In this class, we have discussed several technological and scientific breakthroughs that have come about from colonial times through 1865 and the sometimes-unintended societal consequences of these breakthroughs. In this essay you will consider the factors that shaped the development of American science and technology and how American science and technology has shaped society.
You should consider several different breakthroughs in your analysis. I have left the prompt vague to allow you a greater choice in possible breakthroughs to consider for your essay. The time frame for this paper is the long 20th Century (so 1890ish through early 21st Century)

The Prompt
Scientific and technological developments in colonial period through 1865 led to great societal change in unexpected ways. What factors shaped technological development in the US; how did the government, public organizations, and private individuals foster and institutionalize technological change for the advancement of society (civics and social responsibilities); and what ethical dilemmas arose through the impact of this scientific and technological development?
Ethics = are the moral principles governing a person/group/state’s behavior; ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and society

Civics = the privileges and obligations/responsibilities of citizens toward the state and the state toward its citizens

Understanding lessons in civics and ethics (in social responsibility and personal responsibility) are core objectives of this course (set by the state of Texas for US history core curriculum classes).

This is a paper based upon historical actors and events and what they did or didn’t do. WHAT WE DO WANT – We are looking for historical analysis. Go back to the information on how to write a history essay in the Canvas module. Review comments on the first analytical writing assignment (which is also what this is, just longer). Bring in some of the analytic tricks you utilized in the Executive Summary assignment as well.
HINT – organization of essay. A superior way to organize would be
I. Introduction – setting the historical context with the last sentence of the paragraph being your thesis statement
II. Paragraph 1 of the Body – Discussion of factors/reasons leading to technological development. Think of this as how society shapes technology. First sentence will be rule of three thesis and rest of body provides historical evidence and explains how this evidence supports your thesis (analysis)
III. Paragraph 2 of the Body – Discussion of the ways the government and private/public individuals/institutions created and supported technological change
IV. Paragraph 3 of the Body – Discussion of unintended consequences and impact on society (how technological change influenced society) – focusing on ethical aspects of societal change (this can be both positive and negative)
V. Conclusion – DO NOT introduce new evidence here. DO NOT force relevancy to “today.” DO briefly sum up your key points that support the thesis statement in your introductory paragraph.
Note that this shouldn’t simply be a “laundry list” of good and bad breakthroughs or good or bad policies. I really want you to sit back and consider how society influences technology and technology influences society, for both bad and good. So, each paragraph of the body should have your broad thesis statement and then you provide 3-4 pieces of evidence with analysis in support of the thesis of the paragraph.

EVIDENCE – You must have solid evidence for each point you raise in the thesis. Evidence is not simply a statement, there must be an explanation of how that evidence supports the thesis statement.

Have you used evidence from assigned materials posted in Canvas? The non-lecture videos and posted readings such as the one over the H-bomb, the textbook, etc. Also, classroom materials.

HISTORICAL ACCURACY, CLARITY, AND LOGIC

Did you analyze (not summarize)? Is your argument clear and does it make sense? Is it historically accurate? Does your evidence prove your point? Does your analysis answer the prompt? Have you considered the concepts of ethics and civics and possibly changes over time in your essay?
