STEP 1. Using the knowledge of rocks and minerals that you’ve gained this week from reading chapter 3 of your textbook, and possibly other sources such as the internet, friends or your aunt the geologist, identify at least 1 rock or 1 mineral that you find around your local area.
You can find them anywhere, on a hiking trail, in a museum, at the beach, local building stones, counter tops at Home Depot, Urban Outfitters (yes, they sell minerals there, they just might not know it), I’ve found quite a few at Home Goods, or in your kitchen cupboard.
STEP 2. Make a short video, 2 minutes maximum, that you post to the discussion forum in which you:
State the name of the rock or mineral you’ve identified and show us the samples you’re working with.
Briefly discuss the properties of the minerals (color, luster, crystal shape, etc.) and show us those properties on your samples
Give us an idea of what your particular minerals are used for. This is where you might need to do a bit of research.

Description
Review the course objectives, readings, lectures, and other course material to select an issue or concern common to older adults. This project will have two parts that will be combined into a comprehensive 6-8 page (not including title page or references page), APA style paper due on the last day of class.
Clearly describe an issue or concern that affects older adults. Incorporate facts and statistics from a minimum of four academic sources following APA guidelines. Explain the scope of the problem (i.e. prevalence, cause, impact). Why is it a concern for older adults?
Provide specific actions that you believe could be taken to address this issue or concern and increase the safety, functional ability, and/or quality of life of older adults.
Students are required to submit their idea for the final paper by week 5. To avoid duplication of subject matter, the instructor has the right to redirect students to another subject.

Final Project Guidelines

I. The Community and I
As the semester has gone on, we have attempted to gain an understanding of the shaping and
coming to be of a Chicana/o community in the United States. The papers that have been assigned
for the class have dealt with many aspects of Chicana/o cultural production, politics and historical
conditions that have influenced both the Chicana/o community as well as the area of Chicana/o
Studies. For the Final (Group) Project, titled “The Community and I,” students in the course will
have to develop a “Plan” – in the style of other “plans” we encountered throughout the semester,
like the “Plan Espiritual de Aztlán” or the “Plan de Santa Bárbara” – that will:

1. Identify and define their community
Students, as they are fully aware of, belong to a – or several – communities. Individually or in a
group of 2-3 classmates, you will identify and define your community. You should also be able to
name it (“San Diego Mesa College undergraduate student body”, “Mexican-American community of
San Diego County”, “Chicana/o Students Today,” “Latinx Youth”, etc.) and describe it (who is a
part of it? Who is not? etc.)

2. Identify and define one main problem said community faces
Once you have identified and defined your community, you should address one of the main
problems it faces (e.g. high incarceration numbers, structural racism, internal colonialism, expanding
Chicana/o Studies department on campus, access to higher education, etc.). This “problem” that
your particular community faces can range from the very abstract (internal colonialism) to very
concrete (expanding Chicana/o Studies Department on campus). It is up to you and your group to
decide which is the problem that you can better address in this project.

3. Write a 3 to 5 page “Plan” to address this problem
As we have seen with previous “Plans”, they sought to address the issues they thought were
affecting their community. As a group, draft your own plan to address the issue you have identified.
Given the flexible nature of this project and the eclectic potential of “plans” themselves, there is not
“one way” to draft a plan. All that is necessary, is that every individual or group turns in a 3 to 5
page “Plan” that incorporates the above points with the “solution to the problem”.

After reviewing all the material in Modules 1 to 3, select and review one of the two critical
essays and write a response outlining the ways in which the key points of the essay are displayed
in the in one of the three works of fiction covered in Modules 1 through 3. That is, choose to
write about Emily Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” or
Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” in light of the theories of either Gilbert and Gubar’s
“Infection in the Sentence” or Hélène Cixous’ “The Laugh of the Medusa.” The response paper
should be between 750 – 1250 words (three to five typed, double-spaced pages). The
bibliography and any footnotes/ endnotes are exempt from this word count.
Important: Your paper must include your own personal perspective and analysis
throughout. You are encouraged to use phrases such as, “I envision …,” “I interpret this passage
to mean …,” From my analysis, I conclude that …,” and so on

For the research paper, we are taking a theme or topic from a book and developing that into a research-based argument paper. The paper must quote from the book at least twice and must incorporate (quote from) 5-7 secondary sources to help provide background information and factual evidence to support the essay’s main assertion.
Main Goals for the Research Paper
Write a thesis statement that makes a claim about an idea or theme found in Orange Is the New Black
Support a thesis using textual evidence from primary and secondary sources and logical inferences about those sources
Demonstrate improved usage of MLA citation methods
Critically analyze the issue using your research about the topic, and explain this analysis to readers.
Create organized paragraphs that focus on one main point and divide your argument into manageable chunks for your readers.

A few things to remember:
Write for someone who is not in this class, and, therefore, not familiar with the texts.
Include at least two quotations from the book and quote from or paraphrase from at least five secondary sources (NO websites) to develop and support your argument.
Parenthetically cite all outside source evidence (whether directly quoted or paraphrased)
Talk about complexities of the book and the problem you are researching, and avoid oversimplifying them.
Use your critical voice to argue about a topic connected to the book.
Address the opposition and work on refuting opposing claims.
Use your critical voice to explain WHY you take the position.
Your paper must be between 2000-2500 words, typed using standard MLA formatting guidelines: double spaced, 12-pt. Times New Roman font, one-inch margins all the way around, complete header, page numbers. If you are not sure how to format an essay using MLA, please see handout. Please stay within the word count guidelines as 10% of your grade is based on this. If you must go over the maximum, make sure it is by no more than 20% (3000 words total) as this is where I stop reading. You may NOT write less than the minimum. The minimum is for the essay ONLY and does not include your headers, title, or Works Cited page.
You must include a works cited page that includes both your primary source (the book) and your secondary sources. Submissions without a valid works cited page will not be graded and will receive a 0.
