Diane Arbus: Cruel, or Kind?

Diane Arbus: Cruel, or Kind?

Diane Arbus was a photographer who went from (in her early career) taking pictures of glamorous models for fashion magazines to taking pictures of “freaks” later in her career (little people, giants, transvestites, the mentally disabled.) This is the term she used, not mine. She committed suicide in 1971.

Write a minimum of six paragraphs (6-7 sentences each) telling me if you think that she was “making ambassadors” of the “freaks” that she photographed, or if she was being mean and exploitative. She said that she was “shining a light on people that society looks past.” Google her work, and look at the attached Power Point presentation. Does her work look kind, or cruel? Choose at least three of her photographs (with titles in italics and dates) to support your thesis.

Six paragraphs minimum (6-7 sentences per paragraph), Times New Roman, 12 point, black, double spaced. Be sure to attach scholarly sources as links at the bottom of your paper.

Why should relationships — whether they be romantic, familial, social, professional, or academic – be strengthened?

In this essay, students will identify the existing discourse surrounding our research question (a topic to be determined in our first week of class).
More specifically, we need to get a working definition of our topic, one that comes from experts and scholars. As such, this literature review will focus on conducting research to discover what definitions currently exist for our selected topic.
The primary goal of a literature review is to do precisely what the name states: Review the literature on the subject. This means you need to go out and discover source material related to our paper. The overall goal here will be to eventually identify what you consider to be an issue-at-hand related to our topic, or problem that must be solved by the research, or a unifying principle between the sources.
How you approach this topic is up to you! You must, however, include at least two original sources you’ve discovered, related to your own research on the subject. These sources should be primary or secondary sources, preferably discovered through one of the online databases of scholarly peer reviewed journal articles.
This is designed to be an informative essay; rather than persuade the audience to follow a course of action to solve the problem, you will determine the current existing conversation on the subject, and use that to accurately identify the issue-at-hand. The key here is to find expert thoughts on the subject, rather than simply find common thoughts. As often as possible, it’s best to avoid personal insight except to explain the significance of expert opinions on the subject matter. This doesn’t mean that you can’t provide an opinion here: it simply means that your opinion is related to how the source material is useful in understanding the subject. Again, the goal here is to demonstrate your understanding of the existing discourse community; we’re not here to argue a point yet, but rather to establish a base problem that needs to be addressed,In this essay, students will identify the existing discourse surrounding our research question (a topic to be determined in our first week of class).

Sonny Blue

In a 2 to 3-page essay, discuss whether Sonny will likely be able to resist his addiction to heroin in the future or if it is likely he will succumb to his heroin addiction. Be sure to use introduction and conclusion strategies discussed in the video and PPT on “How to Write a Literary Analysis.” State a clear thesis statement that you can prove with textual analysis. (Follow the strategies in the video and PPT on “How to Write a Thesis Statement.”) Give at least two reasons for your position and support those reasons with textual analysis. Be sure your conclusion is NOT a summary of your argument. Instead, assume you have proven your argument and state why it should matter to readers living in 2022. This is the place where you may make a personal connection or connect back to the personal connection you may have made in your introduction. Don’t forget to practice your proofreading skills. Be sure your essay is typed and double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12. The beginning sentence of each paragraph should be indented by 1 Tab space (or 5 spaces). Be sure your essay has a title. Be sure your essay has page numbers. Also, be sure to use the TIEIA format discussed in the TIEIA video when bringing in textual material from the story as evidence to support your points.

6.1 [Critical Response Assignments] Critical Response 6

This is the first Critical Response where you will be asked to construct an argument. This will require rigorous planning and forethought before you begin to write. Focus on the readings from Venturi and Scott Brown, paying particular attention to the theme of architecture’s desire to communicate with people, and the ambiguous—and sometimes playful—interpretations that occur. Read each carefully and synthesize them with concern for that theme. Then develop your own thesis and construct an argument based on your critical reading. The position you argue should be clear, and should unfold throughout your writing. Properly cite your sources.
Format
2 pages:
At top: Your Name, Critical Response #, LA.429.OL and Date, Title
Rest of page: Your writing and citations (writing limited to this one page)
Works Cited, and any images you find appropriate to include (also cited)

Title Sequences: Research Paper

This paper is expected to be 6 pages or longer, typed, and double-spaced (and proofread before you upload them).
It is an exercise in technical analysis as well as in close reading.

