For this individual project you will choose a country and use research and historical inquiry to track and analyse its development both domestically and on the international stage. Formulate and support a hypothesis as to how the country arrived at its current state. Examine all issues within the country from multiple perspectives. Use the following categories to guide your research. You will find the course themes echoed throughout.
Power and Governance – Describe the development and nature of governance within the country and the sources of power. Where does the country fit in the worldwide power structure? Does it align more with East or West or somewhere in between? Explain your reasoning by pointing to various alliances and interdepencies.
Economic Disparity – Describe the country’s economy and how it has changed throughout time. Where does it position in the North-South economic spectrum? What types of economic resources drive prosperity or are exploited in the country? Domestic or Multinational corporations?
People, Citizenship and the Pursuit of Justice – Describe the freedom and rights of citizens and identify major events that have shaped contemporary conceptions of justice. Identify major historical figures that played key roles in improving the rights of citizens. Analyse any past barriers to achieving justice within the country.
Culture and Society – Describe the country’s culture, diversity, and world view, recognizing the similarities and differences reflected in various personal, cultural, racial, and ethnic perspectives. How has culture (religion, food, traditions, arts, etc) shaped people’s values and daily life within the country? What are some social norms in the country that have a big influence on society and what has changed over time? Discuss any ethical concerns with certain societal change. Predict a future societal change that could influence society substantially. Required: Play a song about the country’s culture/history and discuss what it says about the country. Could be from a local cultural icon past or present. Interpret how it has shaped and formed society. Ex. “Guantanamera” in Cuba (could also be a modern song that reflects the culture and society)
Time, Continuity, and Change – Past vs Future. How has technological change affected the development of the country? Investigate an event or movement within the country that has stimulated change. Discuss any ethical concerns with certain technological change. Predict a future technological change that could influence society substantially.
