Statistics Project

Problem: Consider one way of modeling a
problem. Say you have a device and in any given year, there is a 1 in 6 chance
that the device will fail. One question is, “On average, how long will it be
before such a device fails?” This sort of problem is what will be modeled and
analyzed here.
The problem
above can be modeled as follows: Roll a normal fair six-sided die. Rolling a 1
will count as “fail”. Anything else will count as “not-fail”. The random
variable we will use will be
= # of rolls required until
a 1 is rolled = “time until failure”
This is a random variable, so in each experiment (for each
device), this will produce a value. For example, if we roll , then = 5 (we count the
final roll).

Explore global health care financing by reading articles provided and researching further; draw conclusions relating to solutions to US healthcare problems based on those findings and other considerations (both outside research and your own opinion).

One of the arguments against universal health care is that medical providers will not want to work for the government so fewer talented individuals will go into health care and those who do, will not have an incentive to innovate or provide high quality care. What do you think about this argument against universal health care?
As you study the information (charts, graphs and articles) provided, you’ll find that 1.) The United States is the only country of all developed countries that does not have the government as the single payor or as an option to pay for nearly every citizen in that country and 2.) The United States is not at the top (or in some cases even near the top) for most health care outcomes. The US is not one of the worst countries for per capita smoking but where do we rank very high (as one of the worst) is in terms of obesity rates. How does this (our rate of obesity) likely to contribute to our ranking in health care? What can REALISTICALLY be done to help improve the health of US citizens on a macroeconomic (our citizens as a whole) level and what role can health care play?

Choose a middle-range theory or grand theory that, in your opinion, can be applied to research.

Week 3 Discussion
A phenomenon is the term used to describe a perception or responses to an event. Examples of phenomena in nursing include caring and responses to stress. Assumptions are the ideas that we take for granted. They explain the nature of the concepts in the theory, giving it structure.
Choose a middle-range theory or grand theory that, in your opinion, can be applied to research.
What is the phenomenon of concern in this theory?
What are the assumptions underpinning this theory?

discussion thread, Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Young Goodman Brown”

For this discussion thread, discuss at least two of the following questions and then respond to at
least two of your classmates’ posts.

1) When Young Goodman Brown sees the man in the forest, it is stated that there is a crook in the
road. A crook in the road indicates that there is a change in direction. Explain why this is significant.

2) You may need to return to the story to notice this, but YGB often states that he has gone far
enough and will return home. However, each time, the devil entices him to stay. Do you feel that it is
the devil’s doing that Brown stays, or is it due to Brown’s choice? Explain.

3) The story states that Faith is “aptly named.” Explain the significance of Brown’s wife’s name. How might it have double meaning in the story?

4) Brown lives a sad, lonely life after his time in the forest because he no longer trusts those around him, including his wife. What do you feel is the ultimate message of this story?

5) Do you think Brown is justified in distrusting those around him? By the end of the story, we do not know if the events of the night took place or if Brown dreamt them. Regardless of that, we do know that people are capable of both good and evil. Discuss these things in answering the question.

When Young Goodman Brown sees the man in the forest, it is stated that there is a crook in the road. A crook in the road indicates that there is a change in direction. Explain why this is significant.
When Young Goodman brown comes to the crook in the road, the story has changed directions- what seemed as a simple trip away from home to deny the devil has suddenly become one that will change his views on both the people and the world around him.
3) The story states that Faith is “aptly named.” Explain the significance of Brown’s wife’s name. How might it have double meaning in the story?
Faith represents all that Brown believes is good and pure. She is the most Godly person he knows. When suddenly this belief is challenged, he stops trusting her. Until then, he had swore that so long as Faith remains holy, then his religion was worth trying to fight for. By the end of the story he is alone in his misery and has lost his ‘faith’.

1) When Young Goodman Brown sees the man in the forest, it is stated that there is a crook in the road. A crook in the road indicates that there is a change in direction. Explain why this is significant.
When YGB sees the man in the forest, this is when he starts talking about going from being a good person to being a bad person; from a man of Christian faith to following the devil. This is significant because he has never done this or been like this and this creates a major change in his life that never resolves fully.
4) Brown lives a sad, lonely life after his time in the forest, because he no longer trusts those around him, including his wife. What do you feel is the ultimate message of this story?
I feel like he let the devil into his life for even a moment and that changed his life forever. He let his guard down, questioned his faith which likely carried him and held up his relationships all his life which is what made his life wholesome and happy. I feel like the ultimate message was that he couldnt trust himself as he wasnt for sure what happened so he didnt feel like he could trust anyone else either which made him sad.

Controversial Statement: The more common situations of child homicide arise not out of the intent to kill the child; rather it is the end result of harsh punishment. Therefore such offenders should not be handled in criminal courts and the offenses should be criminal offenses, but rather the cases should be handled in juvenile and domestic relations courts.
