The aim of the course was to explore the nature of happiness. What does it mean for one’s life to be a
happy one? The answer that we got was “it depends on what you mean by happiness”. It turns out that
there are a number of distinct notions of happiness that all track different things, things that we care deeply
about. The main distinction that we dealt with was the distinction between objective and subjective
happiness, which I used to split the course in two. The first part of the course was on the science of
happiness, which studies subjective happiness. The second part of the course was on the philosophy of
happiness, which studies objective happiness.
Thus, the aim of the final writing assignment is for you to show that you understand the distinction between
subjective and objective happiness. The best way of displaying this understanding is by using various
analyses of happiness and showing how one can be subjectively happy but not objectively happy and vice
versa. In order to do this, you will write a paper that should accomplish the following tasks (please read the
directions carefully):
1. Select some well-known public figure who is widely regarded as happy. Offer a sufficiently rich
description of their lives – enough to provide the following analysis. This should not take more than
one page. (Due to the work done in previous semesters, you cannot write about Ellen DeGeneres.)
2. Next, identify some aspect(s) of their lives that we know from our readings are strongly correlated
with high life satisfaction. If you don’t know what “life satisfaction” is referring to, you need to go
back and do your readings. This is part of the assignment! I did provide a hint in the intro above.
Looking back at your reading, identify and describe the evidence that we have that points to a
strong correlation. Provide references to our reading(s) and use proper citations (Either MLA or
Chicago is fine). [For your discussion, DO NOT talk about Seligman’s PERMA theory of flourishing.]
1. Finally, reflect on this person’s life and ask yourself whether, from the point of view of any of the
philosophers we have read, this life can be lacking from the point of view of actual well-being. (Pick
just one philosophical view!) That is, would any of the philosophers that we have read conclude
that their life isn’t an ideal one? Having selected a philosopher who would come to this conclusion,
describe this philosopher’s view of actual well-being then explain what this philosopher would say

Different Types of Arthritis
In the United States alone, 58.5 million people are affected by arthritis, making it the leading cause of work disability. Globally, more than 350 million people are affected. What is arthritis and how does it affect people everyday?
Arthritis is inflammation and swelling around the joints, tissue around the joints and the connective tissue. In general symptoms include stiffness and pain but can vary depending on the type of arthritis the individual has. There are 100+ different types of arthritis each affecting different joints and parts of the body.
The most common type is Osteoarthritis, this disease affects the whole joint. Eventually the outer cartilage and fluid will break down, making it painful and difficult to move the joint. Inflammation and rubbing of the bones is common and is known to cause immense pain, this is common in the knees, spine, hips and hands. Treatments that are available for osteoarthritis are pain medications like tylenol and NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), physical therapy, and hot and cold therapy.
The next type of arthritis affects 1.3 million Americans, with 75% being women, this is Rheumatoid Arthritis. When an individual has Rheumatoid Arthritis, their immune system isn’t working properly and will eventually attack the tissue of the body’s organs and joints. When someone has RA instead of their immune system creating inflammation to protect them from bacterias and invaders, their immune system becomes overactive and attacks healthy tissue as well, such as the synovium (lining) of the joints. Over time this causes permanent damage to joints and organ tissues, along with increasing pain. RA is commonly known to affect the hand, knees and internal organs such as the liver, heart and eyes. We can compare RA to another type of arthritis, such as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, as it is much alike, instead JIA is in kids and teens. JIA is the same as RA in a way it is also an autoimmune disease that causes the inflammatory system to attack healthy tissues. There is no cure for either Rheumatoid or Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, but medications such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARs).
Gout is the next type of arthritis we will talk about today, this form of arthritis is also an inflammatory arthritis, but is different then others like RA, as Gout does not cause whole body inflammation. Instead, Gout is an imbalance of uric acid levels. If your body is unable to remove excess uric acid, the levels become too high as it begins to build up in the blood, this is known as hyperuricemia. Next is where the inflammation comes in, this uric acid then crystallizes around the joints causing painful inflammation. This crizalation causes lumps called tophi in the joints and affected tissues. A common term with Gout Arthritis, is Gout Flares, this means one minute you could feel fine, and the next you can be in immense pain. Treatment options for Gout are medications such as colchicine, corticosteroids, and uric- acid reducing drugs.
The last type of arthritis we are going to discuss today is Lupus Arthritis. Lupus is another autoimmune inflammatory disease and is common in ages 15-45. . The cause of Lupus is unknown, but results include joint pain, rashes, headaches and mouth sores. Lupus is also known to affect internal organs such as lungs, kidneys and the brain. Treatment medications for Lupus include DMARs, Corticosteroids, and NSAIDs.
25.7 million adults in the United States are limited from their daily activities because of arthritis. According to the CDC, 8 million adults have reported that arthritis has affected their ability to work. The CDC is also continuing to conduct research every day in order to better treat and support individuals with arthritis.

Paper Format
Students should follow all of the principles of writing as taught during their Freshman English courses.
Standard essay format: Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
Introduction should include an appropriate attention getter (for this assignment I recommend using a narrative as the attention getter), the thesis of the paper, and a preview of the rest of the essay.
Body paragraphs should include a topic sentence, or claim that directly supports the thesis, evidence to support your claims, additional claims and evidence as required, and finally a summary statement that transitions to the next body paragraph.
Conclusion should include a review of what was covered during the essay, a restatement of your thesis, and return to your attention getter (conclude the narrative began at the beginning of your speech).
Follow all the rules of grammar including capitalization of all proper nouns and proper names.
Work should be free from excessive spelling errors. (Reading your paper out loud will significantly improve the readability of your paper as sometimes we think something is correct until we hear it spoken).
Length and sources.
Length: The paper should be between 1700 and 2000 words, this word count does not include the “References” page.
Sources: The paper should have at a minimum, 10 sources representing a variety of perspectives.
The personal and opposing views should have no less than 4 sources each.
The new understanding should contain between 3-4 sources.
The rest of the paper should contain a source for any piece of information that is not common knowledge. (In other words, if you needed to look something up, it isn’t common knowledge and therefore you must include this as one of your sources.
The textbook may be cited repeatedly but may not count as one of your required sources.
All papers must follow APA guidelines regarding formatting and citations.

Running header on every page; a shortened version of the paper’s title, student’s last name, and page number.

Write a 3 page double spaced paper to address the following task. Start by selecting a public health problem of interest. In this paper you will develop a SMART objective to address the problem of interest. You will need to create a basic community based intervention program to address the problem first. Then, utilizing the program conceived, develop a short-term outcome (see figure 8-3 in the textbook) using the SMART objective model.

In your introduction paragraph, introduce the problem of interest and describe the community based intervention program. Include your SMART objective as part of this paragraph. Next, include a paragraph to address each of the SMART components. Use the questions in Table 8-10 from the textbook to guide you in developing the content presented in each paragraph. In your conclusion, summarize the problem, program, and how this objective will help in the assessment of desired program outcomes.

You will need to include a minimum of 3 references for this paper. One can be the textbook.
