precursors (what happens before you engage in the behaviour or the “antecedents”) and the outcomes of the behaviour (what happens after you engage in the behaviour or “consequences”).
Plan on using tangible- real!- reinforcements and/or punishments rather than just willpower to make the change in your behaviour. These are the guts of a successful behaviour modification program.
Be very specific about what types of behaviour will “count” and what level will be required before a reward or punishment will occur. For example, if your behaviour is nail-biting, will you need to eliminate biting before you get your reward? Only do 5 bites per day? What happens if you do more than 5 bites? Also make sure that you can keep track of the behaviour as well as the number of rewards or punishments.
Please use the specific comments returned to you with the first observation phase of the assignment to guide your design. Keep in mind that you may need to collect new information before you can design the next phase if I thought you needed more specific ideas about what factors might be controlling the behaviour.

Focused SOAP Note and Patient Case Presentation

TO PREPARE
Review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the insights they provide about assessing, diagnosing, and treating schizophrenia spectrum, other psychotic, and medication-induced movement disorders.
Review the Focused SOAP Note template, which you will use to complete this Assignment. There is also a Focused SOAP Note Exemplar provided as a guide for Assignment expectations.
Review the video, Case Study: Sherman Tremaine. You will use this case as the basis of this Assignment. In this video, a Walden faculty member is assessing a mock patient. The patient will be represented onscreen as an avatar.
Consider what history would be necessary to collect from this patient.
Consider what interview questions you would need to ask this patient.
The Assignment
Develop a focused SOAP note, including your differential diagnosis and critical-thinking process to formulate a primary diagnosis. Incorporate the following into your responses in the template:
Subjective: What details did the patient provide regarding their chief complaint and symptomology to derive your differential diagnosis? What is the duration and severity of their symptoms? How are their symptoms impacting their functioning in life?
Objective: What observations did you make during the psychiatric assessment?
Assessment: Discuss the patient’s mental status examination results. What were your differential diagnoses? Provide a minimum of three possible diagnoses with supporting evidence, and list them in order from highest priority to lowest priority. Compare the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for each differential diagnosis and explain what DSM-5 criteria rules out the differential diagnosis to find an accurate diagnosis. Explain the critical-thinking process that led you to the primary diagnosis you selected. Include pertinent positives and pertinent negatives for the specific patient case.
Plan: What is your plan for psychotherapy? What is your plan for treatment and management, including alternative therapies? Include pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments, alternative therapies, and follow-up parameters, as well as a rationale for this treatment and management plan. Also incorporate one health promotion activity and one patient education strategy.
Reflection notes: What would you do differently with this patient if you could conduct the session again? Discuss what your next intervention would be if you were able to follow up with this patient. Also include in your reflection a discussion related to legal/ethical considerations (demonstrate critical thinking beyond confidentiality and consent for treatment!), health promotion, and disease prevention, taking into consideration patient factors (such as age, ethnic group, etc.), PMH, and other risk factors (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural background, etc.).
Provide at least three evidence-based, peer-reviewed journal articles or evidenced-based guidelines that relate to this case to support your diagnostics and differential diagnoses. Be sure they are current (no more than 5 years old).

SEPSIS Management- Evidence based practice-Nursing Capstone Project

Introduction to the Problem (PICOT Question; developed in the Week 1 assignment).
Literature Review and Critique (developed in the Week 2 assignment).
Theoretical Framework (developed in the Week 3 assignment).
Methodology (developed in the Week 4 assignment).
In the methodology section, which concludes your proposal,
Clearly identify the design, setting, subject, sample, variables and instruments, and any relevant statistics.
Conclude by specifying what you expect to find, addressing the question of what outcome you can support with the evidence gathered from your facility and your research.
I created a new PICOT question from the one that is in the paper. My new question is in a word document by itself.
The sepsis info PDF file is information that I recieved from my work. CommonSpirit Health that they had typed up for us employees. So I am not sure if you want to utilize that or not and how you would site it.
