Students will submit two, 2-4page typewritten film critiques during the semester. Critique will be focused on two of the full-length feature film screened in class. Each critique will have particular requirements (see below) based both on the content of the film as well as class readings and discussion. *Film critique: Some things to pay attention to:
A film critique is somewhat different from a review. A critique is an analytical essay on a film, in which you state your opinion on the “aesthetic quality” of the film and then give your reasons for your opinion. Do not limit yourself to reacting to the film (“I loved it !”) and do not use generic terms like “incredible,” “wonderful,” “marvelous,” etc. Unlike a review, you assume that the reader has already seen the movie; you do not need to give an extensive plot summary; you do not need to hide plot information so as not to spoil the surprise of the viewer; and you do need to be consistently analytical and critical. You might focus in your review on whether the main elements of the film come together to make a coherent, meaningful and moving film. You should probably focus on the following:
1 Does the movie want to be more than entertainment (ambition)?
2 How strong is the script (and dialogue)?
3 Are the characters believable?
4 Are the actors appropriately cast?
5 What is the theme of the film? Is it obvious or only subtly evident? Do the plot, acting, and other elements in the film successfully impart the theme to the viewer?
6 Is the setting/locale appropriate and effective?
7 Is the cinematography effective? Does the film make certain use of color, texture, lighting, etc. to enhance the theme, mood, setting?
8 Is the sound track effective and appropriate? Is the music appropriate and functional, or is it inappropriate and obtrusive?
9 Are camera angles used effectively? Are they ever used for a particular effect?
10 Are there special effects (and/or special effects makeup) in the film? If so, are they essential to the plot? Are they handled skillfully? Do they serve a necessary function, or does the film sacrifice plot or characterization for the effects themselves?
11 Does the film make use of symbols or symbolism? What purpose do the symbols serve? Are they used effectively? How does the symbolism in the film contribute to or enhance the film’s overall theme?
Most importantly, how does the film-maker either accomplish or fall short of their objective.
It is very important to focus the attention of the reader to examples that support your point(s). Just like in a legal case, you must provide “evidence” from the film to support your position. Therefore, taking good notes is essential to writing a solid critique.

Your final project will be to develop a budget for an Interscholastic Program. The assignment will require a spreadsheet AND paper. The spreadsheet will include your full budget with all required items and must balance. Your paper will explain how you made each balance and why you spent money in each area and for each team you committed money to in the spreadsheet. It will also explain your fundraising ideas and explain how they will raise amount of money you expect to raise.
The attached excel spreadsheet is a fictional college spreadsheet listing areas you must commit finances too. Your budget is given below along with what amount you must raise as the Athletic Director of the Blue Mountain State Mountain Goats located in north Georgia and are acting members of the Southern States Athletic Conference and the NAIA. They have 10 sports and a budget of $1,748,207 of which $150,000 is raised by the department each year through fundraisers, concessions, and ticket sales. $20,000 comes from tickets and concessions. Some data is filled in such as participants, maximum scholarships, cost of attendance (COA), NAIA dues, SSAC dues, insurance for employees and student-athletes and others. In addition, most cells should be pre-formatted to carry the items from one spreadsheet to another and to total certain columns.
Participation numbers are completed in order to match the 57% female student body per Title IX requirements. You need to match scholarship amounts to this as closely as possible. Benefits and insurance are filled in and FICA and RET will populate when you enter the salary for coaches. Each coach’s salary is split between the athletics budget and E&G from the institution and is calculated already as you enter the salaries for each. Your final submission will include 2 spreadsheets, your initial proposal and one with a reduction of $80,000. You will have one paper with the submissions which will explain what you did in your initial budgets and where money was cut for the adjustments as well as how you will raise the $130,000 required.

II. WHAT IS A PRIMARY SOURCE EVALUATION?
Essentially, this is an essay in which you analyze and interpret a primary source. As you read a
primary source, you should ask yourself the following questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why?
Asking these questions about the document will enable you to make a judgment as to: a) what you
can know about the past based on the document; and b) whether the information provided in the
document is reliable.
III. FORMAT
❖ The primary source evaluation must be 1.5-2 pages long, double-spaced, written in a 12-
point font and with 1-inch margins top/bottom and left/right. Because this is a short paper,
any quotations should be short. No block quotes. Use footnotes to cite any quotations (direct
quotations as well as paraphrased quotes).
❖ This paper must be written in formal English.

Citation: Provide a proper citation using the Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition bibliography format
(see sample citation below).

Vital Statistics: Here you will need to briefly explain what the source is. That is, who created it, when
was it published, what format does it take, etc.( This source is a letter/diary/journal, etc.)

Summary: This section should be a synopsis of the source. You should briefly summarize the
document. That is, explain what the document describes and says. Do not become overly detailed so
that the main points become obscured. do not include the subheadings in your paper).

Analysis and Interpretation: This section is the most important one. In it, you need to analyze the
document with a critical eye, exploring hidden meanings or dominant themes or underlying values.
Consider some of the questions outline above. Finally, explore what the document reveals about the
period under consideration and the themes of World history it reveals. What interpretations can you
make? What conclusions can you draw? This task of interpretation is what historians do.
