In the coded text lesson, you learned 6 parts to coded text while reading your textbook:
What? Declarative knowledge: What is the concept or process being discussed? (important)
So what? Procedural knowledge: How does this concept work?
Now what? Conditional knowledge: When do I act? Under what circumstances?
Vocabulary: What vocabulary words are important in this reading?
FCD Figures, charts, diagrams: What information is in the figures, charts, or diagrams?
FCD+: What am I inferring from the figures, charts, or diagrams? Part 2: 3-Column Notes
Using the coded text from Part 1, you will translate that information into 3-column notes. the information can be find in any textbook of your choice

Signature Assignment
Final Paper Due 11:59 PM August 12th, 2022
Economics is the study of how individuals make choices under scarcity and is a powerful set of tools for helping to explain the world around us. For the Signature assignment you are expected to formulate a thesis related to economics and defend it in 1-2 double typed pages.
There are two options for the paper:
Option 1: Economic Naturalist
Specifically, please choose a puzzle about the world around us, and then use at least one concept from the class to answer that question.
You should look around for phenomenon in the world around us. You should look for puzzles all around you: in stores, on-line, in newspapers, and at work.
Examples of questions (do not necessarily use these):
(1)Why do Honey Crisp apples cost more than gala apples?
(2) Why has Major League Baseball (MLB) attendance decreased significantly in recent years?
(3) Why is consumption of cow’s milk decreasing?
(4) Why do men’s professional soccer players earn more than women’s professional soccer players?
If you choose option 1, please choose your own question. For the question that you choose, please make sure that the answer to the mystery is not obvious- if it is then it is not much of a puzzle. You will want to choose a question in which you can answer and make a compelling argument in 1-2 double spaced pages. (This should correspond to approximately 450-900 words.)
Please clearly describe the puzzle in the first paragraph. Please feel free to include sufficient details of the puzzle, so that it is adequately described. Clearly state your thesis, which should provide your basic answer to the question. Use the rest of the paper to defend your thesis. Also, please use at least one reference: multiple references are preferred. Please us APA format for citations. Please e-mail me or talk to me in class/office hours with any questions about the paper.
Option 2: Policy Analysis
Formulate a economic policy question to answer or analyze an existing policy. Your analysis could be strictly positive or could also be normative.
Examples of question:
Is the minimum wage the most efficient mechanism for transferring income to low and moderate-income Americans?
Should state governments enact anti-spiking laws? And if so what structure should they take, and how stringent should they be?
Try to find a question or topic that you find interesting but does not have an obvious solution. Clearly define the policy or policy problem. It is also alright if your solution or analysis depends on various states of the world or would depend on data that is not readily available.
Your paper should be 1-2 double spaced pages. (This should correspond to 450-900 words.) Please clearly describe the policy (or proposed policy) you are analyzing in in detail. (This date has been extended from July 26th.) This is purely optional.

Director
Presentation:
After you have concluded your research and screenings,
select a short clip from one of James Cameeron’s films you’ve chosen (no more than 3-5
minutes). This clip should serve as an interesting example of
her/his/their work. Then prepare a 2-3 paragraph introduction to your director
and this clip, to set it up. And then select TWO of the following “interview” questions to answer about your director – in a full paragraph per question.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS (select 2, see #3 above)
In addition to anything you may have already said, name two themes or stylistic elements you saw in common between the films of your chosen director.
Do you think understanding your director’s personal biography influenced the ways in which you saw her/his films?
How do you think social, historical, or cultural context played a role in your chosen director’s content or stylistic choices?

How did your research – especially about critical reception – about this director change or influence your impression of her/his films?

Letters to Elected Representatives Assignment
The American political system is organized as a representative democracy, in which elected representatives are expected to enact public polices that reflect the will of the public. This requires the elected representatives to know the policy preferences of their constituents (the members of the public whom they represent). One way that constituents can convey their policy preferences to their elected representatives is by sending a letter or email to their elected representatives.
Assignment Description
In this assignment, you will write to four of your elected representatives, requesting from each a specific change in public policy.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, students will “demonstrate a working knowledge of how to access the political process by participating in their rights and duties as citizens.” (SLO #4)
Assignment 1. Write a letter to each of the following:
US president.
Your representative in the US House of Representatives.
Your representative in the California State Assembly.
One of your elected representatives in local government (city, county, school board, etc.).
2. Each letter should request a different change in public policy.
(It should not, for example, a be a personal request, such as forgiving your parking tickets.)
3. The recipient of your letter should be an elected representative who has the power to directly influence the policy you want changed.
This requires you to think about issues of jurisdiction (federal, state, local, etc.) and executive vs. legislative powers.
4. Each letter should be at least one single-spaced page in length.
5. Make sure you are writing to officials who are your own representatives, as opposed to officials who represent people living elsewhere.
You can identify your own state assembly and US House representatives at www.votesmart.org (Links to an external site.).
You can identify your local (not state or federal) elected representatives on the website of the government body in which they serve (e.g. San Mateo County, City of Belmont, San Francisco Unified School District, etc.).
6. Each letter should explain:
Which issue you are concerned about.
Why this issue is important to you personally.
What specific change in policy you want.
What, specifically, you’d like the recipient of your letter to do to help change the policy. (For example, introduce legislation, co-sponsor a bill, change administration policy, etc.).
7. Each letter must include:
Your name.
Your address (at minimum, the city in which you live).
The name of the person to whom you’re writing.
The elected office of the person to whom you’re writing.
The contact address of the elected official to whom you’re writing. You can find the addresses for your federal and state representatives at www.votesmart.org. (Links to an external site.) You can find the contact addresses for your local government representatives on the website of the government body in which they serve (e.g. San Mateo County, City of Belmont, San Francisco Unified School District, etc.).

1. Evaluate the validity of the following statement: “During the period studied in this course (roughly 750 to 1650 AD) religion and politics became increasingly separated.”
2. Compare and contrast what it would have been like to live in Europe in about 800 AD, 1215 AD and 1630 AD. Please be as specific as you can about where you are talking about and how certain practices (e.g. religious rites, power structures, availability of education, possibilities for travel, interaction with foreigners, etc.) would vary in these three periods.
