Now that you all have considered the topic you’d like to pursue this term, let’s start our deep dive into the literature. Using the Life Library (Google Scholar is a good place to start too) or any other resource at your disposal, start researching your topic and collecting peer-reviewed/scholarly articles. For your assignment due at the end of Week 3 (“The Introduction/Literature Review”) you will need to have collected and summarized/analyzed at least 10 articles on your topic (your book will tell you that many more sources are required for a full literature review and your book is right…but for the purposes of this class and our practice, I’m only requiring 10).

For this discussion board assignment, I’d like you to do the following.

Overview: The importance of compensation varies depending on the viewpoint, as described by Barry Gerhart and Jerry Newman in Compensation. Society
views compensation as a measure of justice; managers may view compensation as a major expense or a motivator; employees view compensation as an
entitlement or as an incentive. Regardless of the viewpoint, fairness and equity are essential. Compensation must also be up-to-date, competitive in the market,
and easy to understand.
Aligned pay structures support the way the work gets done, fit the organization’s business strategy, and are fair to employees. Organizations typically task an inhouse human resource (HR) professional or hire an HR consultant to create and maintain the company’s pay structure.

Prompt: Salary Surveys: To ensure the pay structure is externally competitive, a salary survey should be conducted, as stated by Lisa Burke in Designing a
Pay Structure. For the results of a survey to be valid, the market pay data must be from a relevant labor market. Since most of the office support, HR, and
operations jobs will be filled by regional candidates, local pay data should be gathered.

A salary survey is developed by your team and sent to industry competitors. Descriptive data such as organization size, industry, annual revenue as well as
compensation data for each of the benchmark jobs were collected. Surveys were completed and returned by six organizations that recruit and hire similar
positions within a 90-mile radius of Rockville. Base pay data from the responding organizations are reflected in Appendix B of the Final Project Case Study.
Organizations are referenced as companies A, B, C, D, E, and F for anonymity. Those who participated also received copies of the results for their
contribution.

In this assignment, you will address the external competitiveness component of a pay structure using the specifically designed case scenario. Read the Final
Project Case Study (linked to in your course) for detailed information on the requirements for this project.

The class project for this course is a written report, that addresses the biological study of a specific behavioral or mental phenomenon (normal or pathological) covered in the readings and videos. Please select a behavioral or mental phenomenon such as language or schizophrenia and then select a biological strategy for investigating it, such as hormonal or genetic mechanisms, neurotransmitters, drug treatments, or localization of brain processes by imaging. One of the most challenging, illuminating, and valuable cognitive skills you will practice in college will be synthesis—the act of making connections between two or more different texts in order to enhance your (and the reader’s) understanding of each. Essay #3 differs from the previous two essays in that I am stipulating that you use (and cite!) at least one nonliterary work in addition to the literary work you are analyzing. This source must be a text that provides a cultural, historical, or artistic link to the work of literature—there must be an intertextual relationship to which you may draw attention—in other words, one text is illuminated in light of the other. Types of texts could include but are not limited to the following:

-a nonfiction essay

-a painting or other piece of art
-historical research or literary criticism
Your thesis statement in the essay should present the relationship between the literary and nonliterary textsor explain how one enhances our understanding of the other. 1. Research Elia Kazan’s 1951 film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire. What did the film remove or otherwise change about the original play? Why? How was the film received by audiences of the period?
2. In Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People,” Hulga seems to have adopted the philosophy of nihilism, “the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence” (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). What brand of nihilism does Hulga seem to espouse? What do her statements to Manley Pointer and her mother demonstrate about her philosophy? How does this philosophy (or skewed version of it!) fail her in the end? 3. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” mentions two famous jazz musicians: Louis Armstrong, whom the narrator cites as an example of jazz, and Charlie Parker (Bird), whom Sonny prefers. Research one or both of these musicians and their music. How do their musical styles provide insight into the differences between the narrator and Sonny?
4. Examine “Recitatif” in light of the civil rights movement at the time(s) the story takes place. How does research and insight into specific aspects or moments in this movement help readers to understand the story?
5. What does Adrienne Rich’s poem “Diving into the Wreck” represent? In other words, for what personal, social, or political movement or experience is it an allegory? What is symbolized, for instance, by the “book of myths” or even the wreck itself?
