Write a narrative essay based on a personal experience of significance.

English 105: Essay #1 Personal Narrative
Assignment:
Write a narrative essay based on a personal experience of significance. Your essay must have a
beginning, middle, and end. It should also contain a rising action that leads the reader to the end of the story. As you write the essay, consider how you want your reader to react to the essay’s characters, actions, and overall power of the events.
Thesis: Personal narrative essays are told to make a point or to illustrate a specific idea. The point or specific idea is your thesis statement.
Ask yourself:
• What is my essay about?
• What point do I want my reader to take away about my topic?
The answers to these questions construct the main idea for your paper, which will help you formulate your thesis.
Description:
Personal narrative essays also focus on description. How does the language help your readers “see” and “feel” what is happening? Your language should be specific and provide vivid detail in describing character, place, and action. Consider the narrative from the point of view of your reader: would your reader not only understand your essay, but also be interested?
Dialogue:
Personal narratives also make use of dialogue, either direct or indirect. When presenting dialogue, use the proper punctuation and formats (see the examples of personal narrative essays). Remember to use specific action verbs to indicate how someone makes statement; don’t just say, s/he said when s/he called, cried, or whined. Please note that writers use dialogue selectively to focus on key statements; dialogue is more than a conversation that happened—it must advance the narrative.
Reminders:
Remember that a paragraph is eight or more sentences.
Remember that you do not use contractions in formal writing. (ex. can’t, won’t, shouldn’t-Instead write out cannot (can’t), will not (won’t), should not (shouldn’t), etc.
Your Narration Essay must have a creative, captivating, or descriptive title. “My Narration Essay” or “Writing Assignment I” are not creative titles. Creative titles may include but are not limited too, “The Ordeal with an Unstable Creature,” “The Family Disaster,” “Gucci, Prada, and Orgasms: Representations of Hip-Hop Feminism in Urban Literature,” etc.
The final version of the Narration Essay is due during Week 8 of the course. You will upload the final version of your Narration in Moodle. This final version WILL be graded.
