What weaknesses did you spot in the argument?

In your Wk 3 – Creating an Argument assignment, you’ll construct an absurd argument. An absurd argument isn’t meant to be particularly serious, and there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong side or answer. This week’s discussion question and dialogue with your classmates and faculty member will help you become familiar with what an absurd argument is and which topics work well for that argument.

Watch “Narrow Your Topic” in preparation for creating your absurd argument. There is also a transcript available for this video.

Read “DC versus Marvel“ from the University Library. This article is an example of an absurd argument.

Select 1 of the following absurd questions for this discussion. Locate an article or blog that discusses your question.
Is Marvel or DC the best franchise?
Is it better to work to live or live to work?
Is American football or soccer better?
Should pizza be classified as a sandwich or a pie?
Are movies or music better?
Is it more important to be wealthy or happy?
Provide your own creative debatable idea.

Due Thursday
Using the article or blog that corresponds to your selected absurd question, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Which article or blog did you select?
How would you quickly summarize the author’s argument?
What did you find compelling about the argument?
What weaknesses did you spot in the argument?
How might you write a more persuasive argument on this topic?

Include a reference list at the end of your post that credits the piece you read. Use a citation generator, such as the Reference & Citation Generator in the Center for Writing Excellence, to cite the article in your response. Format your in-text citations (e.g., Adams, 2016, p. 23) and reference list (i.e., list of resources at the end of the document) using APA format. Consult the References page on the APA Style website for assistance. Don’t worry about perfection. If you make a mistake, your faculty member can help, so please let your faculty member know if you have any questions.

Write about what in your backgrounds helps you think through and identify what is right and wrong, as well as what constitutes ethical professional behavior.

This paper profiles you with regard to ethical and professional practice. The paper should be approximately 6-10 pages in length (10 pages max) and follow the APA style guide (5ed). It will include four sections.
The attached rubric is designed to help you.
(1) Ethical Autobiography. Write about what in your backgrounds helps you think through and identify what is right and wrong, as well as what constitutes ethical professional behavior. Specify your current level of ethical commitment and ethical sensitivity.
(2) Ethical Decision-Making Style. Everyone has a unique style of ethical decision-making which reflects their early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues which has been influenced and shaped by parents, relatives, peers and valued adults in their lives, such as teachers and coaches. This section of your paper articulates your implicit style. Begin by sketching a family genogram chart and describing the various relationships and the ways in which key individuals, particularly your parents, have dealt with moral issues and decisions and how this has influenced your style.
(3) Professional/Ethical Hero. Describe the individual (typically a mental health or school professional but not necessarily) that has most impressed you and serves as a role model for you because of their professional/ethical presence, i.e., sensitivity, ethical commitment and ethical courage.
(4) Levels of Professional and Ethical Development. Identify your current developmental levels and indicate how it has and will likely impact your work as a counselor. Suggest ways in which you can facilitate further development.

This week we focus on writing for career-, profession-, and discipline-specific situations. As we launch into our discussion, reflect on the following:
What is your degree program, college path, or career aspiration in general?
How do professionals in this community talk to each other?

Search for an article related to your future career by:
Accessing the University Library and searching by subject
Using another tool of your choice

For assistance with this process, please view “How to Choose Sources For Your Paper” from the Wk 1 University Library resources.

As you review the article you select, consider not only what is written, but how it is written. Make observations about the writing style and prepare to share those details with the class.

What education or experience is expected of applicants?

For this assignment, you will identify an employment opportunity you are interested in. This might be a job you are currently considering or a job you hope to obtain in the future. You will create both a cover letter responding to your desired job opportunity and a reflection about the process you used to gather information about that job and the company.

This assignment shows how effectively you are able to construct a piece of writing appropriate for a career- or discipline-specific situation.

Review the Cover Letter Guide from PhoenixLink resource for appropriate cover letter formatting guidelines. This resource is located also in PhoenixLink’s Career Resources section.

Locate a job opportunity that interests you.

Research key information about your chosen job opportunity and the company (e.g., mission statement, hiring manager, past accomplishments, etc.). You may find this information by visiting the company’s website and searching social networking sites (e.g., LinkedIn®) or job boards.

Before you write your cover letter, consider these questions:
What duties might this position require?
What education or experience is expected of applicants?
What is the company’s reputation, goal, or mission? How would hiring you help the company achieve that goal or mission?
What salary might you expect? Is it comparable to the same position within other companies?
Is there a possibility to grow or advance within this organization?

Before you write your letter, consider these questions about your unique qualifications and work history:
What makes you an effective employee and person that others want to work with?
What qualities, habits, and career skills make you a good candidate for this position?
How might your cover letter reflect any of the following traits: curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, or metacognition (self-awareness)?

Write a minimum 350-word cover letter for your identified job opportunity that incorporates the suggestions, format, and tone from the Cover Letter Guide you reviewed at the beginning of this assignment.

When your cover letter is complete, use 1 of the following methods to create space at the end of your cover letter:
Insert a page break at the end of your cover letter.
Use the keyboard’s enter/return button to create several spaces at the end of your cover letter.

Write a reflection addressing the following questions in at least 1 sentence each:
What was your research process? What did you find and how did you find it?
How did you determine the credibility of your sources?
How did your research influence the cover letter?
When you looked at websites, job postings, and other resources related to this career field, what did you notice about how people in this profession communicate? Were any words, ideas, or phrases prominent?
To whom did you address your letter? Why did you select this person?
What are some examples from your letter that demonstrate a respectful and professional tone?

Submit your combined document containing your cover letter and reflection assignments.
