Analytical Questions on Neither the Luck Nor the Charm
Although this assignment is called an “essay” you can simply answer the questions individually in the order they are asked. You don’t have to pull it altogether in a formal essay format.
1 Who was John Sullivan generally speaking? Where was he from? What do we know about his family? What was his profession other than being a military leader and general?
2 What role did he play during the Revolutionary War? Mention particularly the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, the Battle of Rhode Island, and the Iroquois Campaign and you can add anything else you think was significant.
3 What kind of a person was John Sullivan? What were his strengths and his weaknesses, his accomplishments and his failures? What is your personal impression or assessment of him? Explain.
4 Do you think that history has treated John Sullivan fairly? Let’s be honest: Sullivan County is named after him and yet ask almost anyone in Sullivan County who John Sullivan was and they will stare at you blankly. (If you are in Sullivan County, just for fun try asking this question and see what kind of a response you get.)
5 What did you think of the book? Why do you think it was titled “Neither the Luck Nor the Charm”? What does the author think of John Sullivan and does he present us with an objective portrait of the man? Do be honest in expressing your real opinion of the book and the experience of reading it

Essay:The Hermeneutic (Revision)

Essay #1: The Hermeneutic (Revision)
If you have a revision for Essay #1, you should submit it here following these guidelines:
Pick at least one paragraph from your essay and revise it to make it “perfect”
This may include grammar issues, but simply fixing grammar mistakes is not revision; that’s editing
To effectively revise your essay, start with the word “revise.” To revise is to “see again,” to revisit, to re-visualize, to re-imagine your essay (or paragraph, in this case). Revising may mean completely restructuring your essay/paragraph, adding whole chunks of analysis, or even removing troublesome passages that perhaps were off-topic or irrelevant.
In general, what I’ve observed while reading through all of the essay submissions this semester (Spring 2021) is a need for more in-depth textual analysis. Given that our foundational text (“The Task of the Translator”) tells us that a text’s mode affects that text’s meaning, it is critical that we closely examine how our cited texts’ modes contribute to meaning, too.
In addition, add a paragraph (250 words) reflection explaining what you changed, why you changed it, and how you will avoid the same sorts of pitfalls in the future. In other words, what skills or strategies have you developed as a result of completing your revision?
