Explain and examine how the behavior of a firm changes when it operates in monopolistic, oligopolistic, and monopolistically competitive market environments.

Explain and examine how the behavior of a firm changes when it operates in monopolistic, oligopolistic, and monopolistically competitive market environments.
In this assessment, you will demonstrate your understanding of monopoly pricing, based on different management criteria, the impact of price regulation of monopolies, and provide detailed explanations of how price effect and quantity effect cause marginal revenue to be different from the price.
Directions:
Using the Word template provided in the Minimum Submission Requirements, answer the following questions based on the situation.
Questions
1. The Gulf Sea Turtle Conservation Group (GSTCG), a non-profit group of volunteers working to collect data on nesting sea turtles and to promote sea turtle conservation, is considering creating a video to educate people about sea turtle conservation. The cost of duplicating the video on a DVD and mailing the DVD to anyone is $5.56. In a GSTCG member meeting, the video plan was discussed. The first two columns of Table 1 show the expected demand for the DVD at different suggested donation levels, and they can act as a single-price monopolist if they choose to. The receipts will be used to fund GSTCG supplies for their data collection and conservation work. At the end of each sea turtle nesting season, any excess funds are donated by the GSTCG to a local non-profit sea turtle research and rehabilitation facility.
a. Complete Table 1 by computing the Total Revenue, Marginal Revenue, Total Cost, and Profit columns, each rounded to two decimal places. The cost of duplicating a video on a DVD and mailing the DVD, the Marginal Cost, is $5.56.

b. The president wants the GSTCG to provide videos to generate the most possible donations (Total Revenue). What price is the president of the GSTCG favoring and how many people will receive the DVD if this becomes the price of the suggested donation? Explain your answer.
c. The Education Outreach Committee wants the GSTCG to provide videos to the most possible number of people. What price is the Educational Outreach Committee favoring and how many people will receive the DVD if this becomes the price of the suggested donation? Explain your answer.
d. The treasurer of the GSTCG wants the DVD program to be as efficient as possible so that the marginal revenue equals marginal cost. What price is the treasurer favoring and how many people will receive the DVD if this becomes the price of the suggested donation? Explain your answer.
e. The Fundraising Committee wants the DVD program to generate as much profit in donations as possible. What price is the Fundraising Committee favoring and how many people will receive the DVD if this becomes the price of the suggested donation? Explain your answer.
2. Imagine an island a short distance off the east coast of a country. This island is called Onus, and it has a population of about 500 residents. Their only way to the mainland is by the ONE ferry boat that runs between Onus and the mainland (the ferry operates as a monopoly).

Similarly, a short distance off the west coast of the same country is another island, Yuri, with a similar population of about 500 residents. Yuri, however, is a tourist attraction. There are MANY ferry boats running between Yuri and the mainland (each ferry operating in this perfectly competitive market). Each Yuri ferry operator provides service to both the tourists and to the 500 west coast island residents.

Using the information that you learned in Chapter 13 of the text, answer the following questions by comparing and contrasting the differences between the monopoly market in Onus and the perfectly competitive market in Yuri.
Explain in detail what differences in demand that the monopoly ferry operator on the east coast island of Onus will experience compared to the demand that a single ferry operator will experience in the perfectly competitive west coast market of Yuri.

A blue curve start above the red curve, then descends sharply to a point from which it begins a gradual rise to the right, and crosses the sharply rising green curve, and is labeled ATC. Both the Onus ferry operator in the monopoly market and each of the Yuri ferry operators in the perfectly competitive market will want to produce at the point that the marginal revenue is equal to the marginal cost. Explain in detail the two reasons that the monopolys marginal revenue will always be less than its price while the marginal revenue in the perfectly competitive market will always be equal to the market price.

Explain in detail how the monopoly ferry operator will determine the quantity of ferry service that she will provide to the 500 residents of Onus. Also explain how that monopoly quantity will compare to the total quantity of ferry service available to the 500 residents of the perfectly competitive market of Yuri by ALL the Yuri ferry providers.

3. Onus residents, in questions 2.a.d. above, complain to their local politicians about the high prices. In an attempt to reduce the exorbitant price that the residents must pay for ferry service to and from the mainland, the local politicians convince the legislature to create a regulatory board which will impose a legal price ceiling on the Onus monopoly ferry operator.
In this scenario, the regulatory board imposed a price ceiling on the Onus monopoly ferry operator that was calculated to be below the ferry operators lowest ATC, but well above its lowest AVC. Explain in significant detail, what will be the short run and long run impacts of such a price ceiling on the Onus monopoly ferry operators profits and continued ability to provide service to the inhabitants of the island of Onus.

In three paragraphs (50-100 words each);
1) Discuss “Black in Blue” by Nicholas Alex, specifically the term “double marginality.” Include a relative example of this term..
2) Describe the case of “Griggs vs. Duke Power Company” in 1971. Explain how this case impacted “de facto discrimination” in the hiring policies of law enforcement and other organizations.
3) Describe the case of “Vanguard Justice Society vs. Hughes” in 1979. Discuss the impact of this case in regard to females and other applicants who planned to apply for employment in a police department. Give a relative example of this ruling!

