understanding modern china

4 documents that must be viewed!!
You must check the content requirements of “Essay instructions and topics 2022”.
Content must be completed in accordance with the grading requirements of the “Rubric Essay” and “Annotated Bibliography Evaluation Rubric” (all content must be included)
Must review the formatting requirements in “The China Quarterly” and the reference must follow the examples in this document(important!!!)
All referees must be academic
There are two main components:Annotated Bibliography(600words)+Essay(2400 words)
The “2 parts of content analysis” document has a specific explanation of how to write these two parts
1.Annotated Bibliography: Please annotate four sources that you intend to use for your essay.
You must write 150 words on the quality, reliability and relevance to your essay of each of these four sources (a total of 600 words). For helpful hints on writing an annotated bibliography, see https://student.unsw.edu.au/annotated-bibliography. This annotated bibliography is worth 10% of the 50% allocated for the essay.
Submit the draft version of your annotated bibliography in class in the Week 10 seminar (this will be your RAT 4 task).
2.Essay: The 2,400-word essay (± 10%)
choose one topic
1. In media and scholarship, twentieth-century China is frequently referred to as “revolutionary China”. Do you agree with this characterisation?
2. Is it accurate to refer to the period from the Opium Wars to the foundation of the PRC as “the century of humiliation”?
3. How important was the New Culture Movement in changing Chinese attitudes to life and society? (Consider the role of modern publishing and include some discussion of keywords such as “democracy”, “enlightenment”, and “science”.)
4. Was Mao Zedong a successful political leader? Was his legacy mainly negative or were there positive elements? (In your essay, consider the definition of “success”.)
5. During the early parts of the Cultural Revolution, why did young people act so violently?
6. How did the intellectual and economic changes of the reform period lead to the Tian’anmen Square protests of 1989?
7. Did China become capitalist during the reform period?

Requirements: !!
1. The essay must be written as if it were a research paper submitted for publication to the journal The China Quarterly (Cambridge Journals), one of the leading journals in contemporary China studies. It is highly recommended that students access and read articles from The China Quarterly (and other academic journals) to get a feel for the style and nature of academic research and writing.
2. The essay must include a bibliography. A bibliography is a complete list of sources consulted about a topic, but not necessarily cited in your work. A bibliography looks the same as a reference list, except that it may list more sources than a reference list. Include in your bibliography all materials consulted in your essay research. You must list at least two primary sources and at least five scholarly secondary sources (articles in academic journals or chapters in academic books). Insert the four annotated secondary sources (see item 3 below) into your alphabetically-ordered bibliography.
3. Please annotate four secondary sources that you used for your essay.

PR Campaign

There are two parts to this assignment.
Part one: Two case summaries (approximately 500 words each)
In the first part of this assignment, you will critically analyse two similar (recent!) PR campaigns to share with your client. For each of the examples you choose, consider:
Campaign context – Outline the relevance of the organisation (or individual) to your client, and describe their PR challenges; how are these comparable scenarios to the situation facing your client?
Stakeholder analysis – Identify the relevant stakeholders in each case, and consider how these are relevant or comparable to the scenario facing your client
The PR/communications strategy employed – Outline the strategic approach employed in each case, and PR channels used to execute this
Campaign evaluation/key learnings – What worked, what didn’t and how might your client adapt their own campaign in response to these learnings?
You should share approximately 500 words on each case. These case studies are designed to give your client comfort that your advice takes into account similar cases from the past, and the learnings gained from these (ie: your advice is backed by awareness and know-how!).
Your case summaries must be based on real, comparable cases from the (recent) past – ideally, within the past five years. You may include cases from within the past 10 years if required.
Part two: Campaign plan (approximately 1000 words)
In the second part of the assignment, you will design a PR campaign for an individual or organisation in response to a specific scenario. Your campaign plan should take into account the learnings of the cases you have studied (above). When designing your PR campaign, include:
Campaign context – Briefly introduce the challenge your proposal sets out to address
Three SMART objectives – These must be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound!
Stakeholder analysis – Who are the key audiences to consider in this campaign?
Three key messages – What are the most important messages to communicate to your stakeholders via this campaign?
Campaign plan – Detail the PR response you suggest your client pursues to best manage this challenge (and achieve your stated objectives!). What is the “big idea” that ensures this campaign will cut through to reach your target stakeholders? How will you generate earned media coverage? How will you phase the campaign?
Communications channels – What PR platforms will you rely on to execute this plan? Consider earned, shared and owned media (NO paid media!). For earned media, include your “Tier 1” (top) target media outlets
Measurement – How will you evaluate the success of your campaign throughout its duration? How will you keep your client informed of its success and/or issues to address?
Assignment scenarios
You may choose one of the following scenarios – note, there are both proactive and reactive options. Your proposal should be developed for a real-world client.
Proactive campaign scenarios:
A major FMCG company is launching a new product into the market and needs to generate maximum awareness and engagement ahead of the launch
A government organisation is announcing a new policy, program or item of legislation, and needs to ensure the community is informed and engaged in the decision (eg: the COVID-19 vaccination program, mental health reform)
A corporate organisation wishes to promote its newly established CSR program, aiming to generate awareness and maximise positive consumer sentiment about the strategy.
Reactive campaign scenarios:
A celebrity requires an image restoration strategy following a recent scandal
A business is in hot water following a recent cultural or environmental disaster attracting widespread media attention and public outrage (eg: an oil spill, a gas or chemical explosion, destruction of a sacred cultural site)
A prominent business has been exposed to a data privacy breach, impacting thousands of customers.
Assignment submission
You should present this assignment in the form of a campaign proposal, complete with subheadings. Your proposal should include desk-based research via company websites, media releases, social media content, podcasts and more, and/or (reputable!) news media coverage and industry content from publications such as PR Week, B&T and Mumbrella. You may also include academic research but keep in mind this is a client proposal, not an academic essay. This assignment is designed for you to apply your learning!
This assignment should be approached as a real-life campaign proposal, not a university assignment. YOU are the PR expert! Prepare your proposal as though you were submitting this to your client, not to your tutor.
Assessment criteria
Your assignment will be assessed on:
The relevance and suitability of the case studies you have chosen, and the critical insight and analysis applied to each
The rigour and suitability of your suggested PR campaign, with consideration given to all seven areas set out above
Your demonstrated understanding and application of course content
The clarity of your writing and cohesive structure/presentation of your proposal (make it client-ready!).

