Question 1 (40 marks) – Psychology Research Study Design Plan (1,000 words
excluding references)

Design a study that addresses a realistic research question from any area of
psychology. You are not required to carry out any experimentation or data collection,
but to write a plan for the proposed study utilizing and integrating the data analysis
techniques taught so far on the module.

Your plan should include the following:
An appropriate title.
Background to the study with reference to relevant literature (approx. 250
words).
Aims and objectives of the study, including your research question(s) (approx.
250 words).
Your methodology, including participants, materials, the type of study design,
your variables and how they will be operationalized, and a detailed description
of how you intend to analyse the data and why such statistical test(s) would
be most appropriate for the data/study (approx. 500 words).

A good answer will be clear, concise, and fully referenced throughout.
The background will not be a full literature review or the introduction section of a
report, but an outline of relevant literature to provide context for your proposed
study.
The aims and objectives should form a concise summary providing enough supporting
information that, for example, an Ethics Committee reviewing the proposal could
understand what you are planning to investigate and why.
The description of the methodology will be specific, include all necessary details, and
show a clear understanding of the study design and choice of statistical test.

Question 2 (60 marks) – Data Analysis (1,000 words excluding tables and graphs)
You have been provided with a unique data file for this question.
A team of psychologists wanted to examine the ability of seniors to remember their
medication, and specifically the effects of both age and the complexity of the
medication regime. They recruited participants that fell into two age categories, 60-
69 years and 70-79 years, some of whom had a simple medication regime (1-2 pills
per day), and some of whom had a complex medication regime (more than 5 pills per
day). Their medication was monitored over the course of a month and their ability to
remember their medication was judged according to how many pills had been forgotten during that time.
Please use the provided data file. You will need to set the data up in SPSS in the correct
format, including defining and labelling of variables, in order to run the appropriate
inferential test for this study.

Answer the following questions:
1) What were the factors (IVs) involved? (2 marks)
2) What were the levels of each factor? (2 marks)
3) What term would you use to describe each factor (e.g. between participants
or within participants)? (2 marks)
4) What was the dependent variable? (1 mark)
5) What are the experimental hypotheses? (3 marks)
Run the appropriate statistical tests and write a Results section for the above study,
following the standard format for a psychology report.

Your Results section should
include:
A paragraph presenting relevant descriptive statistics;
A graph or table, suitably labelled, to summarise the data;
Whether the data met any relevant data assumptions;
A paragraph reporting relevant inferential statistics, with effect sizes, and
including a brief explanation of what the data show;
A statement as to whether or not the experimental hypotheses were accepted;
A suitable graph illustrating the results of the inferential test.

A good answer will show understanding of the relevant research design, as covered in
the module content, and ability to set up, run, and interpret appropriate statistical
tests, and will clearly present all the required data in standard format for the Results
section of a psychology report. Variables will be correctly identified and labelled in
SPSS and given meaningful headings and labels in graphs and tables. If a table is used,
it should not be copied from the SPSS output. Better answers will flow logically from
one point to the next in continuous prose, rather than sounding like a list of answers
to questions. The maximum word count for Question 2 is 1,000 words, but a full mark
answer can be written in fewer words.

Students will present on and write a final paper, which will analyze the psychological aspects of
one extremist group of your choice (see syllabus for a recommended list of extremist groups).
Students must first choose an extremist group on the Final Paper/Presentation Extremist Group
Selection Wiki page on Blackboard. Student may use a group not listed; however, they must first
acquire explicit approval from the professor. An example of both a presentation and a paper are
available on Blackboard for your review.
Presentation Instructions:
The presentation will involve the student preparing a PowerPoint presentation that will be
uploaded for the class. Since a majority of this course involves examining the psychological
mechanisms behind extremist groups, the presentation primarily serves as a kind of historical
briefing on one specific extremist group. The presentation will include two areas: 1) first discuss
the historical aspects of the extremist group (i.e., their history, significant events in their existence,
their members, leaders, ideology, etc.) and, 2) then discuss the psychological aspects of their
extremism. The analysis of psychological factors should comprise a wide variety of psychological
phenomena, including cognitive, social, and clinical psychology. Students will be required to
create and submit a PowerPoint presentation. Remember, the presentation is meant to serve as a
briefing for other studentsyou are teaching them about your selected groupso the PowerPoint
presentation should be easy to follow (audio narration or detailed slide notes are encouraged but
not required, given certain technology constraints). The Presentation is worth 20% of your final
grade.
Presentations are due by Tuesday, July 6, at 11:59pm, and will be uploaded for review during
the final week of the course.

