Understanding Cultural Diversity — Western Shoshone Land Rights

TASK

Assignment Instructions:

This assignment should be about two pages long (or about 1,000 words) if you thoroughly answer all the questions. Please be sure that you keep grammar and writing rules in mind as you work. Please upload the assignment to Canvas in a .doc or .docx only. DO NOT PASTE YOUR RESPONSE INTO THE COMMENTS.

Watch the movie, Our Land, Our Life: The Struggle for Western Shoshone Land Rights.

Our Land, Our Life (25 minutes)
“Our Land, Our Life” presents the struggle of Carrie and Mary Dann, two Western Shoshone elders, to address the threat mining development poses to the sacred and environmentally sensitive lands of Crescent Valley, Nevada.

Do the following actives and answer the bolded questions.

Define material culture and symbolic culture as explained in course content.
Define cultural diffusion and global culture. You will have to research these terms on your own.

Go to the University of Arizona’s Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program’s page on their work with the Western Shoshone and skim the PDF provided for more background on the case.

Read over the purpose of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Follow the link on one of its main functions, the “early-warning procedure” and follow the link on its warning to the United States (E means the report is in English). CERD issued a warning to the United States in April of 2006 to stop plans to transfer Western Shoshone lands to multinational mining and energy developers and stop imposing grazing and other fees on the Western Shoshone people while using ancestral lands. CERD reiterated the demand in 2008, requiring the U.S. to report on their response. (If the early warning link is broken, here is a direct link to the CERD April 2006 Early Warning Decision to the US.)

Read through section B. “Concerns” in that document.
Why is the United Nations concerned with the U.S.’s treatment of the Western Shoshone?

In the U.S. State Department’s response to CERD in 2013, the U.S. wrote two paragraphs (see items 178 and 179 in its report to CERD). Essentially, the U.S. claimed that in September 2012 it completed payment totaling $45 million to 5,362 Western Shoshone individuals, thereby legally (according to US law) completing its obligation regarding the Treaty of Ruby Valley. The report stated, “The United States believes that it should not interfere in the internal dispute among the Western Shoshone, and that they have been properly compensated for the land at issue.”

This issue illustrates a variety of examples of many of the concepts we have been discussing. Think about the issue from the perspective of each of the cultures involved. Briefly, describe and analyze the differences in the symbolic culture (different interpretations of the land and ownership) and material culture (economic systems) you see in this issue. Which culture has more power to have their definitions of reality prevail and why?

How does this issue reflect difficulties in preserving cultural diversity globally?

Reaction Paper: Looting & Whose Streets

This reaction paper must be typed and be 2 pages.

1. The first part of the paper should summarize the main points of the Looting PDF.

2. In the second half of the paper, use the reading to craft a response to the documentary. For example, your reaction can include (but is not limited to) an analysis of the parallels/incongruencies between the reading and the documentary.

Reminders:

Papers that do not meet the page minimum requirement will receive a zero. Note: Pay attention to the page limit of each reaction paper. It is not always the same.
Your reaction paper should be double-spaced, 12-point font.
Please limit your header to your first and last name. Don’t waste lines writing out the date, class, assignment name, professor name, etc. Instead, use those lines to respond to the prompt(s).
Be concise in your writing. Don’t explain things that aren’t in the prompts. Keep your answer focused on the
prompts.

When there are multiple parts (listed as 1, 2, 3, etc.), separate your response to each part by paragraphs. Don’t skip extra lines when making a new paragraph. Push enter one time, indent the new section, and start typing your response to the next part. Following this format will ensure that you focus your answers directly on each part of the prompt, making it easier to identify each piece.
All parts are important! Please ensure that you adequately address all parts of the prompt.

Reflection of lesson taught using differentiation

As you are in your YLI, you will be teaching a variety of lessons for a variety of your courses. For this assignment, you will teach a lesson to either a small group (5 or more students) or the full class. In your lesson plan, you will have predetermined strategies in place to demonstrate differentiation strategies. This can also be a collection of differentiation that you have used in multiple lessons.. For this assignment, you will submit a two-page reflection containing the following:

A detailed description of the differentiation strategies used (be specific)
Why you chose these strategies
How successful these strategies were with your students
What you might do differently in the future for differentiation and why?

I am teaching 1st graders and you can use any differentiation strategies for a lesson on subtraction of tens. I have no IEP’s or ELL’s. I do have 3 struggling readers, so any suggestions for differentiation would great to add into this reflection paper. I used ten sticks and ones cubes, 100’s chart and counters for manipulatives. I also pre recorded more rigorous math lessons for my students who grasped the concept fairly quickly and was able to complete the assignment correctly.