Directions
Our course anthology, Rereading America offers us an exploration of various social themes under the guise of cultural myths. The text explores many cultural myths in the areas of family, gender, equality, and issues of individual privacy, to name a few. Using one of these themes as your context, select a controversial social or political issue open to debate and take a position on it.
A good way to approach this paper is to think of an issue that lends itself to a public policy you would support—or think of a current policy you reject.
Write an 7-10 page argument in which you follow the classical arrangement and in which you support your position with research from a variety of sources. Important stipulation: One cited source for your essay must come from the anthology Rereading America. You will submit a Works Cited page for your research paper. If you write at least 7 pages, note that your Works Cited page will not count as the 7th page. The Works Cited page will count as your 8th page. Your essay should consist of at least 7 to 10 pages of writing and you must cite from at least 8 outside sources such as:
Scholarly Sources
academic/scholarly journal articles
encyclopedias
e-books written for an academic audience
Popular Sources
magazines
newspapers
ebooks written for a general audience
Other types of Sources Such As
credible websites (.gov/.edu/.org)
podcasts
personal interviews
youtube videos
Guidelines
Follow the research paper outline
Use a formal tone
Use direct quotations and occasional paraphrases
Format your paper according to MLA style guidelines
Attach the list of the Works Cited—DO NOT attach your annotated bibliography.
Must be at least 7 pages long

Problem-Solving Application—Whole
Foods vs. Whole Amazon

Amazon acquired grocery giant Whole
Foods in 2017 in a blockbuster deal, but one consequence of this acquisition is
that Amazon’s highly centralized and data-driven approach to business decisions
has clashed with that of Whole Foods. This has frustrated both employees and
Whole Foods customers. This activity is important because mergers and
acquisitions are not guaranteed to have universally positive results,
particularly if the two companies involved have significantly different
strategies or cultures.

The goal of this exercise is for you
to consider the nature of the culture clash between Whole Foods and Amazon, as
well as how both companies can overcome these issues.

Read about Amazon’s acquisition of
Whole Foods and its organizational behavior-related implications. Then, using
the three-step problem-solving approach, answer the questions that follow.

Investigative journalist Michael
Blanding put it best, “Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods… was the corporate
equivalent of mixing tap water with organic extra virgin olive oil. You’d be
hard-pressed to find two companies with more different value propositions.1
Stories quickly emerged about Whole Foods customers unhappy about the changes
at their favorite organic retailer, and they weren’t the only ones complaining.
Similar negative stories emerged from employees regarding the new performance
driven expectations imposed by Amazon.

