What are some of the potential positive and negative consequences of your decision?

Please read Apple vs. the FBI to establish the context for this ethical analysis assignment.

https://www.scu.edu/ethics/focus-areas/business-ethics/resources/apple-vs-fbi-case-study/

Imagine you are an employee within Apple tasked with offering a professional, thoughtful, and concise 1-2 page single-spaced memo (500 to 1000 words) that recommends a path forward on issues like this to the company’s leadership. In crafting your memo, you should answer the following questions and offer a coherent, logical, and ethically defensible recommendation. Like many business cases, there is not necessarily a clear or right answer. However, the company must determine how it will move forward.

1. Who are Apple’s stakeholders?

2. What duty does Apple owe its customers?

3. Based on answers to the first two questions, what broader social responsibility does Apple have in situations like this to comply with government requests?

4. What options are available to Apple?

5. What are the ethical justifications for each option?

6. Which option do you recommend?

7. What are some of the potential positive and negative consequences of your decision?

Creativity is encouraged. Audience focus (leadership of Apple) and professional writing are expected. Integrate course material and relevant credible external sources whenever possible. Cite information appropriately using either foot or endnotes.

What purpose or effect does this narrative strategy have on the readers’ experience of the story once we witness the process of colonialism in the final third of Things Fall Apart.

As discussed last week, Things Fall Apart is often considered a groundbreaking work of “post-colonial literature”, broadly defined as any literature from a formerly colonized people or culture that directly reflects the effects of colonialism. However, the first two-thirds of the novel are set in a pre-colonial Igbo society. What purpose or effect does this narrative strategy have on the readers’ experience of the story once we witness the process of colonialism in the final third of Things Fall Apart. Please be sure to cite specific examples from the text in your response.

What do you make of Gregor’s initial reaction to his transformation, and what might this tell us about his relationship with himself and society or his family?

Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis opens with Gregor Samsa waking up one morning to find himself “transformed right there in his bed into some sort of monstrous insect”, and we learn that this “was no dream.” Kafka goes on to write that:
Gregor’s gaze then shifted to the window, where the bleak weather–raindrops could be heard striking the metal sill–made him feel quite melancholy. “What if I went back to sleep for a little while, and forget about all this foolishness,”, he thought, but this proved utterly impossible, for it was his habit to sleep on his right side, and in his present state he was unable to assume this position. No matter how forcefully he thrust himself onto his side, he kept rolling back. Perhaps a hundred times he attempted it, closing his eyes so as not to have to see those struggling legs, and relented only when he began to feel a faint dull ache in his side, unlike anything he’d ever felt before. (p. 995-6)

What are some aspects that you have observed while reading Don Quixote that might stand out as unique and different from the other works we have read so far this semester?

Don Quixote by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes is written in a style that was brand new when it was first published during the Renaissance in 1605: the novel. In fact, the word “novel” comes from the Latin word “novellus”, meaning “new and original, or young and fresh.” One of the “new” things about the novel was that it was a long narrative written in prose, rather than poetry (the complete text of Don Quixote is around 500 pages—we are only reading selections from the longer text). Beyond that, though, there were a number of other features that made novels in general, and Don Quixote specifically, “original” and “fresh”.