Paper Instructions:
The final paper is required to be at least 10 pages (double-spaced, 1 margins, 12-point Times New
Roman font), not including references. The paper will follow the same format as the presentation,
in that students will be required to write about: 1) the historical accounts of the chosen extremist
group (approximately 4-5 pages) and, 2) the psychological factors which relate to the extremist
group (approximately 5-6 pages).
Students may use open sources (e.g., Wikipedia, YouTube, video sources) and/or expert sources
(e.g., novels) when acquiring information on the historical aspects of the extremist groups.
However, students are required to rely on expert, peer-reviewed sources (e.g., PsycINFO) for the
second portion of the presentation/paper focusing on the relevant psychological factors. Students
are welcome and encouraged to utilize sources assigned throughout the semester. That is, students
are encouraged to apply the material (e.g., social, cognitive, clinical) from the readings/papers in
class and discuss their relation to the specific extremist group in question.
As each of the major topic areas covered in class may not be appropriate for each extremist
groupor alternatively, if students simply wish to focus on two or three more in-depth topics,
rather than covering all of themit is not required to discuss each major topic area covered in
class. Furthermore, even if you do not see that a major topic area is related to your group (e.g.,
clinical), you can make note of this and expand (e.g., discussing how a particular extremist group
did not appear to evidence signs of psychopathology, thus increasing the importance of otherwise
normative cognitive/social factors and supporting theories that overt psychopathology is
insufficient to explain away extremist behavior).
The Final Paper is worth 30% of your final grade.

payments. A repossessor is allowed to drive away in such a car, provided he can
do it peacefully. Gorney worked for Valley of Sun Recovery. He sought a car belonging
to Linda Marsalek and Bob Williams. Gorney knew that there had been other,
failed efforts to repossess the Marsalek car, including a violent confrontation
involving attack dogs. He thought he could do better. Gorney went to the
car at 4:00 in the morning. He unscrewed the bulb in an overhead street lamp.
He unlocked the car, setting off its alarm, and quickly hid. The alarm aroused
the neighborhood. Williams and a neighbor, Griffith, investigated and concluded
it was an attempted theft. They called the police. Gorney watched all of this
from his hiding place. When everyone had gone, Gorney entered the car, again
setting off the alarm and arousing the neighborhood. Williams and Griffith
again emerged, as did another neighbor, dressed in his underwear and carrying a
shotgun. They all believed they had caught a thief. Williams shouted for the
gun and the neighbor passed it to him, but it went off accidentally and
severely injured Griffith.
Griffith sued Valley of Sun. The trial court granted summary

By combining is with this iron catalyst in acidic conditions, the aldehyde functional group is being attacked with hydrides, which are generated from the effect of the acid on the catalyst. Since aldehydes have an electrophilic carbonyl, this reaction might also work with ketones because ketones also have a carbonyl. However, ketones carbonyls are generally less electrophilic so the reaction, if it works, could be slower.

Review Victors Case Study.
Victor is a 27-year-old man who comes to you for help at the urging of
his fiance. He was an infantryman with a local Marine Reserve unit who
was honorably discharged in 2014 after serving two tours of duty in
Iraq. His fianc has told him he has not been the same since his
second tour of duty and it is impacting their relationship. She is also
concerned that he is drinking very heavily, especially on weekends.
Frequently, when he drinks, he becomes very angry and yells at her and
says that he wishes he had never met her because she doesnt care about
all he has gone through. Several times daily he smokes marijuana and
occasionally uses heroin, but is afraid that he might overdose on it, so
he relies more on marijuana to calm himself. Although he offers few
details, upon questioning he reports that he has significant difficulty
sleeping, that he sleeps with one eye open and, on the occasions when
he falls into a deeper sleep, he has nightmares. He endorses experiencing
several traumatic events during his second tour, but is unwilling to
provide specific details he tells you he has never spoken with anyone
about them and he is not sure he ever will. He spends much of his time
alone because he feels irritable and doesnt want to snap at people. He
reports to you that he finds it difficult to perform his duties as a
security guard because it is boring and gives him too much time to
think. At the same time, he is easily startled by noise and motion and
spends excessive time searching for threats that are never confirmed
both when on duty and at home. He describes having intrusive memories
about his traumatic experiences on a daily basis, but he declines to
share any details. He also avoids seeing friends from his Reserve unit
because seeing them reminds him of experiences that he does not want to
remember.