Immediate Impact
After the acquisition, Amazon’s
presence was immediately felt. In addition to plastering its logo everywhere in
Whole Foods stores, it also used its strengths in data and data analysis to
determine appropriate product mixes and bring efficiencies to many processes.
After all, Amazon is known for its efficiencies, low costs, and low prices.

Clash
This is a stark contrast to Whole
Foods’ highly empowered approach to doing business, wherein individual stores
and their employees had autonomy regarding decisions about product selection,
inventory, and how best to serve customers. This employee-centric focus is what
earned the company a spot-on Fortune’s Best Places to Work list for 20
consecutive years, and the reason its customers enjoyed personalized intensive,
hands-on service. Although this decentralized, high-touch approach had real
benefits, it also had considerable inefficiencies that Amazon was keen to
address.

Amazon and its employees utilized
data, rigorous analysis and controls, and demanding performance management
practices. In the eyes of Amazon, customers were faceless digital profiles of
purchasing history and preferences. This environment was a good fit for some
employees but incredibly stressful and negative for others. Evidence for this
was Whole Foods dropping from Fortune’s list in 2018 (it didn’t make the list
in 2019 either).

Unrealized Potential?
These differences have the potential
to undermine the hopes and goals of the merger, which were to bring Amazon’s
efficiencies and operating prowess to Whole Foods’ unique approach and loyal
customers, enabling it to scale up and make an even larger impact in the
market. Leaders at Amazon, and to a lesser extent at Whole Foods, now have
decisions to make. Problems exist, and the success of the marriage depends on
solving them.

Assume you’re a consultant, what
would you recommend to Amazon’s leadership?

Apply the 3-Step Problem-Solving
Approach
Step 1:
Define the problem as described in the case.
Step 2:
Identify the causes of the problem. Which inputs and processes from the
Organizing Framework are evident?
Step 3:
Make recommendations to Amazon’s leadership regarding how to realize the
potential of the merger.

In looking at the “10 Project Management Lessons from the Titanic Disaster” what THREE points are the most useful lessons to you? Why? Be sure to fully develop your responses and weave examples in when possible. (300 word minimum)

In this paper, I would like to pick up where many of you touched on in the final question in the last module’s quiz (about the Titanic disaster) and discuss what you think are the top FIVE reasons projects, in general, fail. This second module offers some additional insight on this issue, including the case study on “Quasar Communications,” so as to give you more to consider. In establishing best practices in project management, it is imperative to identify what doesn’t work and to learn from others (as well as our own) mistakes. As always, assignments in this course encourage you to draw from any previous experience you have coming into this class to support your arguments. The paper will be assessed on how well developed your ideas are.

In looking at the “10 Project Management Lessons from the Titanic Disaster” what THREE points are the most useful lessons to you? Why? Be sure to fully develop your responses and weave examples in when possible. (300 word minimum)
Your Answer:
Three main points that are the most useful lessons to me in looking at the “10 Project Management Lessons from the Titanic Disaster” are:
1- The importance of knowing what’s being measured: I believe this is an important point because there were not enough life boats for the number of people in the ship, which clearly played an important role on how many people ended up loosing their lives.
2- The need to keep stakeholders informed during all steps of a project: After the iceberg clash, one of the leading nurse in first class for the Allison family pulled their one-year-old son out of the family parcel without telling her where she was going. She and toddler boarded a lifeboat and were rescued. However, Trevor’s parents were unaware, so they spent the rest of their time searching for their son inside the ship, reducing their chances of escaping from the sinking Titanic ship through the lifeboat. As a result, both of them died in the sinking.
3- Assumptions and distractions may end up costing one’s life: A couple hours before the collision, radio operator Jack Phillips got a message coming from a nearby ship about the existence of icebergs nearby. However, at that time, Phillips was processing a message with the Titanic passengers and also communicating with the lighthouse at Cape Race in Newfoundland. Phillips was dissatisfied with the message he found inconvenient, believing it wasn’t important, and replied moody. That ended up resulting in Phillips not receiving the warning of the iceberg that the other ship sailing nearby intended to send. Likewise, the Phillips case highlights another threat to project management the threat of distraction. Certainly now, looking back at the incident, one can easily find mistakes in the actions of Titanic officers and crew. However, we also must keep in mind that been aware of the risks of navigating Iceberg Avenue, so radiographers should rather be turned on communicating with other vessels rather than relying on passenger information.

Logistics:
Please write your paper using a 12 point font and double space. Papers should be approximately 2-3 pages in length.
Aim to use your own words; however, when you quote or paraphrase, remember to briefly mention the article you are referring. No separate works cited page is needed here unless you use other sources than what is provided.
Also, please be sure to proof read your work for spelling or grammatical errors.