Title Sequences: Research Paper
This paper should show your grasp of the pivotal concepts and historical developments in film title design. Drawing on the kind of analysis you did for the midterm, you now go beyond close readings to develop an argument. Please focus on at least three title sequences, at least two of which have not already been part of our class screenings or your prior assignments in this class. You should use a minimum of three references from the readings (they are mostly quite short); additional sources are good, and a majority of your referenced articles or book chapters must be from scholarly journals or books, not from newspapers or magazines. The format of this research paper is like that of any other persuasive essay:
1. You must have a thesis (an argument you can state in one sentence, usually at the end of
your first paragraph after you state your topic) in your paper.
2. Generally, it is a good idea to state your topic in a few sentences and then state your thesis,
as the last sentence of your first paragraph.
3. Feel free to contact me at any point in the composition process to discuss your ideas, your
clips, your stills, your sources, and your argument.
4. Write clear, concise, reader-friendly prose. Write to be understood.

Your essay should have a title that describes specifically what your paper is about. If your title is
overly general, it means you do not have a topic or a thesis. It may be a good idea to have the titles of the films you’re discussing in your essay title, but it also needs to announce your approach to them, your angle on them. Do not summarize the texts or the title sequences you are discussing.

You may assume that your reader has read the reference material carefully and is familiar with title sequences. Develop an outline before you start writing. Be coherent and concise. Remember to back up your points with concrete references to the film or text and quotations from it. Integrate quotations into your paper: after citing, translate each quote into your own words and say what it means for your argument. Incorporate stills from the sequences you discuss where it is appropriate.

Please proofread your paper carefully. Double-space your paper. Do not refer to lectures or class discussions, but imagine you are writing for a general, informed audience. If your paper were posted on a webpage, anyone interested in film & media culture should be able to follow your argument. Use the present tense when discussing a text or film; make sure that nouns and pronouns agree in number (a singular noun goes with a singular pronoun; a plural noun goes with a plural pronoun); give the name of the director and the year of release of any film being discussed, and always give information about who is responsible for the main title design. Underline or italicize titles of films and books. Put citations in quotation marks, and properly attribute your sources. Use a 12 point font, and number your pages. Make sure your paragraphs have strong transitions between them that tell your reader how you are developing your argument. Avoid listing observations instead of guiding the reader through an argument. Make sure your paragraphs are in themselves developed clearly. It is acceptable to use “I” or “my” as in “I would argue” or “in my view,” but do not personalize your argument (“When I saw the film I felt that . . .”). You’re writing a persuasive essay directed at an audience, not an autobiography.

Choose a minimum of three references from the readings (I will upload them)

Module 3 Discussion 3: WOW! Lesson

WOW! Lesson
While reading the eText and explorations, as well as watching the video clips in this module, write down several WOW “I didn’t know that” or “That’s amazing!” facts.
Select one WOW! fact that you noted and write at least 3 critical thinking** questions about this topic. **Critical thinking questions are questions that require you to analyze information and form a judgment. Questions such as “When was X born?” are not critical thinking questions.
Research and find the answers to your WOW! fact questions. If you can’t find a definitive answer to a question, look for interesting related topics and list them as your answer.
Use your questions and answers to build a WOW! lesson for your classmates (as described below). This may be the only thing your classmates learn about your WOW! fact, and you are the teacher, so please be thorough!
Formatting
At the top of your discussion post, state the WOW! fact (as a quote or paraphrase) followed by an in-text citation of your fact’s source. Use in-text citation (not bibliographic citation) in APA, MLA, or Chicago Style format.
Write a paragraph (3–5 sentences in addition to your quote or paraphrased information) about why that information excited you or why you found it interesting.
Below the paragraph, list each WOW! fact question followed immediately by your researched answer of at least a paragraph in length (3 sentences minimum). Each answer should also include an in-text citation or note in APA, MLA or Chicago Style format. (Note: this is a total of at least 4 in-text citations in your post and quotations should be used minimally in your answers or not at all).
Include a bibliographic list (References, Works Cited, or Bibliography as appropriate) for all the sources you used for research. Remember these should be appropriate research resources—no tertiary sources.
WOW Examples

attached below will be the rubric and an example paper!