Discuss two examples of specific microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) that are used to remove pollutants through bioremediation.

Define and describe bioremediation. What is it, and how does it help the environment?
Discuss two examples of specific microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) that are used to remove pollutants through bioremediation. Provide the scientific name (genus and species) of the two microbes selected, and briefly describe their role in bioremediation.
Bioremediation can come in many forms. There are many approaches that can be taken to address diverse perspectives while also providing benefits to the broader community. In a summary paragraph:
Discuss two examples in which bioremediation can be used to meet a global challenge.
Discuss the benefits of each example (for example, there are different approaches to reducing water pollution or improving the health of the environment).

PowerPoint Presentation: Create a PowerPoint presentation fully outlining your examples. Your presentation should be 912 slides in length, and include an introductory slide, in-text citations where applicable, a conclusion slide, and a reference slide. Use images (with citations) to create an effective and professional presentation. Slides should be brief and bulleted. The PowerPoint should include your notes below the slides, outlining exactly what you would say to an audience as you presented it.

Discuss the purpose of demonstrating validity and reliability in the population sampled in the study.

For this project, you will be critiquing the following original empirical research article that reports the results of testing validity and reliability of a research instrument in a special population.

In addition to explaining the study design and results, use the information from the textbook as well as the article to explain each type of validity and reliability that was evaluated in the study. Be sure to answer the following questions in your critique:
Do you have confidence in the research design (e.g., the number of participants, the inclusion criteria, the methods)? Why or why not?
Do you have confidence in the researchers analyses of the validity and reliability of the instrument? Why or why not?
Would you have confidence in the instrument based on the validity and reliability of the instrument as demonstrated in the study? Why or why not?
Would you have any reservations using the instrument in future research? Why or why not?
What additional types of validity and reliability, if any, would you want to determine in future research that were not tested in this study?
Discuss the purpose of demonstrating validity and reliability in the population sampled in the study. Can these results generalize to other populations (ages, gender, abilities) or cultures?

What percent of the daily demand for energy is being met by renewables (both wind and solar)? Is this consistent over the three days?

Renewable Energy Lab Activity
For this lab activity, you will be collecting data from this website, http://www.caiso.com/TodaysOutlook/Pages/Supply.asp
(Links to an external site.)
, three times a day for three days. This means, you should have a total of nine data points to analyze. Consider recording the data in the morning, afternoon, and night.
For each data point, be sure to record:
1. The time of day of the recording [ morning, afternoon, evening] and the exact time.
2. Current demand
3. Current supply from Wind and Solar
Calculate for each data point, what percentage of the supply is coming from wind and solar. You will need to construct a table that shows the data points that you collected, and graphs that will be helpful in your analysis.
For your analysis consider these questions:
What percent of the daily demand for energy is being met by renewables (both wind and solar)? Is this consistent over the three days?
Is the supply of wind and solar consistent throughout the day or does it differ? If so, are there more optimal times of day for solar versus wind?

What are some socioeconomic or psychological changes that may be influencing her nutrition intake?

M.E. is an 83-year-old widowed female who has been referred to you by a local community outreach program. She lives in a small apartment within a government-subsidized public housing unit. Her apartment has cooking facilities, but they are limited. It is somewhat like a kitchenette. She has a small half cook-top with space for heating two pots and a small refrigerator-freezer. The kitchen area has very limited cabinet storage space. She makes all of her meals at home and eats by herself. She used to look forward to eating meals but recently she has noticed that food is not as easy to swallow and that it sticks to her throat. Since this has happened she decided to cook her food longer to make it softer and easier to swallow. Additionally, M.E. rarely consumes meat due to the recent swallowing and throat issues.
She reports feeling extremely tired and drained on many days. When she does not feel up to preparing a regular meal, she just pours herself a quick bowl of cereal with milk. She enjoys a good variety of canned fruits and vegetables. She uses canned types because of the price differences versus frozen or fresh fruits and vegetables and because the canned types are already softer and easier for her to swallow.
M.E. purchases her groceries at a nearby market within a half-mile of her apartment. Before she started feeling tired and drained; she previously walked to the grocery store and rode the bus home with her bags in hand. Now that she feels tired on most days she no longer walks to the store. Therefore, she rides the bus both ways for her groceries (approximately) every 3 days. She has made it a habit to go to the store about 2 times per week so she can handle the bags and so there is enough storage space in the cabinets and refrigerator.
Before the recent swallowing and energy level changes, she has always been considered in the healthy weight range per her BMI. This may be partly due to her previous bi-weekly walking routine to the store. However, recently she has noticed that her clothes are loose and at her last check-up the nurse told her she had lost weight. M.E. is now worried about her overall health status due to her recent weight loss, changes in swallowing, and decreased energy levels. She wants to know if a nutrition supplement may help her regain her prior energy levels and an overall feeling of wellness.
