economics

President Bill Clinton said that it was our job to convince people that “democracy and free markets can give all people the opportunity to live out their dreams.” President Bush argued something similar at the Free Trade of the America’s summit in Quebec City in 2001: “We have a great vision before us: a fully democratic hemisphere, bound together by good will and free trade. That is a tall order. It is also the chance of a lifetime. And it is the responsibility we share.” Presidents (and the World Trade Organization, the International Fund, and the World Bank), Democrat and Republican, since Carter in the 1970s have argued that we need to have Free Markets and Free Trade. This will lead to a better world, it will reduce poverty, and develop poorer nations. Based on the documentaries you watched and the readings in section 1. What do you think of this? Do free markets deliver the goods as these presidents claim it will?
Write a 5-page paper where you engage this discussion. First state the case for free trade and free markets. Assess the claims based on the readings by Mike Davis, Ha-Joon Chang, and the documentaries. Is free trade conducive to development in your view? That is to say, do you think that it is a good policy to be adopted by a government trying to generate economic development in their country?

Course Second Half – Microeconomic Analysis:

Complete
the following essay: double-spaced, as a single MS-Word or rich text
format document file; length of five (5) full pages, and without
references listed. This is a critical thinking & analytical
assignment which should be written exclusively in your own words &
perspective. Citations of sources is not necessary. The most
important core of this paper, is your own informed interpretation of the
chapter topic – from the basis of the micro economic course content
throughout the rest of the textbook…
Summary or narrative
description is valued far less than substantive economic analysis and
supportive argument. There is a great deal of material to draw upon
when presenting your analysis of micro economic concepts regarding the
chapter that you have chosen.

TOPIC from our course that we have gone through: “THE MODEL OF PURE COMPETITION”, “PURE COMPETITION & MONOPOLISTIC COMPETITION”, “OLIGOPOLY” and, “THE RESOURCE MARKET”.
The assigned topic is:
*** Select one of the applied policy text chapters which we did not cover, # 19 – 26 (Energy, Public Finance, Anti-trust, Agriculture, Poverty, Health Care, Immigration, or International Trade)
to read & study very carefully. See the final Module for the
narrated lecture summary to help you gain more familiarity with your
chosen subject.
(1) Bring this topic to
life with relevance & importance to society, micro analysis, and
your own insight / perspective. Why does this chapter matter and how
can the tools learned in the course be meaningfully applied?
(2) Then present an analysis
(rather than a chapter summary) which uses each paragraph to apply as
many micro-economic principles & concepts from the course as
possible. Try to analyze their relevance to your chapter topic.
Economic analysis will be graded far higher than narrative description
or summary!
(3) Finally illustrate your topic by * analyzing a current or recent micro event [ during this quarter ] which is relevant to the chapter.
This may be through a firm, market, or government policy. You can
check the news or search in the Library for prospective relevant &
supportive examples.
NOTE: LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING.

Business Law DB

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
Q1. Some states give consumers the right to cancel certain contracts for any reason within a short period of time after entering into them. For example, consumers in California can get out of gym membership contracts by sending the gym a cancellation notice within five business days of joining. Similar statutes cover insurance, weight loss services, door-to-door sales, and home repair contracts. If these agreements meet all of the requirements for a contract, why would a state allow people to get out of them so easily? Is this good policy? Alternatively, if consumers can cancel these contracts, why not allow everyone to cancel any contract within a few days?

Q2. Locate and read one or more of the contracts you have entered into in the past yearan apartment lease, a university-housing residency agreement, a mobile phone service agreement, terms of use for a fee-based website, or a retail sales agreement for a personal computer. How long is it? How much of it do you understand? Are any of the terms particularly surprising or unfair? If given the opportunity, would you void the contract? There is no need to divulge any personal information in this discussion board. Simply discuss if, and how, the information you have learned so far in this course may have changed your decision.
Q3. Contract law gives minors substantial legal protection. But does a modern high school student need so much protection? Older teens may have been naive in the 1700s, but today, they are quite savvy. Should the law change so that only younger childern, perhaps those aged 14 and under, have the ability to undo agreements? If so, what changes would you recommend? Or is the law reasonable the way it is currently exists?
Q4. Bath Iron Works (BIW) offered a job to Thomas Devine, contingent on Devine’s passing a drug test. The testing was conducted by NorDx, a subcontractor of Roche Biomedical Laboratories. When NorDx found that Devine’s urinalysis showed the presence of opiates, a result confirmed by Roche, BIW refused to offer Devine permanent employment. Devine claimed that the ingestion of poppy seeds can lead to a positive result and that he had tested positive for opiates only because of his daily intake of poppy seed muffins. In Devine’s suit against Roche, Devine argued, among other things, that he was a third party beneficiary of the contract between his employer (BIW) and NorDx (Roche). Given this factual background, fully discuss the following questions.

1. Is Devine an intended third party beneficiary of the BIW-NorDx contract? In deciding this issue, should the court focus on the nature of the promises made in the BIW-NorDx contract itself or on the consequences of the contract for Devine, a third party?

2. Should employees whose job security and reputation have suffered as a result of false test results be allowed to sue the drug-testing labs for the tort of negligence? In such situations, do drug-testing labs have a duty to the employees to exercise reasonable care in conducting the tests?
