Pre-Arrest Interventions (CJA 456)

Respond to Cindy and April’s discussion post, with 150 words each.

Research and explain 2 examples of pre-arrest diversion programs in your community.
What are the major goals and objectives of these pre-arrest diversion programs?
How do pre-arrest diversion programs impact courts, corrections, and police-community relations?

(Cindy Eldridge)
Good Evening Class
Pre-arrest diversion program, he alternative for a criminal conviction. These program types are used to have cases dismissed and records sealed. Examples of pre-arrests diversion programs are drug and alcohol programs, LEAD programs and an MDP program. Resources are conserved when it comes to diversion programs that are well designed.
The drug and alcohol program are mainly for offenders who have committed drug and alcohol offenses for the first time and the charges are misdemeanors. Those individuals could not have been enrolled in any other diversion programs prior to this one and if the offender completes the diversion program the charges could be dropped. The MDP program (Misdemeanor Diversion Program) provides services for those offenders who are age 18 to 26 years of age and are first time misdemeanants. In lieu of arrest, referrals for this program is made. MDP is a 90 day program and if the offender completes the program successfully then their case will be closed and they will not have a criminal review. North Carolina also has a law enforcement assisted diversion program. This is a program for offenders of alcohol and sex offenses.
Diversion programs impact law enforcement because they allow the officers ways to identify criminal activity patterns also providing security in high crime area’s, skills in advanced decision making and crime prevention methods that will benefit all those involved.

(April S Graves)
Two examples of pre-arrest diversion programs in Baltimore City are, Center for Children’s Law and Policy and another is MONSE (Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement). These are two programs which focuses on restorative and transformative justice, as well as evidence-based or evidence-informed services (MONSE, 2022). Completing assessments on youth which information is gathered by data analysis or evidence from youth that have actually been in trouble with law enforcement. These assessments help make plans within the programs to help youth make better decisions after they have been in trouble before or finds ways to prevent other youth from entering into the juvenile justice system altogether.
The major goals and objectives of these pre-arrest diversion programs is to decrease the number of juveniles offenders from re-entering the juvenile system and help them transform their lives to have a brighter and healthier live presently and in their future. They respond to youth by assessing their needs along with their families and involve others within the community by getting everyone to engage in helping the youth make good decisions that will help them be successful. More African American youth have run ins with law enforcement than other races and have the highest crime rates.
There will be a positive impact on courts, corrections, and police-community relations if/when there is a decrease in the criminal activity by youth. There is a decrease in cost, population in facilities, and fewer encounters with law enforcement. Coming up with alternatives for youth to engage in positive things around their community will encourage them to think about their future and possibly choose not to commit crimes.

Constructing a Visual Aid

Objective:

Visual aids are an essential part of the speech delivery process. This is how you communicate and share the visuals and ideas your audience needs to hear and respond to. Remember, the goal of the visual aid is NOT to retype your speech outline. The goal of the visual aid is to provide concrete visual reminders or representations of what the speaker is presenting. There are a lot of different considerations about creating visual aids–what images to use, how much text to use, etc. This discussion provides a place to crowdsource some ideas and remind each other how to build our visual aids best!

Research:

Take some time and research how to create visual aids for speeches. It is essential to include the note that this is for speech visual aids–specifically presentation slides. You can also research slide decks for presentations, as that will come up with different responses.

Respond:

Now that you have researched visual aids, make a list five to 10 reminders on creating good visual aids. You can even set it up similar to this Twitter thread.

Seriously, read the thread. It’s good.

Be sure to include an APA citation for your source material–we do not need any plagiarism on here!

HIS 200 Writing Plan Progress Check 2 Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
Throughout Modules One and Two, you have been guided through beginning your Project 1: Writing Plan assignment, which you will continue to work on in Modules Three and Four and formally submit for completion at the end of Module Four of the course. This progress check assignment provides you with an important opportunity to get valuable instructor feedback on the progress you are making and to ensure you are on the right track for your later submission.

Prompt
Module Two: Approaches to History, continued, has explored how historians select search terms to locate secondary sources that help them find answers to their research question. Return to your submission for Progress Check 1 and expand upon your event’s historical significance, describe two secondary sources you could use to research your event (along with search terms you used to locate those sources), and support your research question with secondary and primary sources.

Specifically, in this assignment, you will submit the following elements of your Project 1: Writing Plan for review by your instructor:

In Module Two: Approaches to History, continued, learning block 2-3 (page 3), you completed the following element:

Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?
Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?
Please note that the numbering included above directly aligns with the numbering of these elements as they are presented in the Project 1 Guidelines and Rubric. You will ultimately also need to describe primary sources that you could use to research your event as well as the audience and message for your historical analysis essay, but you do not need to do so in this submission. You will be prompted to build upon this progress check submission to prepare your final writing plan for submission in Module Four.

What to Submit
The Writing Plan Progress Check 2 must be submitted as a 1-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Follow the formatting of the example included in Module Two: Approaches to History, continued, learning block 2-3 (page 3), and include identifying information (name, course code and title, assignment title, name of university, and date) as well as section headings (topic, research question, search terms and sources) as appropriate.
