DISCUSSION GEOMETRY

Now that you have had a
chance to glance through the Disability History Timeline from the link above and
read about some of the different events important in the history of people with
disabilities, it is time to do some processing. How does the information impact
us and how do we react to it? Discussion Geometry provides a simple way to do
this and helps us organize our ideas and responses to the Disability History
Timeline.

Reflect on how a critical reader examines a text with a healthy skepticism. Drawing upon the strategies discussed in Chapter 1, what questions might be most important to ask when reading an argumentative text? Identify a specific genre of argumentative writing (such as an editorial, movie review, or position paper) and explain some of the questions you should ask as a critical reader. Answer in 4-6 sentences.

In this assignment, you will create a Rhetorical Analysis of a review of a film, show, or series. Specifically, you will answer several questions and post your answers in the Module Two Discussion Forum. In the same Discussion Forum, you will also respond to another students post. It is time now to apply what you are learning about writing and research from our text.

Answer the following questions:

2. Locate an in-depth review of a film, TV show, or online series (such as Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu shows) that you would like to analyze. Most news organizations and magazines regularly feature reviews in the Entertainment section of their publications. You can also search Huffington Post, Vox, The Atlantic, and a number of other online publications that will include film and tv reviews. An in-depth review will include a detailed analysis of the film or show with insights and opinions, so avoid a simple, standard review you might find on Rotten Tomatoes, and instead search for a review that operates more as an article. What information does this review include, and what features cue you in to the fact that this is a review of a film, show, or series? Paste the link at the beginning of your paragraph.
Answer in one paragraph that includes 4-6 sentences

3. Who would be the typical reader, and does the reader need any special knowledge, vocabulary, or background to understand this review?
Answer in 3-5 sentences

4. What is the writers goal in this review, and what other information does the writer include that suggests their purpose in writing this review?
Answer in 3-5 sentences

5. How would you describe the reviewers voice? How does the voice reflect both the subject matter and the reasons someone would want to watch this film or show?
Answer in 3-5 sentences

As you can see, all these questions are related to the papers we have already written; you may use the earlier work in the final. For example, we have all examined noir already and your previous work on it will supply the beginning of several of these papers.
In a well-organized essay of 8-12 pages (double-spaced, including a works cited page), answer ONE of the following:
1) What is hardboiled literature? What is hardboiled about Dashiell Hammett? Describe the hardboiled universe of The Maltese Falcon. The Maltese Falcon is also called the first film noir. Why? What is film noir? How does it relate to the term pulp fiction? What other Hammett novels were adapted into films? Discuss film noir in relation to the Falcon and at least TWO other noirs or neo-noirs (Pulp Fiction, Sin City, Se7en, L.A. Confidential).
2) James M. Cains novels have had an enormous impact on the development of film noir. Three of his novels became famous noirs: Double Indemnity (1944), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) and (1981), and Mildred Pierce (1945). What does Cains fiction supply to the world of noir? What does he write about? Why have his books been so controversial and popular? See another Cain adaptationbesides The Postmanand compare it to its source novel and the world of The Postman.
3) Quentin Tarantinos Pulp Fiction (1994) is an experimental film in terms of its break with linear narration but at the same time it is rooted in classic hardboiled characters and plots from pulp fiction and film noir. What is pulp fiction? What is film noir? What is postmodernism? Describe the film as a neo-noir and discuss its relationship to noir classics such as The Maltese Falcon. Discuss at least two other noirs or neo-noirs (Reservoir Dogs, Sin City, Se7en) as postmodern noirs.

4) Write a history of the American gangster film from Griffiths The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912) to Brian De Palmas Scarface (1983). You must cover the big three of the early 30s (Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, and Scarface) and discuss the films in relation to real crime figures, film genre, and the Hays Code. You should consider the careers of important actors (Cagney, Robinson, Muni) and directors (Hawks, Wellman).

Option 1 History Cause and Effect essay based on World war 2

OPTION #1
Write a cause and effect essay discussing a historical event. Be sure to focus on either the cause or the effect of the event. Also, try to focus your paper on a specific event. For example, instead of writing about the Second World War, you should focus on a moment in that war, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor. Remember to be specific and detailed in your writing. Some things you might want to think about:
What was the causal chain that led to the event?
What were the ramifications of the event? How is the world different because of it?
