Hello class,
I believe that any of these methods for evangelism are great, as long as they are relaying the true Word of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ, it is good in my book. Different cultures may just take and understand things in a certain way, and understand them differently than another culture. People have come to accept God in their life in different ways, but there is no right or wrong way of accepting Christ into your life. I am personally drawn to the Narrative Evangelism method, because I like being able to go through the gospel like a story, not leaving out any part of it.
2. Kaleb,
Dr.Mullane and Class
I believe that taking Jesus as your Lord and savior is for and for most. Then loving your neighbor as yourself is the most important thing when it comes to the conversion process and communication elements of other cultures and how one interacts with different cultures. I believe we should try to follow the 10 commandments in our walk with God. However, loving ones neighbor with transcend past cultural norms and diversity. God isn’t looking for us to be religious but rather have a relationship with him. Because it’s a personal relationship everyone isn’t going to worship the same. I think there is valid points in all the examples. I don’t believe one is necessarily better but which one is more understood to the other culture. How and what they can understand in their walk with Christ. What one feels is a sin maybe what someone else sees as being religious. I believe no matter how they surve most believers wants forgiveness, prayer, deliverance, and a closeness to God. When you come across different cultures praying for knowledge, wisdom, and discernment is the way for me to try to convert someone to God or to pray to help with fellowship with others.
3. Whitney,
Hello Professor Mullane and class My outlook on the different methods from evangelist is that no one is better then the other. I understand people have different cultures and religious beliefs but we all serve god the same just not the same way. All evangelist help spread the word of god from generation to generation. People accept god in different ways but there is no right or wrong way when accepting Christ. Power evangelism comes together as one and pray to believe that god will heal and deliver a person’s soul from sin and evil spirits. They believe in praying until the power of the lord come down and begin to move in their heart, mind, body, and soul.
4. Richard,
I think that these methods are an effective way to help understand or communicate with another person’s culture. I see these methods as way to help identify one’s culture. Also, it could help spread the word of God around to the next generation of people. While, reading these methods there is one that I thought was the better than the rest. Narrative Evangelism is a good way to help spread the story and the word of God. This method is not only helping spread the word of God to the youth, but its attempting to help other people understand the story Christ through their won worldview. I do think that these methods might have some drawbacks or merits.
5. William,
Hello Class There are many ways to evangelize, the book mentions evangelistic methods in chapter 18 of the textbook first there is Power evangelism which focuses on spirits and praying over them to break their hold on the lives of man or cast out demons. Second is infiltration evangelism which is the idea that if we act like people of a certain religion we can win them over to christianity. Third is narrative evangelism which focuses more on using stories and parables to teach (Moreau et al., 2014). Power evangelism seems strange to many denominations but in other cultures can be a great way to evangelize. infiltration can be dangerous because it could be easy to conform to the other religions and lose sight of the truth, though with discernment and wisdom there is a possibility it could work. I think narrative evangelism would be the best way to evangelize because it is a good way to introduce people to biblical writings through stories.
Blessings
6. Annika,
After reading the various methods in the chapter, I would say that they all sound like good approaches to sharing the Gospel. Doing so in a way that makes it easier for other cultures to understand is especially important, as sometimes language barriers and things getting lost in translation can make things a bit more difficult to explain. For example, the Chinese word usually used to translate sin (“zui”), means violating the law. As a result, those who abide by the law may not consider themselves sinners.
7. Daniela Spaleta,
Hi Dr. Mullane and Class!
This chapter talks about challenges that the evangelical missionaries face when trying to convert people from other cultures to Christianity, including Muslim, Buddhists and Hindu cultures (Moreau, Campbell & Greener, 2014). Translating the Bible accurately into their languages requires knowledge of the culture and societal norms as well as the linguistic skills, because one word such as sin can have many meanings in another language (Moreau et al., 2014). Conversion to Christianity depends on how that particular culture perceives sin and repentance, but also how their newfound religion affects other members of their in-group (Moreau et al., 2014). In narrative evangelism missionaries use proverbs, biblical parables and stories through discipleship work in a way other cultures can relate to (Moreau et al., 2014). I like this method the best because it’s the most authentic to the original apostles and St. Paul. It’s honest and doesn’t intrude or attack other religious beliefs. Power evangelism is about confronting spirits and ancestral gods from other religions against Christian God and winning (Moreau et al., 2014). I don’t like this method because I’m apprehensive about the existence of other gods, so it seems really odd to me. Infiltration evangelism is about missionaries disguising themselves as belonging to other religion such as Muslims in order to convert them to Christianity (Moreau et al., 2014). This method is rooted in dishonesty, so I doubt that it could be well received. In fact, I think that it could stir some negative feelings toward Christians. Last method is evangelistic appeals, which are all about using societal norms and values of other cultures in intercultural evangelism to bring people closer to Jesus Christ (Moreau et al., 2014). I like this method because it’s inclusive. Appealing to values of different cultures when bringing up Christianity will illustrate it in a way they can understand and use it. I think it should be combined with narrative evangelism to effectively bridge the message of Bible with other cultures.
Sincerely,
Daniela Spaleta
