Find three pieces of music and for each piece tell us about the musical element or elements that impressed you the most. Use technical terms (for example, dynamics, rhythm, tempo, etc. — . Instructions: Over the course of the semester we will review the symptoms, etiology (cause) and treatment associated with several psychological disorders as defined in DSM-5. This research paper will provide the opportunity to review a specific topic associated with a disorder in greater depth. For this assignment, you will review and utilize several sources (books, journal articles, etc) and summarize this information in a cohesive paper.
I suggest the following approach:
1. Review the text chapter on a category of psychological disorder that you found most interesting.
2. Choose a specific disorder. For example, do not choose all of the Anxiety Disorders, be more specific and choose Social Anxiety Disorder or Panic Disorder or Agoraphobia.
3. Next, decide one specific topic related to this disorder. For example, you may be interested in Depression, but Depression as a topic would be much too broad. Narrow your focus, for example: The prenatal effects of anti-depressants, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment and Depression, The relationship between Major Depressive Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.
4. Collect resources. You may use books, but you must also use recent journal articles. These can be located through the college database. Do not use magazine articles or social media posts.
5. Read these resources (at least 5) and summarize the most significant information.
6. Write a 5-7 page paper on your topic. (Title page and references do not count in this page limit).
7. You may divide your topic into sections if you wish. See Below.
8. Make sure to use proper quotes and citations. You will follow the American Psychological Association’s (APA) format for citations.
9. Do not use the first person at all. The first person is not appropriate for research papers.

Let’s say you wish to do a paper on Medications used to treat Depression. After gathering resources, you need to organize your paper in a structured format.
For example, it is ok to use headings. You will decide the headings, but think about the person reading your paper. Try to have a flow which makes it easy to follow.

The objective is that you have a writing experience which will allow you to learn about a specific topic in greater depth than your text chapter describes.
If you find your topic in your text, look at the resources cited by the text authors, this may be a good start.

Your essay must include a Works Cited page. The citation style of the Works Cited page may be either Chicago, APA, or MLA. The selected citations must be appropriate to the exam topic and the citations must support the assertions made in the exam.
Your essay will include three main parts—the Thesis/Introduction, Argument, and Conclusion.
The Introduction section should clearly state the thesis within the first 1-2 paragraphs. The thesis must be relevant and appropriate to the argument and demonstrate an accurate and complete understanding of the question. This section should make it clear which question you are answering, but it should do more than restate the question by offering a brief response and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.
The Argument section (3-4 pages) should incorporate pertinent details from the assigned readings but you may also use outside readings. The section must provide relevant historical evidence to support the thesis and the key claims made in the argument as needed. It should maintain focus and avoid sidetracking. It should present your answer to the question clearly and concisely in an organized manner and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.
The Conclusion section should be in the last part of your essay exam within the last 1-2 paragraphs. It should briefly restate the thesis and summarize the main points of the argument. It should also demonstrate insight and understanding regarding the question asked and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.

Week 2 Creative Writing Assignment:
This week’s creative assignment is “Who is the speaker?” Pick one of the three poems (“homage to my hips,” “The Woman Thing,” or “Wild nights – Wild nights!”) and create a 400-word description of the poem’s speaker. This will require you to use your imagination and develop the character outside of the poem.
Do not analyze the poem (tell what is happening in the poem and why). The character you describe will be a product of your imagination. He or she has an identity that is separate from the poem. This character is speaking in the poem but is not confined to just what is occurring in the poem. He or she has a life. What is that person’s lifestyle? What does this person look like? What is the person’s name? Does he or she have a family? A job? Interests? Have fun with this assignment and remember that this person is whatever you imagine him or her to be.
