CASE STUDY: Caregiver Role Strain: Ms. Sandra A.
Sandra, a 47-year-old divorced woman, received a diagnosis of stage 3 ovarian cancer 4 years ago, for which she had a total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo- oophorectomy, omentectomy, lymphadenectomy, and tumor debulking followed by chemotherapy, consisting of cisplatin (Platinol), paclitaxel (Taxol), and doxorubicin (Adriamycin). She did well for 2 years and then moved back to her hometown near her family and underwent three more rounds of second- line chemotherapy. She accepted a less stressful job, bought a house, renewed old friendships, and became more involved with her two sisters and their families.
Sandra developed several complications, including metastasis to the lungs. Then she could no longer work, drive, or care for herself. She had been told by her oncologist that there was nothing else that could be done and that she should consider entering a hospice. She met her attorney and prepared an advance directive and completed her will. She decided to have hospice care at home and, with the help of her family, set up her first floor as a living and sleeping area. She was cared for by family members around the clock for approximately 3 days.
Sandra observed that she was tiring everyone out so much that they could not really enjoy each other’s company. At this time, she contacted the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) to seek assistance. Her plan was to try to enjoy her family and friend’s visits. After assessment, the VNA nurse prioritized her problems to include fatigue and caregiver role strain. Other potential problem areas that may need to be incorporated into the care plan include anticipatory grieving and impaired comfort.

There are three different ways to write a research paper: analytic, interpretive, and
synthetic (you do not have to specify why one you will write).

An analytic research paper aims at recreating the focus, strategy/goal (intent), and
information of one particular text. You, as the analyst of the text, track the text’s logical
structure and message. Your job is first to represent the claims made by a particular
text as the text itself argues (that is, by tracking its own logic structure and
data-gathering strategies, not just its message). Who would profit from this argument,
or be harmed by it, and thus would be interested in it?

A synthetic research paper sets up a comparison/contrast between two (or more) texts. Its focus is the/an issue shared by the two texts; its two columns of data must be strictly parallel, as necessarily reflects a compare/contrast logic. However, it is up to you, the
analyst, to specify on which grounds and to what end the comparison will be carried out.

An interpretive research paper uses one text (or point of view or established argument) to read another. That is, you take up the point of view of one text, and “read” the other
as it would lead you to do. Setting up an interpretive précis places a still higher burden
on you as analyst than does the synthetic précis: you must specify the focus and then
the goal or purpose that will be realized by applying that lead to another text. The
interpretation you are setting up will not be particularly successful if the lead text is not
represented fairly and systematically.

Create a listening guide, First you will need to provide a short historical
discussion that elaborates on either the biography of the performer, establishing the
context in which the recording was made, or the historical/cultural era in which it
emerges. This part should be approximately one to two full pages in length but needn’t
be too long or detailed. However, you should make it clear that you understand how this
work fits in with the artist’s complete output and/or cultural context. In other words, be
concise. Do not turn in an exhaustive term paper, just a relatively brief overview.
However, you will need to do a little bit of research. To begin, I advise that you look at
New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians or New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, both of
which are in the reference collection of the music library. In addition, Grove is available
on-line through the music library web site (http://www.library.stonybrook.edu/ – go to
the Database area). I expect you to follow the standard conventions of academic writing
including the proper citation of all sources (use University of Chicago format).
The second part of the assignment is a breakdown of the significant musical events in the
recording. Model your breakdown after the listening guides provided on Blackboard
(weekly in the Assignments folder). Therefore, begin with a brief overview of the
piece, which should include identifying the musicians on the recording, followed by a
chart of the major moments in the piece. While I don’t expect a second by second
retelling of the piece (i.e., every second accounted for), I do expect that you account for
all major events and that you explain changes in texture (i.e., full ensemble vs. solo
section), style, and tempo. I will also expect comment on changes within a solo, i.e. the
use of double-time figures, dramatic changes in register from low to high or vice versa,
or if the backgrounds change behind the soloist. That sort of thing. As far as the type of music to use, I would prefer you use a jazz recording from after

This week I conducted an educational class for domestic violence After the class I stayed and provided a safety plan and session with one client. This class was held via zoom with myself and nine clients. The main point of this class was to provide education and support for women who have gone through domestic violence relationships and provide a safe space for women to express their experiences within domestic violence and to support one another during their own situations. One client in particular was sharing her experience with her ex husband and how he continued to make her feel like he was in control of her even though he is currently in prison, he is still attempting to have control over her and use scare tactics on her. When I had a one on one session with this client we conducted a needs assessment, completed a safety plan and I provided her individual therapy. Because this was done on the spot after the domestic violence education class, it did not allow me much time to prepare for this case but I was able to utilize some of the experience I have taken away with other clients and from my classes. Oppression has played a role and had an impact on my assessment with this client because she was reserved and reluctant to share her needs and fears. This client shared with me that her abuser had often made her feel as though she did not matter and people would not be willing to help her, which made her feel reluctant to open up. I assured the client that she is safe to speak openly and freely with me and that I am there to provide support for her in any way I could. We talked about her concerns and how we could work together to overcome them. One KSV that was utilized was dignity and self worth. This client felt as though she did not deserve to be helped and she did not deserve someone to listen to her. After we spoke and had a long talk about the situation and came up with ways to help her in her situation she stated that she felt heard and acknowledged as a worthy person for the first time in a while. It broke my heart hearing that this woman did not feel worthy but I was also glad to have been able to help her. Professionally I learned that sometimes it is difficult to come up with the right words to say and know when to say them, but it is important to be an active listener and say something. Personally, I learned that I enjoy working with clients one on one and I admire peoples strengths to overcome situations.

Global Partners in Peace and Development ministry is a non- profit that looks to bring help to several countries with their resources, people, and ministries. The mission of this ministry is to provide the people of the countries they work with the resources needed to survive; as well as grow and to be able to better provide for their needs. Gap Missions wants to prepare people to share the gospel to the world through evangelization, building churches, creating Bible training centers, among many other means to share the good news of Jesus to the world, especially underdeveloped nations. They are fulfilling the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Bible, 2007) Gap Missions has taught many nationals in their Bible and Pastoral Training Institute. This is a great school that equips natives to the Ivory Coast, among other nations, to share the gospel with their people. The emphasis is on Africa, the Middle East, South and Central Asia and anywhere the gospel and Christianity have limited access. The mode of entry used is joint venture. Gap Missions wants to work with the people of the different countries they set foot into. Gap Missions brings in the supplies and some of the leaders, while also wanting natives to come in and teach their people about the Gospel. It is a win-win for both the country and Gap Missions. Going into a foreign country to share the Gospel with people who have probably never heard an in-depth explanation of it can be scary. It is good to remember that God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 states “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Bible, 2007)
