Using the concepts learned through the readings and interactive lecture pages, select a social issue or ethical dilemma in the news. Find two recent news articles from two different types of media sources on the issue. In your introduction, for both of your examples, be sure to carefully identify what types of sources you are analyzing (news story, editorial, commentary), the name of the media company, and the date and author. Then, answer the following questions:
1. What assumptions do you make about these articles before reading them? How is your mind already “at work”?
2. What is the main claim and/or point of view expressed (if there is one) by the article? Is the article objectively written? Be careful here – if the article is an editorial opinion, note that the purpose of this type of article is very different from that of a news story. If you are analyzing an editorial, is the argument presented logically?
3. Apply evaluative criteria to your analysis. Is there a particular audience that the article is targeting? Is there an appeal to sensationalism? Can you discern a vested ideological perspective?
4. What is a peer-reviewed source? What peer-reviewed sources did you find that helped in thinking critically about your issue.

Option #2: Contemporary Examples of Media Bias and Propaganda
Directions:
The required readings this week include a variety of recent examples of media bias and propaganda. Using these required readings, address the following prompts and questions:
Compare and contrast the propaganda and bias emerging from jihadist fighters (Klausen, 2015) and the Chinese state (King, Pan, Roberts, 2017).
What arguments does Schiffrin (2017) make about social media and democracy?
After reading these articles, what recommendations would you make regarding the dissemination of propaganda through popular or social media?

II. Outline and Resources Due Tuesday June 22nd
You must turn in an outline and an annotated bibliography
for your final Research project.
Use either an Alphanumeric Outline, a Decimal Outline, or a
sentence hierarchical outline.
The list of resources you expect to use includes website,
books, and films. This should be in the form of an Annotated Bibliography and
include at least 5-7 references that are applicable to your chosen topic. At
least one of your references should come from a peer reviewed academic journal
or website.
FINAL PROJECT: Your assignment is to write a 57-page
research paper (proper APA citation is required) on a specific film (Carrie
1976). Final Paper – you are to turn in the finished paper. Tuesday
July 13th
In your term paper, you should present information about the
making of the movie, about its success at the box office, about awards it was
nominated for and/or received. Also present a sampling of the critical reaction
to the film, from both the time of its release and later. Finally, you should
watch the film and react to it. Do not summarize the plot. Assume that I have
already seen the film. In addition, write about how this director used the
following in these films: Editing (montage), Sound and Music, Cinematography,
Special Camera Work (steady cam, handheld, optical effects), Special Effects
(this can include stunt work).
III. Final Paper – Due Tuesday July 13th
Submission of the final paper 57-page research paper and
its bibliography. (The bibliography does not need to be annotated for the final
paper.) The coversheet, bibliography, and any graphs or images, or appendix
does not count toward paper length. The
body of the paper should have a one-inch margin on all four sides, be
doubled-space, and use a standard font style (Times New Roman 12 or Calibri
11).

In this section of chapter 6, Duiker discusses key elements of the “home front” by briefly looking at the Soviet Union, the United States, and Japan, respectively.
